Will You Get Your Christmas Shopping in Early?

‘Zero chances of it arriving on time’: Retailers issue Christmas warning as ‘perfect storm’ ignites delays

Just read this and found it interesting.

Is this just another retailer telling us to buy now!!! Or there’s some merit in shopping early?

I start my Christmas shopping when the Boxing Day sales start and buy presents throughout the year.

I finished Christmas shopping a couple of months ago.

  • I'd buy what you can buy now providing it is what you want and the right price.
You can probably shop around online then Click and Collect (or Delivery) to minimize your time in-store.
I wouldn't expect shops if they order stock now will see guaranteed stock shipped to them, so they will sell what they have in-store and top-up from the Warehouse while they can.
Otherwise, you may see gaps on shelves again or even price increases.

I wish we could just do away with these scheduled gift days :(
(But still have the holiday, meet family / eat a meal together, etc. I'm talking specifically about the purchasing of products for each other)

I agree. There is no need to buy a present.

Is endless consumerism not a good reason?

Could not agree more! I love the opportunity for family/friends to get together, but could definitely go without the random stuff that more often than not ends up in landfill :(

Is it too hard to just say hey I don’t want a gift for X occasion and won’t get you one too?

        • I do this already, but I can't speak on behalf of other people! I would imagine it also gets more complicated when kids are involved.

Don't you love getting giftcards that tie you to a particular shop/brand? Then the guilt of not spending all of the credit and having to end up paying more to use all the credit?

"Why would I give you the $45 money instead of $45 dymocks giftcard?? I would look cheap"

  • Wait until Black Friday/ Cyber Monday sales.

  • Probably going last minute this year, except for the major gifts. Majority of family are interstate and who knows if I can see them or not. As the gifts are for kids you can't really post them as it's damn volume buys haha.

    It's legit.
But it's not just COVID delays at Shanghai Port. We've had capacity issues all year.

Shipping availability has been low all year to the point that shipping cost is at record highs and still going up.
Peak shipping season doesn't normally start until September, with October being the peak.
We're already above normal peak shipping volume and still got 2 months of increases (Christmas Stock builds) to come.

I’ve been buying Christmas presents all year for people

  • Big W toy sales help to get us started in the middle of the year.

I would be strongly advising everyone to try and purchase things like kids toys and electronics asap. I work for one of the largest retailers and we are already starting to see some major shipping challenges in the coming months from Europe and Asia. Its like a perfect store almost,
    Covid
Factory shutdowns and orders mounting up,
Harbours and shipping ports at beyond max capacity,
    The Suez canal incident
Major topical storms in several parts of Asia in the past few weeks

Legit article. We finished our Christmas shopping a month ago. A bit more detail into what is going on.

    https://stockhead.com.au/news/special-report-the-global-ship…

I’m managed to import enough inventory until early next year with some small top ups as needed via courier.

A 20’ container will be about $5k USD now IF you can get it on a ship in a reasonable time.

With the exception of my husband's gifts, Ive already finished my Christmas shopping. We have a spare wardrobe that we fill up with gifts throughout the year as we find good deals. It's extra full this year…I think I took the "online shopping therapy" a bit too far!

Edited to add: since all of our family is interstate, it's not a given that we'll even see them at Christmas, but at least we've got everything sorted if we do. :)
