If you don't want to put anything on the wall, you can get the empty block or the flash magnetic block where they stick to the outside
No idea if you can find them cheaper, these just seemed reasonable in my quick search

  • +2

2 piece with sharpener is still in stock.

  • +1

Thanks, just bought. Still in stock.

  • why are the RRP of knives such a crock of shit. RRP is always like double the advertised price

they must think the consumer is stupid

    • To fool husband's to buy as a gift for their wives thinking they got a 'killah' deal.

  • +1

Got the 2pc with sharpener. Thanks!

    Hoping it is good.

  • Cheers got the 2 + sharpener also. Don't forget cashback.

  • Just a tip guy's, Kmart $10 knives are just as good. Get a good sharpener and sharpen them once every year, they last for decades. My $20 Kmart knife set is 15 years old and sharp as anything. My cousin has a $500 Wustof set or some similar sounding 'fancy brand', my Kmart knives may not 'feel' as hefty as those but they cut, chop and slice just as well. These expensive 'chef' knives are all bollocks, just sharpen your existing cheap knives.

    • The IKEA 3 stages knife sharpener is good enough for most people IMO.

  • +3

I seriously dont get OzB taste in knives.

Cheap yes but still overpriced for the quality at that discounted price. Furi are the most overpriced/marketed of the celebrity sets because of one of those cooking shows.

Furi knives are 52HRC hardness rating, basically the same as any regular cheap set including the ALDI ones… Even inferior to Baccarat ID3s (53HRC) and Globals (56HRC).

Good way to use Myer giftcards… That you got gifted…

    • Yeah, they're junk. But saying so is a good way to get downvoted or ignored as people rush to grab the "bargain."

      • Yeah.. Been on OzB for years. Don't really care about vote scores, i exist to help others, and here for the bargains that have sent me poor.. don't need validation from others especially an anonymous online forum at that, and especially from those that get offended at truths.

        • -1

No, me either. I mean, if you want a definition of clueless, just look at the upvotes for the rubbish - 277 and counting…

    • Is hardness all that makes a knife good?

      • +2

A knife made of harder steel will stay sharper longer.

Anything below a 52 HRC rating would be too soft for a kitchen knife. For example, the average axe has an HRC of about 50, so the sharpened edge can withstand the impact of being hurled into a solid piece of wood without snapping off.
An HRC rating of 52-54 is soft but would make a reasonable, inexpensive kitchen knife.
Professionals and experienced home cooks look for kitchen knives with an HRC rating of 55 and above.

Most premium steels are in the 59-64 HRC range. A rating above this number indicates extreme brittleness. It would make an unreliable knife because you could easily snap the blade while using it.

        • Is there much else to consider apart from hardness?

          • +1

@misguided_will: A steels ability to be sharpened and honed at a more acute, sharper angle, directly correlates to steel hardness because of the steel powder used. think of a triangular container filled with bigger ball-bearings, vs a similar container with far smaller ones, the tip angle of the one with the bigger ball-bearings will be limited to that steel granule size.. basicallly "resolution".. like comparing 1080p to 4k, or 192kbps mp3 to 320kbps mp3.

The manufacturing process is also important. Though most modern manufacturers no longer hammer knives and swords over anvils for countless hours, there are machines that do a similar hammering/tempering process, vs a solid block of streel just cut and ground to a sharpness that is mass produced in factories.

For one "Japanese Stainless Steel" isn't a thing, it's a gimmick. Real Japanese Steels would never use stainless solely for the whole knife and thats the dead give away. VG-10/Damasc isn't stainless hence they are forged with 60+ layers of carbon and lower grade stainless around it to protect it from careless household users who may actually put it in the dishwasher. If you want a decent stainless knife around 56-58HRC, go a German brand like Zwillings.

            • @dsp26: Seems like a lot to it but is the average family man on cooking duties in house likely to appreciate the difference? I mean I dunno. I don't drink a lot of wine but I honestly don't think I could tell the difference between a $20 bottle of wine and a $1,000 bottle. In sure the differences are there though

@misguided_will: "You don't change the world by giving people what they say they want, but by giving them something they didn't know they needed" - Fred Vogelstein.

Like with any purchase, you are right, no one will ever know until you get something better. Same once you go to a Dyson vacuum versus a normal vacuum. That logic stands for any product, and people are petty and will defend their choices.. especially on Ozbargain when you call out people still bought an overpriced junk bargain.

        • +1

          THIS! What @Orico said.

Household knives are intentionally softer because most users wouldn't know how to treat a knife sharper than 56HRC. Harder is always more brittle and will obviously shatter and chip. Same law of physics for metals and MOHs hardness scale.. but even really basic things like:
          - Wooden chopping boards only. Plastic yes… but questionable for bacteria
          - No big chopping/cleaving motions. Get a separate Chinese style butchers cleaver for that.
          - Most knife users (like my wife) on a chefs knife for example, will try to CHOP a veg straight down which will have a slight impact on the board, versus, a gliding motion on the board to SLICE the veg
          - No dishwasher. Because of the acids in dishwashing tablets will eat away at the sharpness at a molecular level which increases the chances of chipping the already thin/acute tip
          - Not drying it straight away even if handwashed and drip drying them along with their knives and forks

52HRC? Are you sure about that?

I'm no great fan of Furi knives, but most information online suggests that they have a Rockwell Rating of 56. And whilst I wont be trading out any of my Shun Premier's for them, they're a bit better than your regular Aldi or Baccarat knives…

    • Where states 52°?
      56 according to here

      • -4

False. And that link is the only site i've seen reference these as 56HRC… and that link on their site doesnt event exist.

        • In my searching, I didn't find anywhere reference 52, only 56 so what is to say the only number I can find is wrong?

          • -3

            Here are the facts:
            - Furi Global is an American headquartered Company
            - Founded by Mark William in Brisbane, Hence Australian Designed knives
            - of "Japanese Style"
            - Mass produced in China cut from steel instead of being forged
            - using inferior CrMov German Stainless Steel which is 52HRC

And no.. don't try to confuse CrMov with the vastly superior X50CrMov15 (56hrc) or X100CrMov (58hrc)…

Why on earth do you guys think, unlike all other manufacturers, including Baccarat and Global, this mob doesn't actually stamp the steel used on their knives? And sell at markup prices at Myer… its a piece of shit.

If you guys are so intent on defending your overpriced "bargain", you can go dig into patents yourself.. not going to waste anymore time on this. There is no evidence in recent years on their own and any distributor site if they upgraded to higher quality cromova steel. Trust me, if they did, they would proudly stamp it on their knives like Globals.

As I've commented in other knife threads in the past, though not scientific, I have scratched Furi and Baccarat knives with Wusthofs and Globals.. they are that soft.

            • @dsp26: Even IF, and a big IF, the manufacturing and tempering process was better than just simply cutting the knives straight off a block of steel and honing, you get max +2HRC out of it.

        • +1

Three of the top five google hits for furi + knives + rockwell indicate a rating of 56 HRC. Nothing I could see on the first page indicates 52 HRC.

          https://www.google.com/search?q=furi+knives+rockwell

Don't get me wrong. These are not top quality knives. But you don't get top quality knives for $20. And I'd take them every day of the week and twice on Sundays over a Baccarat or Scanpan.

As others have said, Mark Henry is an engineering genius, and not withstanding the softer European-esque steel involved, there is infinitely more than hardness that goes to the quality of a knife and these are a very well balanced knife. For $20 odd dollars.

  • Is it possible to cancel Myer orders before they've shipped?

  • Still no confirmation from Myer re my order. PayPal funds taken out but nothing else?

  • Yep no confirmation here either, but paypal funds taken.

    Anyone had a confirmation yet?

    • +1

Contacted Myer, all OK, reckoned they had email probs

  • Hi Rob,

Thanks for shopping with Myer Online.

We’re so sorry to advise that after searching for the Furi Pro 3pc prep knife set (539121790) at our fulfilment locations, we were unable to locate this item as we are out of stock nationwide.

    Sad me

  • Same boat - missed the Asian 3 piece set on the day, just had the 3 piece preparation set cancelled.

East/West Santoku and Diamond Fingers Set allegedly still coming.

  • I ordered the knife set and paid by gift card.
but there is no email confirmation .

I went to check my myer account , my myer account is disappeared, error message on log in page shows no such email address for account.

I linked my purchase with my myer one as well, but no purchase record on myer one account.

Is myer hacked or they had a IT problem?

  • I paid for the set of kitchen knives, but I can't see the order in my account.
    My account is empty!

Tried call myer but no one is answering my call!

  • called myer for 2 hours waiting time plus talk time.

my order disappeared in their system

    but gift card used.

what a shit store myer is.

    will not shop from myer

    • So what was their solution to this mess? I have no confirmation of any purchase.

  • Anyone else get an auspost notification from Fackelman Housewares? I’m guessing they’re shipping straight from what I’m assuming are a distributor of these knives, otherwise can’t find any other link

    • Mine came from Fackelman today. Box came already opened! Terrible packing.

  • +1

Have just received an email from Myer confirming item has been shipped

  • Just got my notification email too, was expecting a refund as it was taking so long

  • Glad to see others who ordered have at least started to ship…
Anyone else's order still sitting in 'Preparing' like mine is?
I think this is a record with Myer… lol almost 2 weeks and no update / nothing ?!?!
I'm not game enough to sit on hold for 2 hrs over a $65 purchase.

    • I had to call Myer for a different order the other day and my wait time was 40 mins. Not ideal, but thankfully not two hours.

You could Fackelmann a call though. They’re the ones dispatching the orders, and their wait time was ~10 seconds.

    • Just got a cancellation email this evening.
After 2.5 weeks of no communication… I think Myer have got to pick up their game!

  • My order is still 'preparing' as well

  • still waiting

  • Mine arrived today. Took ages between the manifest being created to arriving though.

  • cant believe my order was actually shipped and it's finally arrived

  • Just got order delivered, but the magnetic wooden box was damaged…

  • Finally received an auspost tracking update too that the item is coming from Fackleman Housewares somewhere stuck in Melbourne.
