Best Place to Buy Visa Gift Cards

I need to reach an American Express spending goal as part of a sign up bonus. It will be very difficult to reach unless I buy visa gift cards to then pay other bills in advance (i.e. health insurance).

Does anyone offer a better deal then paying $507.95 for a $500 visa gift card? Such as officeworks below.

  • I'm not sure where else to get prepaid Visa gift cards, besides Woolies, Coles, Big W, etc. The fee is always $5-$7 more than what the gift card itself is worth.

Coles has a deal where you get 2000 flybuys points for each card. Max of 5 cards. Ends tomorrow night.

  • Auspost has $500, $5.95 fee. I don't think there's any lower than that fee on a $500 card.

Auspost is considered government spend so may not count towards required spend.

Following on from JIMB0, a lot of Coles supermarkets in my area had plenty of $250 cards in stock over the weekend, so you may be lucky in reaching your spending goals!

Speaking of Coles, if you need more prepaid gift cards, they are running another weekly promotion starting on Wednesday where you will earn 1000 bonus Flybuys points (on top of the 105 base Flybuys points) for purchasing a $100 EFTPOS gift card (with a $5.95 card purchase fee). However, the downsides are:

    • You only earn $5.52 in Flybuys points for each $100 EFTPOS gift card (up to five gift cards), so the value of the Flybuys points is 43c less than the card fee. That’s the only reason I did not post that promotion here…

    • These prepaid EFTPOS cards currently can only be used in-store. You may be able to go a physical branch of your health insurance provider and pay your premiums ahead there, or you could try to use these cards to pay for your bills at an Australia Post outlet, but the in-store limitation is something to keep in mind.

BIG W, Woolworths and The Reject Shop also sell the Visa prepaid gift cards you’ve linked in your post, but they rarely (if ever) come with any good deals that help fully or partly offset the associated card purchase fees.

I guess you rarely see good deals on these prepaid gift cards, as they can be used for money laundering or other fraudulent purposes, so retailers are usually mindful of that…

    • O I didn't realise you can only use these cards in store. Thank you.

Sorry, I probably wasn’t clear enough in my comment.

Prepaid Mastercard and Visa gift cards can be used in-store or online at most merchants, but there are a number of merchants who don’t accept them, because they are unverified cards (i.e. they do not have a person’s name or address attached to them), hence the bit around fraud and money laundering. It is hard to tell which merchants don’t accept them unless you try to use them, but I know the following merchants don’t accept them:

        • True Rewards (including Cashrewards’ gift card portal)

        • Suncorp Benefits (including AAMI Lucky Club)

Prepaid EFTPOS gift cards (on the other hand) can only be used in-store, because EFTPOS is currently only accepted in-store.

        • Thanks for clarifying
