Cheapest I've see at the moment (correct me if i'm wrong). I have the green one. And it's a good solid watch.

Anyone able to organise a strapcode deal?

    • +2

Careful on the straps as the Sumo is a very hard watch to buy straps for. Its case is thick and the strap bars in the lugs are positioned further away from the case than most watches; you end up with massive gaps between the strap bar and the watch case. The watch is also chunky so it needs a chunky strap for thing to look balanced.

I don't like the OEM bracelet as it makes the watch very top heavy and the only after market strap I've liked on mine is a crafter blue one. It's odd because most Seiko's work really well on aftermarket straps.

      See this thread:
      https://www.watchuseek.com/threads/sumo-strap-gap-issue-anyo…

And regarding the need for a thick strap, have a look at the on-wrist pic of this strap. Relative to the case the strap is very, very thin:

Just got the green one from past deal, this version of sumo (third), is not as big as the precious one. If you have any modern Seiko or citizen diver, this watch will not feel much bigger, the watch and bracelet are much better than in photo. This watch feels premium and totally justify the price. Plus Starbuy is always the best to deal with.

  • Hey am new to watches, had a quick question most of the sites do not mention BPH for these watches.

I was wondering where can I see BPH for this watch and also which would be a beginner 32800 BPH watch to buy?

    • +1

Just google the model number of the movement. Why is BPH a concern for you?

      • Thanks! Good Question, i have 2 watches currently:-
        Citizen CA4453-14E
        Seiko SGEG99J

both have this tick tick movement, I was looking for something smoother(sweeping movement of seconds hand) and am assuming that would mean getting something with higher BPH, than 18800 or 21600?

        • +1

If smoothness of a sweeping hand is for you just go all in and get something with a Spring Drive movement

        • +4

Any auto will look much nicer than the quartz movements for second hand sweep.
Since the movement is listed, you can check BPH which I believe is 21,600.
This is kind of the standard BPH, if its higher, its usually listed as a high beat movement.

Do note, the since high beat movements are beating significantly more, its usually recommended to have them serviced more regularly, so they're more expensive initially and upkeep is more expensive.

          • @Sythe: Thanks, any recommendations to enter this type of watch range, either spring drive or 32800 BPH with sweeping seconds hand?

            • +1

              @ozy86: Depends on your budget.
Personally I really like the engineering behind the spring drive and the GS Snowflake is iconic, but depends if you want dressy, sporty, etc.

              • @Sythe: Thank you!

                • +1

@ozy86: If you're just after a sweeping seconds hand pretty much any automatic or manual wind watch will do the job. The higher the frequency the smoother will be but as outlined above there are tradeoffs (esp. around servicing). Have a read of this basic info but be warned that you're heading down a slippery slope.

If you're just starting off some advice: take your time and work out what you want; don't think you need a watch from x, y and z categories (you could just like/dislike one style of watch), don't buy a watch because it's cheap, and don't buy a watch because you think it will fill the void of something more expensive (esp. if you're the type of person who will go out and get the expensive thing anyway).

                  • @Gunnar: I agree you are right and both the watches I own/ previously mentioned are in the $200 range.

I am looking for something different to add to my collection, either with a higher BPH or Pointer date style watch up to a budget of $500 - $600. I guess those are hard to find in my budget.

also, I am new so maybe I don't know yet if there is something that exists within my budget with those particular specifications

                    • +1

@ozy86: For either style you're probably going to have to go vintage watches. Have you looked on Watchuseek? I was a very active poster but don't use it anymore but you do get solid advice.

I'd post a thread asking for advice in the general forum or, better yet, the affordable forum. The regulars in the affordables forum are really good.
