If only it didn't use the stupid app

  • 5 years old, does it compare to Sonos Play 5?

    • at 99$?

  • Is it any good?

Anyone who got this, please share your experiences.

    • A few years ago I bought 2 of these s6's, 2 of the s2's and the sb1+ soundbar. As stated the app is terrible, the s2's are serviceable as is the soundbar if you run it through the alexa or google home interfaces but I have never been able to get either of the s6's to work even after many firmware updates / hard resets. I definitely would not recommend. The s6's will probably go in the next verge collection.

      • Thanks rhysjc25 for the info

    • Bought some on clearance about this price a year ago. I mostly stream to them via Spotify casting, ocassionly via the play-fi app.

Initial setup can be painful, 2.4g wifi seems best, will occasionally drop out of the stereo fonfig and require re-setting up.

I don't use the Polk app at all.

Sound quality is actually very good for $99, and really nice in stereo group.
Mine came with Bluetooth dongles, which plug into the USB port at the back and offer Bluetooth, and you won't need to use an app if you use that, but also can't have stereo groups, etc.

    • I have two of these, from about 3 years ago and they were on clearance then!

The app is horrible and limited (for no reason) functionality - you can only bring music in from certain apps.
The sound isn't to my taste, it's kind of…muddy?? Don't know exactly how to describe it, but it's not nice.

The most frustrating thing - We moved home and changed to NBN. We had to change our WIFI router and one of the S6es has just stopped responding to setup. You can play music via 3.5mm input, but it will no longer connect to WIFI (it doesn't even appear in the app). There is no help from the company and I cannot find anything on the internet to help. I know it's three years old, but still, I expect it to last longer than that.

I am, right now, using the Omni A1 as to connect my PC and turntable to some nice bookshelf speakers.

I also have the device that allowed me to stream music to my main stereo in the lounge, and two of the smaller P-series speakers that I was using as a pair in the bedroom. The other three devices are currently packed away.

I cannot recommend jumping into this ecosystem.

The app is hot garbage, and while they announced Google Home integration, they also said that all current-gen at the time (which I believe this is) did not have the ability to have that added just by software update, as the hardware was not capable.

The sound quality of the speakers was decent for the price, and the $600 discount is very nice. I even had one in my cart just now, and was about to pull the trigger and decided that I could probably just wait until I could internally justify something better.

  • $699(regular price) is a lot for a speaker.

So I guess quality must be good as people as everyone says App is crap and people still buying it.

    • Sound is great, especially in stereo. Play-fi app isn't great, Polk one worse. Will sometime drop off network and have to be reset up.
Can stream without using the apps after the initial setup via Spotify direct.

Mine came with Bluetooth adaptors, so can just use that, don't know if these do.

I'm happy with mine at ~$100, but I'd be pissed at RRP

  • And I do have Sonos bar, subwoofer and Sonos One.

Can I add this to the Sonos hub?

I almost pulled the trigger until I found the postage is $30 per item.

    • not even ordering 2 makes it cheaper. $60 ouch.

  • Can you use two to create a stereo pair?

    • +1

Yes, via the DTS play fi app, at least for streams compatible with that (Spotify, dlna server, etc)

This was meant to be an exclusive on stereonet…. I am not sure this should have been reposted. The Store specifically stated that on the post.

Bought two from JB Hifi sale a couple of years ago. I wouldn’t recommend them due to bad app experience.

  • noticed these have a 3.5mm audio plug, whats the sound quialty like for those old school who want to play music from a MD player or directly corded from there phone?

Please don't buy from this store.

Absolutely ridiculous customer experience with Digital Cinema.

They cancelled my order for just enquiring about their return policies.

The sales person was rude and in a hurry and didn't forget to mention me that if you buy this again then don't call us for the delivery, we will dispatch when it comes or we can cancel your order.

They seem dodgy, just posted these deals to attract traffic to their website.

Please don't buy from them, I also posted this on their F.B page and instead of the clarification they deleted the comments and blocked me from posting again.

Ozbargain community, please be aware and refrain buying from them.

They cancelled my order without asking me.

These fools haven't even published their return policy in their website and expect people to buy without hasseliing them.

If these are so reluctant in answering people's query, display on your website.

And isn't by Australia law they need to display their return policies on their website?

I am gonna create a F.B page and will share it with 1000 plus groups to make people aware of their dodgy policies..

  • I ordered this last week and got delivery today!

Took a little bit of time to set it up and update firmware …. But finally got it up and running!

As the posts already point out this speaker does not have any digital assistant built in so i connected it to my echo dot via provided 3.5 mm male-male cable and asked Alexa to play off some songs from Spotify! The sound quality was okay …. Nothing great!

Then i saw it supports Spotify group play and just used my phone to play Spotify directly via the polk speaker! The sound quality was so much better playing directly!

99$ for the speaker and 30$ for delivery comes to 129$

But for me it serves the purpose as i just needed a wireless speaker for streaming Spotify!
