Toshiba 1TB Canvio Basics Portable Hard Drive Black $44 + $5.95 Metro Delivery (Free C&C/over $55 Spend) @ Officeworks

310

Officeworks appear to be clearing out older model Toshiba canvio basics hard drives. I currently use this model to store my Wii U collection (hello 2012) and find it to be up to the task.

2TB is also available at $62.90.

It works? Or do you use a Y-cable to attach?

I want to use a portable drive with my Wii U but I am a bit wary of the limited power delivery over the USB 2 ports.

You need a Y cable, and use the 2 usb port at the back of the wii u to power it.

      • Yep, no problems with a y cable. $6.95 posted on eBay.

        • Ah. I have the ethernet adaptor plugged into the other port, so no go on the Y-cable for me.

    • Would it support the 2tb drive ?

      • Wii U supports up to 2tb

      • I was using a 3tb drive at one stage. Worked, but only used 2tb.

    • Hey, we have the Fringe! Not right now, but at some point.

hmmm. comes up as $81.00 for me. do you have a code or? TIA.

I can confirm when I looked (yesterday) Amazon had it at the same price.

Either Amazon has upped the price, or sold out and the price is from third parties.

          • @ChiefAJ: All good, thanks just the same.

Have you checked out the recent Wii U "ports" of GTA 3 and Vice City? I burned through GTA 3 the other day and it was a joy to play on the U, made me feel a little shame for not touching the thing at all since I got Retro Arch running GameCube on the Series X last year.

Tempted to grab one (or one of the 2TB ones mentioned for 55 if I could find one) for the Series S. Get by fine with storage but (profanity) it, at that price why not.

    • I saw they were available and looking forward to trying them out.

GTA 3 was a blast. I know on the phone version (though it's been a few years) and the PC version (which I've only played for about 20 minutes here and there every few years, not a PC guy) you can freely turn the camera around and whatnot, but it was a revelation to be able to do it on a console version for the first time.

3, and VC (and San An too, obvs) absolutely do hold up. Graphically, they've aged. Story wise, definitely. Mechanically, yeah no duh. Like they are old games and they show it, but they will always be a delight to revisit, little "quality of life" tweaks like the aforementioned camera, free aiming, checkpoint saves and whatnot, all of which are in the Wii U version, go a looooooooong way in modernizing these classics.

As it currently stands, at least until the supposed remaster / remake / rerelease / port / conversion / reimagining / whatever the (profanity) it turns out to be, comes out, this is my preferred way to play GTA 3. I mean, to be fair, I would say the Xperia Play is still the best way but that's basically impossible at this point, whereas you can still pick up a Wii U pretty easy at EB and chuck this on there. Absolutely fantastic job done here.

        • BTW - do you run these off external HDD or NAND?

Grab the repositories now. As of yesterday I heard they're being sued by "take two" and will probably lose / repos gone.

  • Seem to have quite a few bad reviews though.

    • It seems to be the way of store reviews. You get one and it works and you don't bother to write a review, but you always do if it fails. Ratings on officeworks are consistent with the other well known brands such as Seagate and WD.

Not negging your post and agree not many people review when no probs with an item, but still not good when a hard drive packs up after little use.
