  • Really good!

  • Great price! I was almost gonna buy it but I’m not sure if this is the updated version with Bluetooth 5.0 after checking the tech specs. Has anyone gotten a pair from Scorptec recently?

  • +1

Just realised after my post was edited there really is free shipping once you get through the login/registration. At $399 delivered this is a very good price!

Pity I really needed white so went with Melbourne Hifi.

  • I have some A5s that Ive been very happy with for the past 8ish years.

how are the HD6's in comparison, for anyone thats upgraded?

(I realise these are HD3s, but figured audioengine people will be checking this post out)

    • Just thought I would post here, I bought A5+ which I disliked even after 3 months burn in, lack of bass, not much control on bass, treble was too pin point. I bought HD6 instead which I also disliked as I wanted to use them for the TV also and they really had no bass or treble for it, and really didn't have the power I was after. I ended up with Edifier s3000pro which frankly is in a league of it's own. I think the AudioEngines are very particular if you only like their way of sound profile. Haven't tried H3 though.

      • S3000pros aren't exactly in the same price range, but thanks for your input.

mine are paired with a Jamo 10" sub so low end isnt a problem.

        • Well only another $140 to get the S3000pro, which is pretty much the average sale price of the HD3. I guess the issue is now you have tiny speakers and a 10" sub with nothing in between right? So it really depends on the sound profile you are after. The tweeter on the s3000pro as an example is exceptional and ridiculous that you can get it in a product with the feature/specs and price.
          10" sub for computer speakers!!!!

          • @onlinepred: TV(so games/film/shows/YT) and critical listening (Rpi with a DAC running volumio). im using some dinky little Yamaha desktop speakers for the PC.

the HD6 are $800 at melbourne hifi (oos)

            • +1

@Laserface: Oh yea the edifier s2000 or s3000 will blow the HD3 away, they are tiny little speakers with much less power and the tweeter is designed for near field listening, these are after all computer speakers primarily.

I put the S3000pro in place of my (sold) Samsung 7.1.2 soundbar, and the sound they produce is insane, like a huge sub is hidden somewhere in the room. Mids/treble is what seals the deal though. I originally had HD6 + S8 sub, and IMO the S3000pro has far more accurate bass and can control it till it gets very very low.

  • Has anyone compared these to Edifier alternatives? I found the HD6 and A5+ to be very limited for their asking price. Given you can get edifier s2000v2 or 880 for less I was interested.

The major selling point of the Audioengine HD3 is the inclusion of a built-in DAC. Typically a good DAC can run you around $150 to $200, and can completely change the way you listen to your music. And, we’re happy to say that the DAC in the Audioengine HD3 is a good DAC. Plus, the fact that it also acts as a headphone amplifier that’s able to power even the most intense headphones is a major benefit for people with more premium cans.

    • That’s one of the ways I justified it as I have some cans which need amplification but I’m too lazy to have to plug in and connect my amp each time, so I ended up rarely using them.

    • I am more interesting in the fact that I can by-pass the internal PC/MAC's DAC by using USB cable and let the HD3's DAC handle. TBH, I am not sure how much it boost the sound quality but it def better than using the PC's DAC.
Comparing to even the A5+ or the Edifier (any model from 1855+), I guess the speakers themselves probably better than the HD3 but the fact that the source (DAC) of the HD3 is better. Not really sure which I should choose now.

  • This is a great product!

6 year old speakers for $130? Is that really a good deal? Or do they continually update the internals?

    • Wait until you check out some of the much pricier audio options which may never be updated… but in all seriousness, speakers are one of those product types which if made well, can last a lifetime (figuratively speaking).

      • Yeah, I understand (currently got a pair of B&W 607 S2s in the living room) but I just don't see much value in the discount here given their age.

        • Unfortunately not everything gets cheaper or discounted over time. It’s a fallacy which I got used to assuming from most tech products.

          • @jace88: I totally agree with you to a point. Many popular tech products maintain value well over the first year such as the iPhone. But for a pair of Edifiers? You're having a laugh. I have a pair of Edifier s880db and I got a bigger % discount than this deal 6 months after release.

While I agree that the speaker and amp tech in these speakers could hold some value, the DAC will have been far exceeded by now. So will the other components such as the bluetooth module.

So I agree with your sentiment for some things but certainly not these speakers.

            • @C0mbat: I haven't received mine yet so can't really comment but after a bit of "internet research" (questionable I know), the HD3 are still considered the best desktop speakers in their class for the size/RRP in 2021, so I figured with 20-25% off, it's a decent buy. I did look at the other desktop speakers of a similar size/price but the Audioengine HD3 (and A2+) seem to have pretty positive reviews, and will fit my planned setup of a minimalist desk better than my existing Logitech G560s which also come surprisingly well reviewed, just not from audio enthusiasts! (truth be told I'm upgrading because the cables won't reach the subwoofer on my new standing desk, and I'm a little over the RGB thing).

On a side note, I know someone who uses Audionote Ongaku amplifiers (and Avantgarde speakers) in their living room… I didn't quite appreciate what I was looking at when he showed me it, but I decided to Google it last night and I'm speechless. No chance of a discount even 3 decades after they were launched.

Have this speaker, sounds ok for music maybe a bit too clean. Lacking base through, but I have a bookshelf kef ls50w with sub so maybe I'm judging from another higher speced speaker. Looks great on the desktop. Good price at $399.

  • It's good for desktop pc setup!

  • I wouldn't compare with KEF. It's not a fair comparison

  • +1

Might be Apple vs Orange but how is this compare to Edifier 1855DB. Is it worth x2 price tag?
Using for some music, gaming and mostly on computer.
    Thank you

    • You can add a subwoofer to the 1855. Add a sub and you'll be plenty happy.

      • Thank but I prefer a clean/less busy setup so looking for something that not require an extra sub.

        • You'll be very happy with the 1855. Then if you decide to add a sub later, you can. I have the r1280dbs and mightily impressed. Amazing value. I think u can get 1855 for $150.

    • dont have 1855, but I got the 1700bt. HD3 has a cleaner sound and more details, but bass is not great on both but its not bad on such a small foot print. Was it and upgrade, definitely, was the sound quality double, no.

  • +1

Closest comparison will be Edifier S1000DB. Both have 60 watts per channel

  • +2

Great for a desktop PC. I got the HD3 over the A2 because I wanted a front volume knob.

  • Has anyone bought the audio engine ds1 stands? Any thoughts?

    • +1

They're pretty ugly IMO. Which is why I opted for the Kanto S2 stands.

Audioengine makes an almost exact copy with their DS1M stands.

      • Do you find they really improve the experience? I haven’t got my speakers (or omnidesk) yet so haven’t had to play with positioning but from what I can tell the main benefit is angling up and reducing vibrations to the surface.

        • +1

If you are near field speakers (i.e. on a desk that you sit at) then having them aimed at your ears is best.

In my experience the sound is better when they are aimed up.
