Some people said the best vaccine for COVID is to get drunk! It apparently works well against all type of variants. UR a BaKa!!!

Member Offer: $144.95 per bottle, RRP $214.99 per bottle

    • +2

That RRP is ridiculous. The suggested retail price in Japan is 5000 yen (plus tax). Including tax, that's about $70. Unfortunately the global demand causes these ridiculous prices.

      • +1

What? Even at 5000yen converted once you add spirit excise the price is about $100+ landed in Australia. This is affordable if you consider that the grey markets in Japan are about 10,000yen.

        • +5

I’m just pointing out the massive price difference. Suntory price it around the equivalent of $70. If you have to pay $145, there are arguably much better whiskeys you could be buying.

But if you get the opportunity to buy at the actual retail price set by Suntory, it’s an excellent whiskey for that price.

          • +3

@mister_snrub: You can’t even buy this in Japan for $70 anymore. Japanese know this is now in demand and have increased the price
            To reflect that.

            • @swxfty: Not in Tokyo. But outside Tokyo you can find it at suburban liquor stores at the retail price. Same with other Suntory whiskeys like the standard Yamazaki and Hakushu. The Yamazaki 18 year old and Hakushu 18 year old are much harder to find, though.

          • +1

@mister_snrub: I get what you're saying, but this is pretty much Australian fair price from Japanese retail because of the yen conversion plus taxes.

      • Plus shipping plus freight, plus any import duties/taxes. $144.95 is pretty spot on then, with a tiny margin.

It's $110 from this store but delivery takes it to $155 - https://www.masterofmalt.com/whiskies/hibiki/hibiki-japanese…

        • +1

I am sure you would have to pay the duty on top of that as well, once it crosses the border.

          • @tm001: they normally lie about them being gifts or what the contents is and hope it isn't picked up, if it does, it will have a lower declared value

      • Can probably but it at family mart too

  • +2

My mate and I cracked open the Hibiki 17 and thought it was over rated.
Still got 2 bottles with the seal on.

    • +1

Hibiki is over-rated; there are much, much better Japanese whiskies out there. For reference I've had the 12, 17 and 21 and the thing I like most about them was the bottle

      • -7

I'd take the Proper No. Twelve over any of the Hibiki's.
I've tried the harmony, 12 and 17 but it didn't do anything for me.

    • happy to buy one if you want to PM me.

        • +14

          Then maybe stop complaining.

    • +2

Hold on to it for a few more years and sell it for a nice profit.

I agree with you, nothing special for the price. Decent when it was not worth a whole lot, but the not for the current price.

      • don't you need a license to sell alcohol? there are bottles ive got as gifts that id like to get rid of too but was under the impression that you cannot sell alcohol in marketplaces

        • +3

You must be fun at parties.

          • +1

@dust: Enlighten us on how to sell it without a permit then? Gumtree and eBay will simply end your listing. And I would be hesitant to suggest that many people on FB marketplace are after Hibiki 17. Happy to stand corrected though

            • @JutakuHome: OzBargain classifieds? And I was going to suggest FB marketplace.

        • Yes, you need a liquor licence to use ebay or an auction house.

          • @Plimsol: I saw a Hibiki 17 special sell for $10k in an auction house a few months back. Seemed like a private individual, not a business, I doubt they'd have a licence.

They take a margin, but this is the legal route.

          • @zeomega: Yeah it's because they're an auction house. That's what I thought.

        • try here
          https://www.auswhiskyauctioneer.com.au/shop/

or just google whisky auctions australia

          • @wikiwiki: Sweet, thanks for clarifying. I’ve got an unopened 50ml bottle of Johnnie Walker Red I might put to auction to see what it can fetch. Open to offers as well

      • +1

I didn't rate it when it was a regular line.

I've got a ton of whiskies that have gone up but my golden rule is I never buy stuff because of what you think it will do; buy it because you like it and that way is if/when the market implodes you're left with something you like to drink.

    • +1

You bought 3 bottles of Hibiki 17 (for about $5k?), but you prefer Proper no Twelve?

      • Bought 4 bottles for $150 each while I was in Japan before production was discontinued.

        • +2

          Great deal!
I’m honestly more interested in how a person enjoys Proper no. Twelve though. I’ve never heard someone say that.
Is Conor McGregor standing behind you?

          • @Plimsol: I don't know.
I just love how there's no alcohol burn.

    • Depends What frame of mind you were in

    • yeah had a bottle as the gift and I'm not very impressed

  • Soz haven't posted in a while… Title updated.

    • +3

Damn! I just took my good pitchfork down from its wall mount and gave it an oil too.

      • Hahahaha legend!

  • just get something from these guys, save yourself $50 for imo a better whisky, and it supports local business https://tinsheddistillingco.com.au/collections/all

    • What do I win , now I've entered the comp?

    • $99 for 200ml though.did you go gold or silver? what are your thoughts

  • +1

Overpriced. Not because it’s better, just supply / demand.

  • +1

FYI First Choice is $145 too and 10% cashback at CB and free delivery FREEDEL50

    • can you find stock tho?

  • Farrrkkk. Some people obviously not affected by covid shut downs.

    • +1

The rich got richer during the pandemic.

    • I think with lockdowns other expenses have gone down, so..

  • +2

Good price if you're after this but definitely expensive for what you get. If you're gonna pay this price, might as well get Nikka from the barrel.

  • -1

I remember buying these out of the Family Mart in Kyoto for like 12 bucks. Should have bought a few more

    • You mean the 180ml or even 50ml bottle maybe…

700ml has never been that low in Japan & combini generally have the 180ml of these (Hakushu, Yamazaki, etc)

  • If you want to spend about $150 at Dans go and buy the 15yo Glendronarch instead.

  • +1

I have a bottle of Hibiki 21 I bought at the Suntory Yamakazi Distillery for $300AU.
Happy I screwed up the conversion rate that day!
Sorry, I needed to brag about that one.

    • +2

Nice work; my best is a bottle of Nikka 15YO I paid $50 in Tokyo 10 years ago. Got two bottles, drank one which was fantastic and never got round to opening the second so it's now just stored in a cool dark place

For Relaxing Times…Make it Suntory Time…

  • Costco has these at $130

  • Got 2 bottles @$118 with 10% Cashrewards and 10% coles team member discount.

    • CR is 10% for wine only?

      • CR has 10% CB with First Choice (not Dan's)

  • found one at FCL for $145 combined with 20%off 200 spend coupon + 2000 FB points. works out to about $110. All that effort for what used to be its shelf price few yrs ago.
