Which Australian Carrier Allows Intl Roaming and Receive Calls in China?

Spouse might be going to China, waiting for application to leave Australia. Need a roaming number for parents to call from Australia Landline as they do not use smartphone, let alone apps such as messenger. Probably be in China for about 3 months, not long term.
Any suggestion and advice? Thanks.

  • They should all allow roaming in China. Did you mean something else?

    • Thanks, the link doesn't seem to show anything specific? Spouse believes only vodafone hv the plan to enable intl roaming, for some reason. Are there any prepaid plans that would allow roaming and receiving calls when in China?

That link shows you the charges for international roaming to make and receive calls and texts, which obviously means it has international roaming.

For a three month trip, it's probably more cost effective for spouse to get a local SIM than paying international roaming costs or daily add-on packages.

For the parents, a simple mobile and prepaid sim with $5 international talk prepaid SIM will give them 300 minutes talk to China per month.

  • Not all AU carriers allow for roaming (some VMO's don't believe it or not).

The major players - Voda, Optus, and Telstra all do though.

I'm wondering if you are talking about banning certain sites and usage from China though? Which means something different… Certain apps may not work in China. In which case, you either need a VPN, or download the China equivalent and use it here in AU. wechat for example.

  • Dude, most unlimited international calling packs have China listed in them.. Lyca, lebara, boost, optus. They all have it

  • Telstra allows roaming for $5 per day, Optus allows roaming for $10 per day and Vodafone same.

Not the most cost efficient for 3 months though.

Will she have access to Wifi? If so you can get a local Australian number on a Softphone app. So your parents would call the local number and your spouse would answer from her Softphone app. She will just need wifi or a local data plan.

    • all Wi-Fi in china will be going through the Great Firewall, meaning all your google, fb, linkedin and other networks won't be available.

      • Not even with a VPN?

        • make sure to use ShadowSocks, as all your standard VPNs (Nord, Windscribe) won't work

  • Don't use your real phone in China. As soon as you connect to any local network it will be filled with spyware etc.

wonder how many of those who negged me ever been to China…

  • Telstra roaming $10 per day,
    Voda - $5 per day.

I would rather suggest getting an e-SIM via someone like airalo they are providing cheap data only plans that bypass the great firewall of china.

PS all roaming providers also go direct bypassing the GFW.

  • Thank you all for the responses. Will do my own research from these suggestions. Just a pain that spouse family (including both brothers) doesn't use smartphone. The 2nd brother does but only use emails and not the apps which makes it so difficult. Alternatively, the in-laws can call me in Australia and I wechat spouse so spouse can call home.
