Roadbikes, all the effort of a gym membership with none of the reward.

      Doing it wrong

I hav been using a MTB and am thinking of getring another as it is pretty well worn out. My commute is around 10 km each way.

I have never owned a road bike and always feel that they are more prone to flat tyres. I do enjoy riding down a few stairs occasionally.

    Any thoughts?

    • +2

Gravel bikes are the new hotness. Going down stairs is more of a function of bike control and a flatbar bike is easier to control than a dropbar bike. You don't need 2" wheels to go down stairs.

    • If you get 28mm tyres, you'll get a bit more wear out of them and they will stand up to a tad more abuse. Continental gatorskins or the Schwalbe marathon plus are pretty much the gold standard in preventing punctures. You still wont be able to ride down stairs though. Relative to a MTB, its still going to be a bit of a PITA. My wifes hybrid is only a few minutes slower when I ride it over my commute, an MTB would be a bit slower still I suppose.

I have an Aldi 29er MTB, I'll probably get a more comfortable seat soon. I use it for HIIT exercise mostly now.

Trek 3rd gen Domane SL with SRAM Force AXS and Winspace Hyper Wheels
    - replaced the 2nd gen Domane SLR Ultegra Di2 8070 with TWE carbon wheels that was stolen from my garage :(
Giant Seek 0 (2010) Shimano Alfine 8 speed commuter to get me to work when I wake up early
    - plans to replace this with a Chinese titanium frame Alfine 11 Di2/Gates Belt Drive bike are in place (because I like dropbars and given they're similar in price for to microshift brifters + TRP Hy/Rd brakes)

  • I have an old Mongoose mountain bike. It still rides well considering it has done a lot of km's and some off-roads.

But, during my last bike ride, I was overtaken by a girl casually pedaling up a steep hill. She had an electric, pedal-assist bike. So, now I am seriously considering buying one.

The local town bicycle of course. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Reid Urban X2, a hybrid bike.
Used to have a Kmart MTB, the difference when riding them back to back is like driving a Yaris vs driving a Golf GTI…

    • +1

That’s an insult to the Yaris. It’s probably like driving a 90s Kia or a Cherry J1 compared to the GTi.

      • haha!

  • +1

    Giant Anthem something (MTB)
    Giant Defy something (Road)

    Their low-middle level stuff.

  • I don't own a bike, but when I saw my colleagues Brompton foldable bike, I know I want one

  • Aldi road bike for the commute. It's surprisingly good for the fact i paid around $100 10 years ago for it.

Trek 7.1 that was left abandoned for months behind the skip at work. The rear wheel was missing but I managed to find a replacement whilst going through a walk through my neighbourhood and someone was chucking out their old bike in hard rubbish. It's great for casual rides and parking up outside the supermarket to get some groceries, as I didn't pay anything for it :)

Oh and my old BMX but I don't exactly feel like riding that very often!

  • I'm in the market for a bike under $300. Will only be used for fitness within my 5km radius. Any suggestions for a new rider?

    • +1

Second hand bike shop brand. Anything new for that price will be pretty ordinary. Definitely don’t buy a Kmart/BogW bike.

    • +1

Main priority is that it fits. You won't enjoy riding it of the frame is the wrong size. Look up the online calculators and see what your frame size would be.

You do have to fuss more with tyres if it's a road bike. Just pumping up a tyre with presta valves is a bit of a learning curve. Otherwise you can go with hybrid or MTB. I would avoid a bike with suspension forks unless you have a genuine need for it.

For that budget you are better off getting a 2nd hand bike. Try and stick to name brands. I try and buy old bikes from people in the posh suburbs as there's less chance of the bike being stolen.

Main things to look for in second hand bike - are the wheels true, any cracks in the frame, particularly under the bottom bracket and is the drive train in good order - very common to see teeth rounded off in the chainrings. Not a deal breaker but I try and haggle the price down a bit if that's the case.

    I have a road and a hard-tail bike. I ride whatever I feel like.

  • An Aldi rebadged Polygon Mountain Bike from about 3 years ago.
My son has a Polygon Cascade 3 which has been really solid also.
Polygons seem to be good value for money considering they utilise most of the usual brand name parts like Sun Tour shocks, Shimano gears and derailer etc. we are just casual weekend riders though so it depends on your budget and experience I would assume.

  • My daily commuter is a BMC Alpenchallenge Alivio with panniers and quick release Topeak trunk bag for my essentials. Swapped the Continentals for some Schwalbe Marathon Plus puncture resistant tyres, never have to worry about punctures since. Have not ridden as much as I like since COVID19 started, keen to jump back on when warm weather comes.
Riding for fitness and lower or zero city parking fees.

  • What? No option for "n+1"?

Liv Langma Advanced 2 (Carbon road bike)

plus our 6 year olds rides …

Surely you work for Giant with all that equipment?

      • LOL, no, but the newest two are due to connections via my brother who is one of their sponsored riders, but really just pure coincidence, still wanted those particular models regardless of price paid. Prior to that they've all been regular Joe Blow purchases. My eBike would have been a Giant as well however they didn't bring any XL versions into Australia in the model I wanted for some strange reason.

Cannondale CAAD 8 (2016). Commuting from South Brisbane into town each day, about 40ks round trip, no complaints thus far, it's a good no nonsense alloy bike. Cannondale probably as good as anyone at aluminium frames I reckon.

    • +1

That’s a nice frame, love that look. I still shed a year remembering the day I cracked the rear dropout on my CAAD9.

      Now I ride a black CAAD12 with Roval CL 50s and 11sp Ultegra Di2

      • +1

Thats a nice bike, def worth getting the ultegra components I think, I have the 105 groupset and it works fine enough, but the shifting is not totally smooth and with all the abuse the drivetrain gets, I dont know if it will last me much more than a year.

        • +1

As much as I loved my CAAD9 I could never get it shifting perfectly, esp when sprinting, I ran an ultegra/DA mechanical mix. Now I've gone Di2 I can never go back to mechanical. It just shifts so well and it has huge tolerances, very fuss free.

Originally I had Ultegra 10sp Di2 and I purchased all the parts one by one when I saw that they were on special.

Norco Fluid FS1 - quality aluminium full suspension MTB and I upgraded the wheelset to DT Swiss.

I find a set of light strong wheels is the best upgrade for most bikes, usually leave everything else is.

In the market for a quality aluminium road bike 105 level but prices still seem inflated. Again will probably upgrade the wheels.

Usually keep my bikes for at least 4-5 years and then upgrade to a high spec aluminium model. Aftermarket component prices are usually a joke so get it right the first time.

  • where's the fixie option?

    • Vintage / classic may be suits that

  • +1

Specialized Roubaix 2012, on its second groupset after north of 75,000 lifetime km. Great bike.

    Canyon Grand Canyon SLX

  • Just got a giant bike. Just need to find a way to make bov sounds.

  • Bianchi Impulso Allroad GRX 810 with a fizik big-bum seat and some continentals.

It's a pretty sweet ride…. appended to my Wahoo indoor trainer.

Someday I'll hit that gravel like I told the missus I would.

  • I'm really happy now that I have discovered that gravel bikes are the new coolness.

I am going to start calling my 25 year old road bike based touring bike a gravel bike now!

    Cannondale SuperSix Shimano 105 :)

  • Diamante Elan Elite. Bought it in 2013 in Berlin. Been many places with it. Still going strong.
