Nice - how are you finding these deals? Email list? I don't see any promo on their social media

    • +3

I just got an email from them and thought it was good enough to post on here.

      • Thanks. Have you ever tried this blend?

        • +2

I've had it at the local cafe quite a few times, but haven't used at home for a few years - but used to really like it in the past - I'm assuming it is same/similar now.
I've ordered 2kg for myself. I usually roast my own, but at these prices, it hard to beat doing it myself, by the time I factor in green bean cost, time spent and general messing around…

          • @drmac:

            I usually roast my own

Curious to know your methods and sourcing of beans?

            • +13

@bemybubble: I use a Behmor AB Plus roaster and usually get the beans delivered from CoffeeSnobs in Geelong, Vic. Definitely potential for much nicer roasts than some of the mainstream roasters - or terrible if I get the roasting wrong - but that's half the fun.
              I can roast 400g lots (green) = 320g roasted.

My roasting cost works out to be:
              - Green bean cost for decent beans: ~$15/kg (you can spend less or a whole lot more)
              - Factor in 20-30% weight/moisture loss when roasting brings that to around $20/kg
              - Factor in electricity (I estimate around 1.5kwh per kg = ~$0.55), delivery (works out well if buying 10kg or more) and machine cost/depreciation etc..

With small economies of scale, I can usually do a KG for about $23 without factoring in my time spent. I could do it a bit less if I was buying more in bulk, but not much really until you're buying a whole lot more (eg. retail/commercial roaster level) - and then equipment needed to roast this volume gets very expensive.

                @drmac: Thanks for sharing!

              • @drmac: One last question - how long does a 'roast' take?

                • +1

@bemybubble: Usually between 10-19 mins depending on weight and roast profile.

          • @drmac: Just curious, you have to buy green beans in bulk right? Won't you get sick of the beans?

I've had really good tasting beans that were basically blueberry bombs, 500g later I'd get tired of them.

  • Ive never had this, but, I decided to ape in as my 1kg Campos is nearly out. Thanks OP hopefully this is good!

I saw the picture and thought protein power or dog food

    • +1

Not a lot of protein in coffee, but definitely some power :)

  • awesome deal, ordered. thanks OP!

  • Does it expire tonight or tomorrow? Midnight Friday 20th August (is that tonight when it hits 12am?)

  • Need some new coffee, normally get st Ali wide awake blend, any one know how this compares? TIA

  • How long can these sit on the shelf sealed? Wondering if I should buy 12 months supply at this price :)

    • Wouldn't be very fresh anymore. That said, you can freeze them by putting them within another air-tight bag and taking them out just before using them. Many roasters even share ideal freezing time frames

      • Thanks. I'll just stick with the 2kg for now.

    • Lolll no point of buying fresh.

      • Ok - I didnt know how long they stayed "fresh" in the vacuum sealed bag

        • Try to consume it up to 4 weeks from roast date. Really depends how you are brewing your coffee as well.

    • Freeze the whole bag, use 250g at a time in your grinder.

Their delivery is very slow. About 10 days to nsw.

    • Took 2 days on my last order. To ACT

      • The customer service is good but, after the first complaint, they send another batch on express post. But it's still take 6 days to arrive. The roast date on packaging.

The first one was with Sendle, 10 days.

  • Wondering if one could get away with using this for filter coffee or is it too dark roasted?

    • Nope, it's an espresso roast. You could do French press/aeropress.

      • How about siphon

        • You could. Espresso blends are more developed in their roasting and benefit from a) finer grind sizes to maximise extraction, and b) active brew methods (under pressure) to bring out the bold balance of flavours. I've done espresso roasts using a syphon, but honestly you'd do better by throwing it in an Aeropress at a 1:3 ratio and making a long black.

  • Done….bought….Wooohoooo

I Went with Cue given its a trusted OzB supplier- and keen to try that single origin

By the time this is delivered to WA, it will be stale.

  • Bought the last deal and was thoroughly disappointed. I don't think I'll be buying any more from this roaster. That said this is different beans, YMMV.

  • Ordered from their last deal. Was one of the better coffee beans I've had. Would order more if I wasn't drinking the last order.

    • I'm in the same boat.

You can always freeze them, but I'm only just about to hit my second bag from the last order and I'm getting the feeling there will be more of these deals (yay)

  • my order from 1/08/21 arrived yesterday on the 19/08.
horrible beans old stale beans, anyway give them the benefit of doubt jumping on this deal, hopefully its get send out in a timely manner and change my mind.

    • Wow that's pretty late. Mine arrived after a week, also ordered on 1 Aug.

    • roast date on the batch that arrived on the 19th?
I found the Organic blend to be underwhelming also, but the roast date was right-on 2/8 and I followed Sensory Lab's brew recipe (had to ask them on Instagram for it, as I wasn't able to find it anywhere).

roast date was on 5th of August, but the beans seem old tbh, not much crema and tasteless.

        • The lack of crema is something I noticed too.

  • Anyone has had their order shipped?
Mine is still stuck on "it's being prepared…" via Auspost

    • Yep got shipping info next day but still no progress since

    • Similar for me. Showing on the shippit site as booked for delivery (Aug 20th). Just emailed Sensory Lab to see what is happening.

      • got a reply apologising for the delay, then shippit updated to package being on its way. Roast date will be interesting, hopefully our deliveries haven't been waiting around for almost a week to be picked up.

    • got an updated from aus post * received and processing* this is for my 2nd order on the 19th of August.

  • Yes , very slow shipping on mine too. If this is usual I can't recommend them.

  • I received mine in Brisbane today

  • Received mine in Canberra today. Roast date of Aug 19th. Not the best outcome, not the worst. Not sure I'll purchase from them again.

I see they’re at it again - they know I’m into my second bag and looking for my next fix!
