Recommendation for Mobile Plan for a Teen

Hi,

Following recommendations I signed up my 14 yo to Moose Mobile on a prepaid month to month plan with 6GB inclusion. I had no idea that after the 6 GB he could still use mobile data so he ran a bill of about $100 in clocked up data GBs!

Is there a cheap plan were you can only add data if you want to? Basically I don't want him to be able to go over the monthly allowance.

$15-20 a month thanks.

How about Catch?

Many thanks
Coco

Belong $15/month 3GB. After you use up your data you get slowed down. Doesn't automatically add anything. If you want to you can buy 2GB for $10 through the app. But since you can gift data to anyone on belong you can buy it cheaper through ozbargain classifieds (from other members). Plus anything unused is banked indefinitely so you can use it in a future month.

Speed throttling is great idea. Wish ALDI did it.

      • Oh no. What do ALDI do? Just signed up my teenager for ALDI yesterday.

        • I think you shift to any PAYG credit. Then once nothing left there, data cuts off.

    • Sounds great but I can't see anything cheaper than $25 on the website?

You can go on the plan after your first payment, at least that would give him some extra data in his bank: https://www.belong.com.au/content/dam/belong/downloads/CIS-B…

Another benefit is there's no penalty for going up or down plans so if he needs a bit more data he could go on a high level for one month to get some extra data to then use over future months. Also you can get half price sims all the time - if you can be bothered you can get new sims, activate them, gift the data to yourself and cancel the new sims. Often there is bonus data in new sims as well.

  • Get on this plan for 6 months if they need the extra data: https://www.iinet.net.au/sim-only-plans

40GB @ $15 per month for the first 6 months. Then switch away after the 6 months to another deal.

Can get a yearly prepaid plan. They'll have to learn to ration the data. I've been eyeing woollies mobile for the 10% off at woollies once a month.

    • +2

Yep if they use it up within a year they have to recharge it with their own money

    • Ideally I would like him to ration on a montly basis. He will spent everything too quickly if I get a yearly plan.

Make him pay if he wants more data.

There is $20 for 12gb per month prepaid plan. Ends up being more expensive over the year but still get the 10% off offer.

        from T&C's

Data charged in 1KB blocks. Downloads stop when data limit is exceeded.

Learning not to spend everything as soon as you getting it and thinking long term is a vital life skill.
If he's not good at it then this might be a good learning experience for him.

Get him a 1 year prepaid and show him how to track usage and get warnings etc on his phone.
If he uses it all up he has to pay for extra out of his own pocket. That should teach him pretty quickly to stop doing that.

get them on a prepaid plan, with those the data gets cut off when they reach the allowance, so you have no chance of getting charged extra.

  • Felix mobile has a unlimited sim plan with unlimited data. $35 a month but the first month's free.
    See deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/deals/felixmobile.com.au

This works out to $385 per year, which is a lot to pay for mobile service (only recommended for people with absolutely no self control).

$300 Kogan Mobile plan will give you 550 gigabytes of data to use for the entire year, or $240 for 300GB for a year.

Going with Woolies mobile also gives you a useful perk, which is 10% off your grocery shop each month.

Most smartphones will also have the ability to artificially restrict data as well https://support.google.com/pixelphone/answer/2819524?hl=en

  • Circle.life's $28/100GB plan?

After reading any thread on here about circle.life you would circle right back and run for your life

  • I think Coles is the best deal, $12x for 120GB Data for 1 year. i.e. $10 a month. Even your kid use 20GB a month, it will last them 6 months (i.e. $20 a month). Coles even comes with Unlimited Long Distance calls, it will come in handy if your kid found someone overseas on match.com. (I am just kidding about the match.com part, but if you don't WANT long-distance call, you can choose Catch, a few bucks cheaper than Coles)

    • kid will use it in one month.

  • Ive got my son on the Telstra $59 for 80gb a month. Did it when JB hi-fi had a $500 gift card for signing up. Sold the gift card for $450. Makes it $21.50 a month, for 80gb a month, and only throttled after that, with great network coverage.

Got My Kids, mum and grandma on belong. I ported to it also on a higher plan to gift data on a need basis

Too bad the $10 plan is gone for any new user
