It's a good price as RRP was $349
but given its a 3 years old product probably maybe worth waiting for the next gen?

    • the max came out just over 2 years ago right?

      • yes, just checked its 2 years old
mixed up with the home hub gen1 which is 3 years old

but I do believe next gen of home hub max will be coming soon

        • The likelihood of a gen 2 being released in the next 12 months is slim. There aren't even any legitimate rumours going around about a gen 2 as of yet.

This is great discount for the max and probably one of the lowest after the $199 price error.

Tempting for the kitchen, don't really need one but would save unlocking the phone.
Got a nest mini in the bedroom which can pick up your voice most of the time.

Expected the screen to come off so can use like an ipad, but they are fixed. Still handy no doubt.

      Sorry… I'll whisper next time.

Was looking at one of these to pair up with the Google Nest Doorbell.

    • +2

by the way, if you pre-order the doorbell battery with JB hifi you get a free google nest 2nd gen

      • +3

Same offer is also available in google store for anyone interested
        https://store.google.com/au/product/front_door_package?hl=en…

        • I ordered the doorbell and they shipped the google next the next day. JBHIFI mention in fine print that they will send you a code to redeem after day of release.

          • @rsop: yeah, still haven't received coupon from jb, ordered through them as I have 5% discount.

      • The doorbell is $329 after discount? Is there any subscription fee for the recording like ring does ?

These are good to keep in touch with elderly who are not that comfortable with video calling. Good gift to give grandparents especially during lockdown!

    • +1

what video calling program can u use?

      • +1

Google Duo is the main video calling program to use. The Nesthub Max can also support Google Meet calls and Zoom calls.

        • Can you use Zoom in the smaller nest hub?

          • @johnyBgood: wouldn't mind knowing this either but given there's no camera on the smaller hub gen 2 I'm not sure you'd bother?
Decided I can use the phone or PC/webcam if i want that, prob wouldn't stand in the ktchen anyway

  • Does anyone know if the Google hub 2nd gen is almost as good, or is it just the screen size and smaller speaker etc?

    • +1

This one has a camera so if you want to do video calls. I love my 1st gen hub especially for photos, weather and the time in the kitchen plus playing music while I cook. Going the bigger screen and better speakers to enhance those two expereinces, plus by adding the camera do video-calls using duo.

      • Thanks, those would be worthwhile upgrades, just thinking for $84-99 or something the 2ng Gen hub would be good in the kitchen as you have mentioned. Camera and bigger screen probably better. Just hard to justify too much in an apartment (tv with google tv, chromecast audio and monitors etc, pc/webcam and phone). Just wondering if they are useful with the browser like an ipad etc? Would be handy non the less.

Since it's a fixed device you'd have to do calls from the one spot, or can u unplug it and walk around etc.

        • From my understanding its not design to work like a Tablet
you cannot install apps from playstore
and the touch responses is quite laggy compare to tablet
It doesn't have internet browser either

So in summary this is more of a "smart display" or "digital photo frame" for most people I believe

          • @littlesoldier: ok thanks- my mate has a couple in different rooms that are good for monitoring cameras etc as well.
I know some streaming services aren't yet supported natively (I use Tidal, but also got Youtube Music), but this could always change.

Just wondering where it would pull recipes from for example, imagine the most popular search results (similar to if you google'd something).

It sounds like the nest hub gen 2 may be good enough for the current deal (Afterpay $84) just to get another microphone in the kitchen to control devices, and for basic youtube use etc.

          • @littlesoldier: There's rumours/evidence that app install is coming. Really needs it.

      • You can also use Zoom on the Nest Hub Max.

    • +1

      Main difference:
      - Larger screen (Home hub 2 is 7" while this is 10")
      - Camera inbuilt (Home hub 2 doesn't have camera, so it can only do audio call when using Google Duo)

  • Just so everyone knows, they are also having a sale on the gen2 with the smaller screen for only https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/144003076352?epid=23045686138&ha….

This one suits me a little better because it means i can get two for the same price as a max, one for the bedside and one for the kitchen.

    • +1

Same price at JB, Bing Lee and HN (although I'd be giving my money to anyone but HN after they kept millions of taxpayer dollars).

    • +1

Good idea, just went with the hub gen 2, only $84 with the afterpay ebay plus deal.
no doubt the max is better but similar to you just think the basic features will be handy for either the bedroom/kitchen, and nest mini in the other room. Given the limitations above (ie not really a tablet) it's good enough i think!

      • Exactly. Unless you are doing things like video calls or need it as a main music source then the max isn't quite as worth it.

        • +1

Yeah I think so, the max speaker is meant to be a fair bit better but I've got enough other sources and speakers in the apartment..

Just calling a mate on Duo on the PC, have never used it but may start to do so works well with the webcam and chrome etc.

Didn't seem to have an option for Chalk but either looks pretty good

  • +1

this also can be used as nest cam.

  • +1

Nice improvement over the smaller nest hub we've owned for sometime.

Owned ours now for a couple months and happy with the purchase.

Ive since linked foxtel and can watch CNN or the BBC news whilst making brekky which is a decent alternative to the big screen in the adjacent room.

    • can do that on the smaller next gen 2 as well? eventually get both i guess one day
my big telly is visable from kitchen and everywhere anyway

      • +1

        Yes you can

        • cheers, either would be good, can always put this in the bedroom instead one day

          • @G-rig: The 10" makes it a more worthwhile experience and saves me turning on the big telly when I'm cooking. Faster to get the service I want streaming too as it's all done by a simple voice command.

            • @cristobaljames: That's true, i got a built-in Chromecast and Chromecast with Google TV and it's surprisingly hard to just ask to watch a free to air channel on the right input, or even stream 7+ live etc. Voice commands should be the same, but no apps as Such on the Nests according to the above comments, just a handy simple interface.

All this stuff annoying half the time, tv just turned off for no reason

  • I prefer the smaller nest hub because it doesn't have a camera, it's not that I think it's likely someone will access it, but the risk is high enough to not be worth the very minimal benefits.

Obviously I'm not going to de-Google my phone via ADB etc, but taking small precautions like using uBlock are akin to keeping your email password safe.

    • Surely it'd be more likely for the cameras on your phone to get hacked before the camera on a completely locked-down device that does not allow you to install any apps or even browse the web does?

      • +1

Just put a tape and problem solved.

      • It's more likely just Google bending what is acceptable behaviour.

It's also more an issue of humans managing access to people's private media:

Google could have the best intentions, but as long as their employees are human we should take some responsibility for our data security and privacy.

That and Companies including Google use contractors with our private data:

        • What about unknown numbers calling, you pick up and hear nothing or a recording, they could be just getting a recording of your voice.

Main thing to consider is where you're going to place it, the 10" is quite a bit bigger

        • It's more likely just Google bending what is acceptable behaviour.
Google ADMITS employees listen to conversations recorded by Google Assistant

To me, that was media sensationalism. I am aware that humans are used to train voice recognition systems, and that snippets of audio around the "hey google" wake word or phrases that I specifically ask it may get listened to for training purposes. Sensationalist headlines like that only serve to feed the fears of some people. It insinuates that these devices are always recording and transmiting your conversations, and less tech-savvy people may simply assume that is true.

It's also more an issue of humans managing access to people's private media:

What does that have to do with smart home devices?

That and Companies including Google use contractors with our private data:
Google said contractors are listening to customer audio recorded by the company's virtual assistant

That article is referring to the same thing as the sensationalist The Sun article above.

It is important to read past the headlines, especially sensationalist ones. News outlets rely on clicks to make money, so the more sensational they make a headline or article, the more people are likely to click it. Bonus points if they paint Google or Facebook in a bad light, as they have taken massive chunks of ad revenue from traditional news and media companies.

  • It's a bit like people paranoid about app permissions - if you don't allow some then it kills the functionality of the app.

On a side note, the nest video recording wouldn't be bad for security (recordsb and stores up to 5 days I think), but can do without another subscription for nest aware.

  • These things are cool.
