The look of shoes is important but imo the most important thing is the sole. Looking through the pictures, that type of sole (with only a small patch of grip in the centre and on the heel) is extremely fast wearing and can get quite slippery if it rains (think sliding on the sewer drains).

It's cheap, but would suggest ozbargainers to save up and buy a better pair.

Shoe a bit difficult to buy online before try out.

      • +2

Yes my conclusion too - just too many interpretations of size, even taking in to account the AU/UK/US variation
Its OK if you already know the brand and they are consistent

Maybe if you are religious it is…

          Whiting>>>Dover Sole

    • Sole looks better than the crepe ones from last week though.
Managed to get a pair in 46 euro for pickup at my local store within 10kms.
Probably could try on in my car and return there if the fits not right.

    Exclusive to Platypus.

= We made up the RRP, don't pay any attention to it.

    • Any RRP is a pie in the sky really. Some say - as a general rule, cost of manufacture is 10% or less of the RRP.
In this case, they're still making 50% margin 😅

      • +2

Manufacturing costs are only a small part of the overall costs.

Source: used to be on the design team for a household name IT company and regularly got it drummed into us that a 10c component costs 20c to build on and adds $1 to the end price, of which at most 20% was profit (tighter margins in IT kit though).

For anyone who DOES pull the trigger here, I bought a pair of the recent ITNO Black Suede Chelsea boot (Mister boot IO think) deals that was posted on OzB. Sizing is TTS, US sneaker size (I am a US8, bought US8). At least on that boot, I am shockingly impressed by the comfort. Really nice, cushioned footbed and a comfortable wear, no squeal and plenty of grip. Obviously does not speak to this specific boot, but especially at the sale price, I doubt you'll regret the purchase.

Sydney no pick up and will have problem to return it if not fit or not good.

      • +7

I don't see how that is at all relevant to my comment, but sure.

        • Ha ha I am just talking to myself not to buy it 😆

    • +1

Thanks, that helped me decide to pull the trigger :)

  • US Size 11 gone.

  • Who is the wise guy who took the last pair of US size 11… grrr lol

  • US size 12 sold out while I was checking out :/

For $35 these will make great sh.t kicker Chelseas. If you're precious with your shoes (like I very much am) these are shoes you buy on a rainy day (literally use them when it rains) and avoid ruining the soles of your leather shoes

Can anyone recommend a quality pair of men's boots (similar style to these)?

    • R.M Williams. Not in the same price realm though.

    • Budget? Barker, Church's, Crockett and Jones, Jefferey West, Alfred Sargent, UK made Loakes. All brands I'd take any day over current day RM Williams

      • No budget, just after a quality pair that will last.

Check out those brands I’ve mentioned above. They’re not cheap but you get what you pay for. Herring shoes are a great place to get them from when they’re on sale (shipping is pricey but worth it if you get more than one pair). Side note I’ve bought many pairs of Herring’s own brand of shoe and have been pretty happy with them as well. I my experience you get more than double the value of spending $200 on a pair of men’s shoes than $100

Pretty much any English made good year welted shoe will last for an eternity if you treat them well (eg condition them regularly, use shoe trees). Italian shoes are also great but I think English are much more durable. Italians do better leather uppers, English make better soles and are built like tanks. My preference is for English

If you want a lesson in paying a lot for terribly made Italian shoes. Buy Aquila

          • @Gunnar: Thanks, I'll take a look at those brands, but liking what I'm seeing already (based off shoes from Barker).

            • @magic8ballgag: Nice!

Have a read of this article which is a basic intro on what makes good dress shoes:
              https://www.csmonitor.com/Business/Saving-Money/2015/0711/Ho…

You’ll offen see a lot of mention of Alden and Allen Edmonds. Both are good shoes and US made but I prefer UK shoes

As for shoe care when you get decent shoes, Saphir products. The products are not cheap BUT you get what you pay for. I’ve tried loads of stuff and just come back to this. This one, in the neutral colour, will do everything you need to on any colour shoe (unless you’ve really scuffed it and need to add a specific colour to the shoe):

  • Only sizes in stock are 7 and 13

  • only size 13 left :(

  • Bought a size 13. Thanks OP

  • Wish i had bigger Feet LOL

      Buy thick socks 😉

  • According to their website, 8 people bought the shoes before they ran out of stock. Mustn't have had many to begin with.

  • I bought size 13.
They look a bit narrow but I will have to wait and see.
Credit card payment wouldn’t work. Kinda sus the only payment method that worked was PayPal and that method does not allow refunds (only exchanges).

I've bought from Platypus before, I trust them. Can't say for the shoe quality itself though, I haven't heard of or bought ITNO shoes before.

      • Thanks for the info.
Turns out their check out system is a bit glitchy. I ended up with two orders.
I dealt with their online chat to fix issue and they were really helpful and good to deal with.

  • These look suspiciously close to the Shubar ones except with an extra pull tab on the front opening. Bottom sole slightly different though with that patch of grip.

  • Only pair in WA available at Karrinyup is UK10. Just call for stock check.
