High End TV or Projector?

I'm wondering what peoples thoughts are between high end TVs such as:

Samsung QN85A 85" ~$4500
LG C1 77" ~$4900

And a high end projector such as:
Epson EH-LS500 100-130" ~$5200

I guess the question is which would age better in the next few years? That's an expensive projector but when compared with some of these new high end TV's it's suddenly not so bad. Obviously gamers are going for the TV but what if that's not a use case or light use (this projector is actually okay for some gaming I've heard).

The reason I ask is I see a lot of people splashing out $5000-6000 on a TV and wondered if a this projector wouldn't be a better choice for some.

  • How dark is your room. You need light control for a pj unless it is incredibly bright.

  • Projector may be better for a dedicated theatre room, but a TV will be better for general use for the vast majority of cases and the vast majority of people.

  • I would rather use a TV; more versatile and you don't need for it to be in a dark room to use it.

Depends on your budget as well. Bear in mind that you need to invest another $1000-1500 (at the least) on the projector screen for ultra short throw to get the right image. End of the day projector maynot be as bright as the TV gets, and it can't match the HDR and contrast performance. However if your room can be light controlled these may not be an issue. In saying that Epson projector has very very good reviews, and can get quite bright, so it can be used in reasonably well lit rooms too as UST's have come a long way and are meant to replace TV'S and give you that bigger image that everyone wish for. If above 2 factors don't worry you (apart from gaming latency etc) and if your primary usage is watching movies\sports on big screen, projector is a winner.

Also look at new Vava chroma (triple laser projector) that's about to get released on Sep 13th at very good discounted price of $2799USD(only for pre-release subscribed customers). I've recently got the Samsung triple laser, and the Vava new version is kind of budget version of the $10k projector. Early reviews look really good product and a good upgrade from the current model (which is the best budget UST projector)

Buy a TV. Simple reason is economics, TVs are far more popular, therefore have higher levels of production and more competition which brings the price down. Projectors are niche products for particular use cases and you need to think about everything going on in the room. Where is the seating going to be, what is the ambient light like (a good projector can usually be bright enough to watch in any light these days, but it can lose colour depth as a trade off when set to the brightest setting).

I miss my projector for movie nights (I used to have one ceiling mounted so there was no clutter in front of you when watching a movie) and even playing games was amazing because it was so immersive (although this was back in PS3 days, so 720p and no HDR to worry about). The projector you list still comes with tradeoffs, it's not true 4K (it's "4K Enhancement Technology", half the pixels of real 4K), it's noisier than a TV (36db in normal mode is not silent, going to quiet mode will dim the picture), it probably won't have the depths of blacks (reviews suggest it doesn't) nor the brightness (4000 lumens is somewhere around 1,000 nits, which is just nuts for a home theatre projector. However the QN85A does closer to 2,000 max brightness) and maxes out at 4K60hz.

The only positive is size. And yes, it's a good price for a good image that big. But I'd wonder how it would compare to a 100" TCL screen. Those TVs you listed will absolutely kill it on image quality.

    • Thanks everyone, I have decided a TV will be the way to go for me after all. Thanks for helping me make up my mind on this one.

Epson EH-LS500 Is not a ‘high end’ projector imho . It’s not a native 4K projector. Native 4K projectors are usually more expensive. Eg : Sony VPL-VW290ES a native 4K projector is about $9k.
The lg c1 77 is a high end tv at a great price though!

    • Laser and lamp projectors are different segments imo. Lamps are more for home theaters and lasers are more ideal for casual use since they have near-instant start up time.

Lasers are better for TV use.

I've got a Samsung Q70R, and despite it being a really good screen (I use it for HTPC only), I'll never buy Samsung again. They had the issues with Advertising that was rolled out in an update, and now there's some issue where everytime I turn my TV on I need to stop it from detecting device, every time. They cant fix the problem to make it not happen, and theres no option. Avoiding the ads is easy, but paying for a big brand TV should have big brand functionality and solutions to the problems that fill their forums.

Both TVs and projectors lose value really quick, so I dont recommend spending that much money on a TV or Projector. If you are gaming, buy a $500 monitor. Then for watching anime, $200 projector. Save your money.

  • LG C1 77" ~$4900

Don't know where you're getting this price from

    • Probably was a typo, my bad. burning the candle at both ends these days. Home schooling and managing 2 work from home jobs, my work doesn't make me 'essential' so I get that 3rd job thrown in.
