How come ONA's price never has a discount and free shipping and a third-party dealer manages to give us a 10% discount and free shipping. I would assume ONA give him at least 30-40% discount instead of trying to pass any savings onto us the end clients….

    • +1

Good question, there approach seems to be offering free shipping to those in lockdown as a form of discount. Also, for the record that's not how much discount they offer me.

      • well anyways, I just placed an order for 1kg of the Gateway…

        • Appreciate your order :)

IIRC Raspberry Candy was $68/kg before the rebranding. After the ONA10 discount + free shipping on 2kg it's still $135 = $67.50

Thanks DC for securing a deal on what has become a locked venture in terms of pricing. The only way I've seen it go cheaper is when Ona Melbourne had to scale down during lockdown and they were clearing bags from the store (which were NOT in my 5km radius).

    • +4

I paid $68/KG + $10 shipping ordering direct from them on Jan 1 this year. Now its $80/KG but OMG FREE SHIPPING… i.e. They've literally just upped their price and incorporated the shipping cost into it.

I really like the guys at Ona and have bought their coffee for years, pretty much had a reserved car park at their fyshwick cafe but after seeing all the coffee bean deals here, $80 is too much to pay for 1KG of coffee.

      • Just checked, it was in March 2021 that I purchased RC at $68/kg from Ona Melbourne (Brunswick)

    • Pretty sure I paid $80 for Candy at ONA Marrickville a couple of months ago.

Not a big fan of the re-branding but it's still my favorite coffee!

      • raspberry and white choc sounds more like an ice cream, does it make a good coffee flavour?

        • +2

If you’ve never tried it go to an Ona Store and have it made perfectly first. It’s my wife’s favourite coffee blend of all time. It’s simply magical.

    • They keep increasing their prices…And by a lot. A couple of years ago hitman was 40$ for 1kg…

  • How do I get free shipping into NSW for ONA? On checkout, I am stilll seeing a $6.99 shipping charge.

    • +1

Hmm that's weird, are you able to give it a refresh or a go in an incognito window?

    • +3

Sorry I made a goof on shipping settings. It should work now.

      • Thanks works now and ordered!

  • +4

quick post to say massive thank you for considering feedback about delivery days — your engagement and commitment to customers is why we continue to repeat purchase. I've still got a kilo of 3056 left, I'll be ordering next week. thanks again, Tim - you're a legend.

    • Appreciate it :)

  • how long is this deal for? want to get through my current coffee beans first before i order

  • Any suggestions on a smaller size bag to try for an Iced Long Black? (I'm generally a big cold brew fan but have been super lazy making it)

    • Aspen is good, more chocolatey

  • +1

I’m new on coffee beans but just wonder why this one is so expensive?

    • +3

You're paying for quality of beans and their roasting expertise and know-how. ONA is top tier imho. Very high quality and consistently delicious.

I was buying their single origins for a while there when I was working near Circular Quay in Sydney; for $16-20 (depending on farm) for 200g, which included an espresso coffee. A phenomenal deal.

Comes highly recommended and definitely worth a try. Also helps that DC is a great service. I recommend DC to everyone I know who is interested in good quality coffee.

      • +1

Thanks for the explanation. Ordered one to try.

    • +1

If you look at the constituent beans in the ONA Coffee blends they are all Project Origin coffees, which is a sister company to Ona. They have a say in the whole process, from farm to cup, and part of that is paying forward to partnering coffee farmers to produce quality coffee (and the infrastructure and wages that come with it). Traceability and repeatability is the goal, but there's also a boat-load of marketing involved (Indigo, Amber, Jasper etc).

The last time I was at ONA Marrickville, I was lucky to meet not only Sasha but also the fresh champ Hugh Kelly brewing and tasting his Coffea eugenioides. I was offered to try one and it was something else. Up to this day, I'm still trying to find something remotely close to it to no avail. Perhaps OP can point me to a publicly available eugenioides listing?

  • +5

I'm a big fan of ONA but I really wish they'd do 250g or 300g bags. 200g bags are like the equivalent of four packs of beer.

    • well said

  • Bloody good coffee this. I recommend the maple

  • The penalty for not being in lockdown in SA means the 10% saving is more than wiped out by the shipping cost - I can buy it cheaper from a local stockist! Oh well - it's more than worth it to be able to enjoy a leisurely brunch at said stockist :-)

  • Op,
can you do delayed orders for ONA with this deal?
I want to try, but still needs to clear out the other beans that I currently still have

    • Sorry we can't :(

      • when does the deal end then?

        • +1

We're planning to keep it going until Wednesday, but it might be extended. Can't guarantee though.

      • so if i order tomorrow, when will the coffee be shipped?

        • Within 2-3 days

  • Any recommendations for a Flat White? Something like a Campos Superior Blend.
Might get 2 or 3 different ones to try out

    • +1

Maple and Aspen for sure, but I think you'd also enjoy Gateway.

      • +1

Was about to order but noticed you increased the minimum spend again (currently $40 after discount). Was going to order all 3 to try them out but it's just under.
        Maybe another time :(

        • -2

Sorry about that! If you pop through your email I'll sort this out for you.

          • @directcoffee: oh what, why do the terms keep changing?

i only want to buy a couple bags, can you send me the original deal please: alamodey at gmail dotcom

  • How are you supposed to interpret 'freeze date' for ONA? Is it saying that's the ideal time to freeze them?

    • Spot on - that's what they mean by freeze date.

      • Interesting, I'd assumed that so long as it's been a couple of days since roasting to allow them to de-gas sufficiently, they would be ok to chuck into the freezer.

So like a few others here, I've got enough beans - I could order some and just leave in the cupboard, then around the 20 day mark from roast I should move them to the freezer if I don't think I'll finish them in the ~10 day window they recommend?

    • +2

This is freezing single doses, not bags.
If you’re vacuum sealing 20.5g for single dose grinding (with a Niche Zero, Mallokoenig ek43, Fellow Ode, hand grinder etc) then freeze 21-23 post-roast. The beans will be at optimal age when they are ground frozen and brewed.

If you’re running 250g batches in a grinder hopper freeze the beans ASAP, and let age in the hopper when you pull them out. Don’t freeze the original batch at 21 days post roast as by the time you get through 250g it could be many more days past optimal.

      • +1

Thanks for the explanation @yojabbajabba that makes sense! I currently freeze my unopened 250g bag (after placing it in an additional ziplock bag) when I get it and know I'm not going to use it in the next week or so. Once I open it, I transfer to an airtight container, and single dose, grind on-demand. So guess I'll stick with that approach - until I get a vacuum sealer or bean cellars from Weber :)

  • Can anyone recommend another of the coffees available that has a similar taste profile to Ona's The Founder (my usual choice)?

  • Used to love a regular cup of Black Betty but yeah, too pricey these days.
It's been interesting trying out the various ~$25 deals that come up from time to time.

    Seriously can't you round up the 4 x AXIL to $40 I mean seriously….

    Hey Tim,

Just wondering if you guys are noticing delays with AusPost?

Not you fault but running low on beans and i might end up caffeine-less in the next day or 2 :(.

    • We are sadly :(

  • Struggling to finish off a 1kg bag in the freezer but I bought two more filter roast 250g bags to get through lockdown. Thanks! :-)

    • Thanks Tim!

  • Sorry folks, the problem with the discount code has now been fixed :)

  • Just received the 1kg ona maple today disappointing it was roasted on 5 August.. over 2 weeks old already

    • Sorry to hear that! Can you send me the order number so I can chase this up.

      • Hi,

any update? This is my first time purchasing from you and if this is the norm then this will be my last purchase because there are a lot of other places where I can buy fresher beans at cheaper prices. What's the point of having a dispatch schedule when you're going to send out old beans anyways?!

        • My apologies, I think something's fallen through the cracks here. I'll respond to you ASAP via email.

    • Similar situation here. Roasted on 13th August, ordered on 17th, sent on 19th, received on 26th. Almost two weeks old by then. Not exactly the premium experience I would expect for such a premium (and generally quite expensive) brand.

It seems it was sent directly from the roaster on this ocassion, so not blaming the Direct Coffee.

Also not blaming the roaster for auspost transit time, especially since now due to covid things can take longer. All I am saying is roast it closer to the shipping date, since that is under their control.

It might seem like nitpicking but when you order a kilo, there is a greater likelihood of coffee going stale by the time you reach the end of the bag, so roasting as close to shipping date (within a day or two) would be expected. Other brands seem to manage it (unless they are lying on their roast date).

      • Sorry about this, there was a miscommunication between the sales team and the dispatch team. Wholesale orders (our account) is roast to order, while their usual retail orders are aged.

It appears that you got one of the retail orders. I would suggest freezing it in individual doses around now as this is the age at which they suggest it to be at its optimal flavour.

However, I acknowledge this isn't what you were expecting. So if it's tasting a bit average by the end please let us know and we'll make sure we look after you.

        Apologies again about this.

        Cheers,
        Tim

        • Not a problem, I was just passing feedback. Good to know that this is not the norm but a one-off mix up.

      • I ordered on the 17th August, dispatched on 19th and received on the 20th.. with roast date of 5 August. Already 2 weeks old at time of dispatch.

        • Hey there,

Yep, unfortunately your order was part of the batch that ONA treated as a 'retail' order where they age the coffee before sending.

Apologies again as this isn't what you were expecting.

I trust you've received my email where I've laid out a solution?

Please let me know if you didn't get this.

          Cheers,
          Tim

  • Received my ona coffee order (250g bags) but they don't have any roast dates on them that i can see. Anybody else have the same?

    EDIT:
I'm blind. It's embossed up the top!
