Nice deal find OP. Incidentally, I had posted about the 2021 remastered Quake 1 announcement earlier this morning on a separate thread comment,

    • Steam users and Bethesda.net users, who already own Quake and have Steam / Bethesda.net copies of Quake 1, will automatically receive the new enhanced version with a free download
    • Official trailer for Quake 2021

Here's the Release Notes copy pasted for easy reference:

    Anyone else able to checkout?

  • Is this not playable with a controller, or just keyboard and mouse? I think when I bought it on Steam last year, it wasn't, so refunded.

  • Bethesda had Q1-2-3 giveaway last year, you might already have them in your Bethesda account.

DarkPlaces is a Quake engine that hasn't been updated for years but appears to look quite a bit nicer than than the footage from the Quake 2021 official trailer. Nicer explosions, particle effects and textures (with the texture packs listed on the site, and alternatives here). Maybe nicer lighting too (with the rtlights packs).

If you run Linux you'll typically find it and other Quake forks in your repos.

DarkPlaces is just the engine. You still need to purchase the Quake game to get access to all the levels, otherwise the shareware first episode is free.

If you're on Windows and buy this deal, you can easily download DarkPlaces and the relevant packs and compare side-by-side with the official game. I'd love to know how it compares. I've played DarkPlaces a bit over the years and it's pretty awesome.

if you're a fan of DarkPlaces, if you haven't already done so, it might be worth giving this a shot:

      Quake Epsilon

Based on DarkPlaces, Quake Epsilon is a complete overhaul with high resolution textures, models and sounds. Incorporates minor mods and tweaks, but doesn't detract from the original. Can be used with the full version of Quake and its mission packs.

The ModDB listing shows a late December 2016 release build, and the developer seems fairly responsive on that ModDB listing's Comments section

      • Thanks! I didn't know about Epsilon. I'll give it a crack. There's a whole bunch of useful info and instructions on the Epsilon page too.

  • I'm confused with this remaster. Didn't the original recently receive ray tracing support from Nvidia? That's the version I've been playing on Steam and it looks amazing. But this remaster doesn't appear to support ray tracing?

    • +1

Quake 2 got a free RTX update, this just got QoL features and better Graphics

      • Ah right, thanks for clearing that up! A shame this remaster doesn't have any ray tracing though

  • Replayed quake with dark places. Was amazing. Loved it.

One of my favourite games. Basically no story, just run and gun.

When gameplay was the actual selling point for games.

Hi Ruff Specialist, as per the links that payton and myself have commented earlier, it might be good to slightly reword your OP so that it makes it clearer that its not just any old patch that anyone can download, it is exclusively ONLY for:

    • Steam users and Bethesda.net users, who already own Quake and have Steam / Bethesda.net copies of Quake 1, they should be eligible to automatically receive the new remastered Quake 2021 version - free of charge

Aside from those users and their pre-purchased and installed Steam / Bethesda.net copies of the original Quake 1 game, it appears everyone else has to fork out money and purchase Quake 2021 outright (e.g. Microsoft Store)

The Bethesda.net FAQ is a pretty good webpage to include in your OP as well I reckon

Good news - following yesterday's release of Quake Enhanced as a free and automatic upgrade for gamers who already own Steam or Bethesda.net versions of the original Quake game, gamers who have a GOG version of Quake can also look forward to getting Quake Enhanced as a free upgrade in the near future

GOG Community Discussions > Quake series > Quake Enhanced Update - post from GOG.com Team

As you may have noticed, Quake® Enhanced (updated and visually enhanced version of the original) is available on Steam since Aug 19th. We're in talks with the publisher and have their confirmation that the GOG version of the update is currently being finalised, and will be available on GOG.COM. We'll be sure to let you know when that happens.
GOG users who already own Quake will automatically receive the new enhanced version with a free download.

If you don't yet have a GOG copy of Quake 1, Quake: The Offering is currently on a 70% off sale at GOG
