Mate NBN, Peak Time Issues, Anyone Else?

Hi all,

Have been with mate NBN a little while now, however recently the internet slows to a crawl, am paying for 100/20 and am on FTTP.

Lately it's been incredibly slow only around 6-10pm daily, to the point 720p YouTube takes time, on all devices, phone, PS4, hard wired PC etc

I've since found something REALLY weird, when in peak and I use speed test, the full 100mbps hits and the PC and PS4 will ramp up speed, only when using OOKLA's speed test app..

But back to the original question, what's better out there for $79pm?

Thanks again

Yep I had the same issue. I was with them for just over a month and the speeds were horrendous during peak times. I switched to Superloop and have been super happy since.

Id rather spend the extra $10 a month for their offering and get the advertised speeds.

  • I'm on HFC with them in Brisbane and don't have any problems.

A lot of RSPs do a domain level unblocking, where when certain domains (like Speed test websites) are clicked they unblock the speed. This is so that customers cannot complaint. I suggest find an alternative speed test website, which is not popular.

As for the peat time speed issues it just means that the RSP is either not managing the routing well, or they are being cheap and have more customers than the POI capacity they have paid for. It is these two issues which sets one apart RSP from another, all other things being equal.

Swap to Aussie BB Gigabit with 1 month free. At the start of October change to Superloop 100/20. Check back on OzBargain for new ISP deals in 6 months time. The majority of the time FTTP cancellation isn't done automatically. Call Mate to cancel.

Minimum total cost $69.95 per month for 6 months, then $89.95 ongoing

Yep. ISP churn every time their promotion ends is the way to go.

  • They're currently giving me 250/20 for $95 after the initial 6 month discount rate of $79.

I haven't seen the same slowdowns and I'm on FTTP.

I have however noticed some drop-outs on occasion.

  • Do another speed test with speedof.me

Had the same issue last night, on 250 but was only getting 50 during the peak time.

Typical of shitty providers they like to priorities speed test even while they are congested and everyone's actual speed is nothing like the speed test would suggest.

Spend $99 a month and get something you don't have to worry about like Aussie broadband, Launtel or Superloop.

100/20 for the first 6 months is $69.95 then $89.95 after

  • it's why they are cheaper than isps like aussiebb and superloop, you are gonna get what you pay for. sometimes you get lucky and have no issues, but they have to cut the costs from somewhere and usually it's throttling customers during peak times.

Some RSPs are cheating with the speed tests through Ookla. Try a few other speed test sites or download something big to confirm the actual speed.

  • Just churned to them also 100/20 they have atrocious peak speed. I'm going to lodge it with tio as they are misleading about typical evening speeds.

Geforce now game streaming keeps warning me about spotty internet connection so I tested on 20220213 during peak hours (8:30pm) with my Mates 100mbps download plan.

speedof.me shows 40mbps download speed while Ookla shows 100mbps download. repeated twice and the results are the same.

I also ran the test on my 4g mobile phone via cellular incase if speedof.me is doggy. But both speedof.me and Ookla shows 100mbps download.

Mates NBN is misleading their customes to believe they are getting advertised typical evening speeds. This caused me so much pain and I'll look for an alternative immediately.

    • superloop my friend, switched from mate all this time ago and its been absolutely rock solid!

  • Worst ever experience from BELONG, they disconnected my 30 NBN plan after being with them for 5 years without my knowledge and after lodging support email (can't talk to human being BTW) they asked me to re-join / re-apply at much higher price!! WTF.. To make it worse, they refusing to refund me the remaining 25days left of the already paid month. I will have no option but to lodge formal complain to the Telecommunication OMBUDSMAN. NOT HAPPY JAN.
Joined MORE at cheaper rate, higher speed, much better service with people you can call them in case you need help.

  • Want to add to this thread for awareness.

Two weeks in with Mate on 100/20 plan.. lured in by criminally cheap monthly cost.

Now I'm experiencing what others described above. During peak hours, YouTube vids won't play above 1080p, sometimes it even struggles with 1080p60 HDR streams. I noticed this right away on a 4K TV (that I'm not getting the full resolution).

Did speed test on my phone through the speedtest.net website and fast.com, all came back with flying colours. Then I installed a lesser known speed test app on my Google TV then BAM!, only getting 40-50 Mbps. Theoretically this should be enough for a 4K YouTube stream and yet it simply can't play it.

This is no different to VW's Dieselgate. Obviously Mate knows when its network is being speed tested and run them at full speed… and then back to throttling it for actual use.

The issue seems to resolve itself later in the night (after 10.30pm), presumably when traffic had died down.

This is unconscionable conduct… wonder what ACCC would say about this.

Least to say I'm switching back to Future/Superloop/Launtel/ABB. It's true, you get what you pay for. Lesson learnt!

  • I just signed up and also having similar issues to those mentioned. I' m on FTTH and been with many providers and never had issues before. I will be canceling and getting a refund.

  • I’ve been with Mate for about for about 9mths and was really happy with solid speeds and ping (fttp 100/40). But just the last few days it’s been shocking. Speed tests all over the place and unable to get barely 720p on my streaming services during the evening peak. I’ve been forced to pause and rewind numerous times to get it to buffer decent quality. Not sure if they’ve changed something with the network provisioning recently, but I’ll raise a ticket and see what they say.
I’ve noticed the same thing with the major speed tests as well, they’re solid but streaming is shocking. I found googles own speed test to be slightly more accurate.

    • If your still watching this thread - did they resolve it? Same thing happening to me now

  • This sneaky company optimize your speed for testing website and throttle everything else.
