Wi-Fi Extension Upstairs

Hey team,

I have a double story house and use a tp-link archer downstairs connected to my NBN Ethernet cable from the wall. It’s great and I get 100mbs downstairs without any worry.

Upstairs however, I get 20mbs on my laptop. It’s not ideal as work zoom calls and all that adult entertainment can buffer at times.

I have a power over Ethernet adapter in my office where I get an Ethernet cable and use that for a media tower.

My question is, can I just buy a wifi mesh adapter, plug the power over Ethernet cable into that and should get better wifi upstairs?

Can someone explain this to me in layman’s terms as I’m not a teccy person.

Extra points for recommending me a product to use.

Thanks brains trust

Get the mesh set like this one:

Plug in one at the router, the other two upstairs and it will work well.

  • Until you buy a mesh set, you can use aluminium foil to direct the wifi signal upstairs as well. It saved me the cost of an extender.

Are you wearing it on your head as a hat too? :)

      Jokes!

      • Hahaha. Yes to keep the 5g waves out 😂.

Seriously though aluminium diverts the Wi-Fi waves in the direction you want. You can use it as a temporary solution and put it on the antenna like a funnel. It works.

        • And to avoid catching C-19?

          • @mickyb80: Hahhaa. Yes use on ya face and mouth

  • I bought a Google Wifi with 1 point. Plug in the Ethernet from modem to GW. Point upstairs just in the middle area to a powerpoint. Relatively easy to set up (I'm not a tech person either). However, I had to leave my 2.4ghz up on my original modem because I have a lot of smart devices that only connect to that band. The GW will send out some combined 2.4+5 GHz thingy. It is quite a PITA if someone turns off one of my smart devices and it won't reconnect as it's thinking it is the GWs band (they both have the same network name) and I have to unplug GW and reconnect my device . I did google before and it seems to be a problem where you can't split the bands.

  • I was in same situation, and suggest a cheaper alternative if you're up for just a little google/youtube instructions:
    1. Buy another Wireless Router (make sure its a gigabit) Statice plug your ethernet cable in to that.
    2. Search on Whirlpool for guides in extending your wifi with a second router, I found several specific to mine (I chose Archer A6 to have similar admin interface to existing archer downstairs)
    3. Don't use same Wifi SSIDs, instead make the new one OFFICE and OFFICE_5G. Again some good youtube tutorials explained the reasons, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kf1mPd_ofhU essentially the two routers don't allow for a seamless handover between them should you change floor whilst connected (unlike mesh I believe) so by having diff SSIDs you can specify the stronger wifi.

  • thanks legends, your knowledge is most appreciated!
