[PC] Free - River Strike (was US$2.00) DRM-free @ itch.io

600

edit: Thanks to cmdwedge, Dreamcast and others for pointing out that this game is inspired by / a homage to the Atari 2600 game River Raid.

For me, the game's title, and the gameplay video, brought back childhood memories of playing Desert Strike and Seek and Destroy.

Interestingly, River Strike is also available on Google Play - that version does have ads / in-app purchases, but according to at least one Google Play review, the ads are not too intrusive (e.g. 'happy hour' ads, when watched, gives bonus rockets and gems in heli select screen)

Pick your favorite from Apache to Chinook, 8 legendary helis awaits you to choose from! Automatic cannon targeting and intelligent rockets helps you to accomplish all 24 action packed missions!

For succesful mission you can earn 3 stars:

  • 1st Star: defeat more than 80% of enemies
  • 2nd Star: complete mission in time
  • 3rd Star: complete mission with one life

Some missions require specified ammount of stars to unlock them!

Special enemies, like big red Chinook helicopter, or huge container cargo ships needs to hit by rockets to destroy them, just like the bridges.

When destroying the bridges, try to hit the traffic on them for extra rockets and gems!

Collect rewards like golds and gems to get new heli types and upgrade their firepower, rocket damage, fuel tank and speed! Together with your maneuver skills, you will need a well tuned heli to defeat stronger enemies through higher missions.

You can trade collected goods for rockets or golds, or buy them in "Trade" section.

Are you ready for the true gamer challenge?

Sorry, are we just ignoring the amazing River Raid on Atari 2600? Because that’s what this is clearly based on.

My childhood hours were mostly spent collectin more points on River raid.

    • Ahh first comment. Exactly what I was thinking. River Raid. Though I played it on the MSX.

    • Fair point you made about River Raid - I just looked up a YouTube video of River Raid on Atari 2600 to confirm. When I read the River Strike's game description, the developer never made it specifically clear that the game was inspired by or it was a homage to River Raid.

For me as a kid, when I started out on video games in the 90s, I was one of those who never got exposed to Atari 2600 games, such as River Raid. So the title 'River Strike', triggered my childhood memories of Desert Strike and Seek and Destroy (instead of, River Raid) :-)

    • This was my first introduction to game addiction. Woke up at 2:30am to go to the toilet and Dad was still playing River Raid.

  • No reviews of the app yet, it is very new. Looks good though I may check it out, thanks OP.

Had a go of the app… be prepared to be blocked at the first level and need more 'gems/diamonds/coins/whatever' to make any progress. It's one of those.

  • I'm a sucker for shump but this is one of those stupid dev idiotic idea to put in stupid/annoying screen shake gimmick, does anyone know if there's an option to turn off that shit?

    • +1

I find it hard trying to shake my PC screen.

  • Avast detected the download as containing malware.
Likely a false positive; can anyone give advice?

    • +1

The developer provided two files for download, a self-extracting EXE file, and a ZIP archive.

Did you download the self-extracting EXE file? If so, that might be what's triggering your Avast antivirus to flagging it as a (most likely) false positive.

I'd suggest downloading the ZIP archive, then decompress its contents to a folder of your choice, and run the game executable from there.
