External Optical Drive Enclosure 5.25inch for DVD/Blu-Ray Burner

I need a External Optical Drive Enclosure 5.25inch for DVD/Blu-Ray Burner, but they seem rare as hen's teeth. This is the cheapest I've found, its $45 delivered, with an EU plug, which is pretty absurd. I hit the jackpot years ago getting one from MSY for like $5 but it recently went to god

I've tried just a basic sata to usb 3.0 cable, not enough power, but if theres a similar solution thats all I need

I’ve also seen these - apparently they work for drives

  • It also says 100V-240VAC - so I assume a simple adapter from from bunnings would be safe?

You can get a decent 2.5 DC jack from a local store or amazon. You just need to make sure you have enough power supplied to the enclosure (I think 12V 3A should be good enough).

I have one of these and it has been great since I bought it - my current computer case doesn't support optical drives.

I have a vantec 5.25 enclosure thats ive had for almost 10 years, and its still going strong.

  • Under $20 for an external USB burner, if you don't need the specific device you already have.

    • bluray ?

      • Sorry, not bluray

    • Yeah I’ve got one of those, it appears to be pretty unreliable, wonder if it’s down to the enclosure, but yeah don’t want to be burning coasters

are you using a laptop ? year ago, I got a USB 2.0 enclosure + LG laptop bluray burner but it was not that stable, so ended up buying an internal LG 5.25" drive. Make sure to buy an enclosure with good power supply as 5.25" requires 12 V.

    See you are in NSW.
If you need the power adaptor, just grab one from Wagner on Parramatta rd in Ashfield.
Otherwise, just use a powered USB adaptor.
ebay should have something cheap enough.

  • I purchased this a while ago https://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/MR3UKIT/

If you buy it, you need to buy either a replacement cord or a US to AU adapter ( keep in mind voltage difference ) I just bought a new cord from somewhere else.

It is ridiculously hard to find an enclosure for 5.25 inch optical drives in Australia. That is the cheapest I found that looked decent, there were some cheap Chinese options that I didn't trust.

  • bit late to the party but was after a 5.25 optical drive enclosure myself - found this as an option
