Sony 55" Bravia Full HD LCD TV $999 at Retravision (KDL55EX500)

21

Similar to the Costco deal posted last month, but $49 more. Still a great price, and is under the $1,000 barrier. I guess with new models soon to come out, 2010 models such as this will be discounted.

Sony Bravia 55" Full HD LCD TV
Model No: KDL55EX500 (2010)
100Hz/BRAVIA Engine 3

While the Retravision site still displays its old pricing ($1,399), page 12 of today's Herald Sun has a full page spread advertising the TV.

  • Just so you guys know, an EX500 is last (last?) year's model and the cheapest, entry-level version. I had the 40EX500 and it was okay, but you can't use them as a PC screen because their graphics processors can't be completely turned off and cause corruption on text / subtitles. I didn't see the same thing happening on the 55EX500 in Sony Central when I was trying to diagnose what was happening, but buyer beware anyway …

    • Not last year 2010.

Hi guys I was considering getting it a couple of months back - being a sub $1000 Full HD Tv with 100Hz from Sony. I read a fair few reviews online for the unit - and some did complain there was a 'burning smell' when it was being played: [http://reviews.cnet.com/flat-panel-tvs/sony-bravia-kdl-55ex500/4864-6482_7-33949785-5.html?tag=userReviews;summaryList], nevertheless due to the price i decided to go for it anyway. At the time Videopro or BBB were selling it for a grand so i actually price matched it at JB for the same with 200 more for 5 year warranty and delivery. However when I did look at it in store I did appreciate the difference between LCD and LED…and ended up going back to the drawing board a couple of days later, eventually getting a Samsung: UA55D6000.
Sony: 30.7kg (with stand). Width of screen: 105mm
Samsung: 22.2Kg (with Stand). Width of screen: 29.9 mm
The Sony was barebones…the Samsung is a smart tv, plays movies direct from usb (mkv etc..).
Mind you, it costs a fair deal more ($1600-100 cashback = $1500) for delivered with 5 year warranty…but I reckon it was worth it. So yeah some food for thought, if you have the cash go for a newer LED.

  • I wouldn't even consider this LCD.

  • I believe my parents have this model, or at least one that's similar. (Older model on the cheaper end of the Bravia scale) It's a beautiful TV - great picture quality and huge display. I was really impressed with it for the price.

Doesn't have all the fancy smart TV features such as internet TV etc, but they generally only use it for TV/DVD and Blurays anyway. Plus, that stuff is always out of date in a years time, and you can replicate all that functionality better through various media player boxes if you're so inclined.
