Schweigen PKUM1390-9SP 90cm Under Cupboard Rangehood w/ External Motor $1,735 (& $200 Cashback) Delivered @ Appliances Online

140

Just placed an order for my kitchen renovation so thinking it may help others as well. Only heard good word on how quiet and powerful it is. RRP is $2,899.

Also it qualifies for $200 cashback if ordered before 6/9. You need a photo of your product to claim so probably needs to be delivered by the closing date 31/10. With Commbank cashback offer (in my case $30 back for $300 spend) and Cashrewards (1.7% cashback~=$28), you can get it under $1,500 which is pretty sweet imo. The price is even cheaper than Schweigen Outlet @$2,000

This rangehood includes a 1,600m3/h external motor that will suffice most use cases. We do lots of stir frying and steaks so we need a high air flow. Please note the depth of the rangehood is 390mm, compared to most other schweigen undermount of 269mm in which case it may not fit in the cabinet.

You may need to get an experienced installer to install it, since it is not self circulating and all fumes are expelled to outside your place through the external motor. At this stage I'm still researching on installers - can anyone please recommend an installer in Melbourne east suburbs? Thanks in advance.

Ours was installed by our builder so can’t quite recommend anyone I’m afraid.

Just one thing to note, while these are great, if you have some over sensitive neighbours - like some would have in Melbourne’s inner East - they may complaint of the noise. Mine was particularly vocal about this and even reported us to Boroondara council, but it is under the noise limit plus it is a fair way away from their boundary (about 12m). In any case, we managed to sort it out in the end.

    • Thinking about one of these external motor type units too, but concerned about whether neighbours would complain. In our situation the motor would be a couple of metres from the boundary (but maybe 6-10 metres to neighbours actual houses).

Whispair sales said that it's about the same as an aircon unit. On paper, an aircon unit might have a sound pressure level at 1m of around 50 db(A) but a Whispair, for example, would be 58 db(A) at boost speed which I think would rarely be used..

How did you sort it out, did you have to reduce the noise somehow?

We were doing our landscaping at the time and ended up integrating a tall screen (a green wall) to the design. Looks great from our side and seems to work well as there is no further complaints since.

Pretty sure there is a list of installers on the schweigen website

  • External motor range hoods are great but id never buy a range hood with mesh filters after having one with baffle filters - the work better and so much easier to clean.

any plumber should be able to install, not hard.

    • Wanted the baffle too.. Just couldn’t get one at this price point with comparable airflow rate… well sometimes need to trade off

    • I have had high end units with both mesh and baffles.

Stainless steel baffles win by a huge margin.

    • +1

video from Schweigen on baffle vs mesh.
      - choose first the type of cookings. 😆

      • Thanks eatwell365!
        Mesh for me!!!

Plumbers are pretty handy at installing traditional onboard motor rangehoods however the Schweigen silent rangehoods are different. They require a different skill set and I have seen many Schweigens installed by tradies that needed to be redone. They come with easy to understand instructions but no one reads them hence you end up with a second rate job in a lot of cases. It's best to get the right person in the first place, save time and money and end up with a rangehood that works well and lives up to it's reputation.

      • I agree with you on the reading of manuals but saying “plumbers are only good at onboard motor rangehoods” is a bit of a stretch.
I’ve fixed up plenty of non tradesman, electricians and range hood guys installs which have been total garbage.

        • Worker, I didn't say plumbers are only good at installing onboard motor rangehoods. I have seen plenty of good installs done by plumbers but have also had a lot of customers ring me asking me to fix an install done by a plumber who didn't spend five minutes looking at the instructions. I have also seen bad workmanship done by other trades as well. It seems to be a trend these days that people don't take pride in their work anymore.

    • Agreed, I looked at these and ended up with the Whispair with baffle filters and external motor.

On the lowest setting, it’s so quiet we often forget to turn it off (so now always turn the light on at the same time)

Aussie company & made in Melbourne too!p

Ive got the outdoor version of this for my barbie. I like it, well built and went in easily plus it looks nice too.

    • Would you recommend silent? Is it worth the extra

      • Mine still makes a fairly loud noise on full - but doesnt matter as i've got lots of room. I'd imagine it wouldnt be too pleasant if it was in confined spaces. Probably as loud as an external aircon unit makes is probably a good analogy.

    • Which model please?

I was told that outdoor range hoods were close to useless in an open area.

Is yours in an outdoor kitchen area or mounted over a free standing BBQ against a wall or like?.

  • Wow this looks like commercial kitchen strength one. What do you cook usually?

    • +1

This is not even comparable to commercial ones, if you’ve been to a fish&chips you know what I mean. We cook stir fries, steaks and deep fries at home. The point is it is not only smoky but greasy.. especially for an open plan kitchen, it’s better to have as much fumes extracted as possible.

      • +1

Oh yeah especially open plan, I think not only from functional point of view but aesthetically larger one looks much nicer too

Thanks for heads up OP, ended up going with this one… https://www.appliancesonline.com.au/product/schweigen-pkum11…

Smaller so fits in existing cabinetry… but has 1600 cu/m airflow, nice :).

    $1679
    less 2% Cash Rewards
    less CBA rewards -$30
    less brand cash back -$200

    = $1415

Goodguys selling it for $2798! https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/schweigen-60cm-silent-undermo…

Cheers mate, you've just saved me nearly $1400!

    • Well done!

Bought two couple of weeks back for $1709 each. Price dropped next day to $1698. Got $30 rebate from Westpac. Cash rewards didn’t track. They are investigating. The Rangehood guy will be installing it. We are building so, he has just put in the ducts. He recommended this model because deeper model would cover full depth of the cooktop. He also asked me to avoid baffle filter due the swishing noise it causes.
The company cashback took about a week and a bit.
Didn’t post the deal because quantity available was less than 5. Funny, they called me to say that they could get only one, but whilst they were on the phone stock for another one became available.

  • If I had a forever home I would probably go this.. only issue is finding an installer (not sure on cost) and outdoor noise (I think I am too close to neighbour). I got a Robam in the meantime.. noisy but does the job

    • +1

If you are in Melbourne I cannot recommend the rangehood guy highly enough. He has already come three times for the quote, working it out with the builder, the duct installation. He has to come back at least once more when the appliances are installed. Very reasonable prices. I was surprised.

      • Whats ballpark cost?

    • Which model Robam? I'm looking at the Tornado A818 https://www.robam.com.au/product-page/tornado-a818, the Fotile ems9016 is the other one in the running. Any comments on which would be better welcome,

      • Not sure on Fotile but Robam definitely does the job and sucks everything like a vacuum cleaner. Even burning up steaks no smell. Only issue it sounds like a jet taking off lol

  • How does it compare to Meiya in terms of suction?

  • I too recommend The RangeHood Guy for Melbourne installation!!

    • Ballpark cost?

      • Ballpark cost is like a piece of string. It will depend on the installer, the type of rangehood being installed, the type of house construction etc. It's best to speak to an installer. They may give a quote over the phone but may also require an onsite inspection.

    • Seems a bit dumb how you also need to arrange your own electrical connection. Given their name they should do it all end to end with sub contracting as necessary

      • Wouldn't in most cases there will be a power point to connect an existing rangehood, for for new builds too they will have a powerpoint. Powerpoints will be possibly required if you are putting a rangehood in a non-kitchen location e.g. outdoor barbecue. There also, getting a regular sparky you know or a local will work out cheaper than getting the rangehood installer to arrange one for you. They will put a loading for their time too.

  • We are using one of these.

Cant complain about it. Has a 1000 m3/hr rating. These things have just a fan and filters I do not know the reason for being this expensive. Our one is about 7 years old, had no issues with it with enough capacity to draw spicy cooking.

    • How is the noise level on this?

  • I’ve had the same rangehood installed for over 3 years now. I paid for around $2200 from the good guys. It’s a bit disappointing for me as the indoor unit’s build quality is on par with cheaper builder range brands and does not feel like it’s an European brand. The external motor feels well built though. However, I regret that I didn’t buy the dual motor model as when searing a steak the extraction power isn’t strong enough even on highest level and everyone in the house can tell.

The funniest thing is - my neighbour really hates my external motor when I’m cooking, which is facing their house, and to get even, they installed a similar external motor rangehood from an Australian brand which only cost them $1000ish. And of course, the external motor is facing our house. From the fumes extracted when they are cooking, I can tell that theirs is just as good as mine.

    • I think thats qasair?

      • Sounds about right.

        • Not to me, qasairs are not cheap.

  • @sexy / OP

We used Capital Plumbing for our Schweigan Rangehood. Didn't end up using the Rangehood Guy as he wasn't confident in installing ours (double storey so needed to be a wall installation on HEBEL with the duct snaking through the kitchen bulkhead and pantry).

Couldn't be happier with the installation. Filters are washed weekly and have a lifetime warranty too. It's not completely silent but is quieter than the microwave and dishwasher. You can't hardly smell any cooking throughout the house now!

You won't regret installing one of these. Schweigen HQ is in Mulgrave VIC too - so easy for after sales warranty.

    • Install cost?

    • My filters got destroyed after one years’ weekly wash even though I followed the instructions and set the dishwasher in low temperature. Schweigen asked me to pay $25 shipping and handling for replacement filters and told me that the mash filters weren’t meant to be put in a dishwasher and that they wouldn’t help me next time if I keep using a dishwasher. So much for lifetime warranty.

  • +1

Looked at these as well as many other brands.
Chose a Whispair … choose your style of extractor/rangehood then your motor type.

Very impressed with the quality, extraction and warranty.
Australian company using some European components.

Quite impressive. Baffle filters are the way to go.

    https://whispair.com.au/

  • How does this compare to Gagganau?

  • Schweigen? (profanity)!

  • How do these compare with robams?

Looking for something easy to clean. Sick of mesh filters that clog over time.

  • As the OP mentioned, this is 39cm depth. Standard depth is around 30cm. Make sure you're happy with a deeper top cabinet or a rangehood which juts out. I bought this during the March afterpay deals with a potential cashback and it was a corker of a deal but I had to return it because I underestimated the top depth.

  • in the installation manual (this might help someone, as we want ducted but at most, the outside wall mount is 2m away from the rangehood.. don't think it will be silent):

    Recommended Installation Distance
Isodrive 1600 motor, recommended 5 to 6 metres of flexi ducting and with at least 2 bends.
NOTE: Although less than 5 to 6 metres will increase extraction power this will result in higher noise level.
Maximum duct length is 10 to 15 metres. Check with supplier if longer duct length is required. Do not reduce the
duct size at any time and avoid sharp bends.

    • Can't you just run it on lower speed then?

      • Yes I'm sure we could. Will it still be silent though?
Tossing up something cheaper like a Bosch Serie 8 (6xx M3/hr) or this. But if this is quiet only at low speeds and I assume extraction rates, why bother? (Serious question)
