"Ryan also took this opportunity to confirm that going forward, all newly released cross-generation games will be eligible for an upgrade from PS4 to PS5 for a price of $10. This applies to all upcoming cross-generation games, such as the sequel to God of War and Gran Turismo 7, published by Sony. Fans will be pleased to note that both digital and physical editions of the games will be eligible for this upgrade."

Are you sure it's free? Also not sure if this is a deal when Xbox (the main competition) is doing cross-gen upgrades for free.

    • Ok fixed to what you said. Thanks

Changed deal to just horizon, and included info only to confirm all cross platform games have upgrade path since it costs money.

when Xbox (the main competition) is doing cross-gen upgrades for free.

Just did research and Xbox patented the Smart Delivery Technology so Sony can't use it unfortunatly.

Just did research and Xbox patented the Smart Delivery Technology so Sony can't use it unfortunatly.

Endlessly repeating this pathetic excuse won’t make it come true.

Being able to make upgrades from PS4 to PS5 version of games free or paid is something that Sony could change with the press of a few buttons.

Stop trying to use Smart Delivery as an excuse for Sony being too greedy and predatory to come up with their own version of it.

      "Fans will be pleased"

lmao for what, for charging 10 bucks for what Xbox does for free?

Just like how they charge 10 bucks a month for PS+ cloud saves when Xbox does that for free too?

"Fans will be pleased" … yeah right. Sony needed another PS3 launch disaster to set their heads straight this gen.

Before there was no upgrade path for Horizon. So if a ps4 owner wanted PS5 version you paid $80. Now its free.

      • -2

Why would they want a ps5 version if they have a ps4?

        • +3

Some people have a PS4 now, but are planning to buy a PS5 in the future.

      • +1

Before there was no upgrade path for Horizon. So if a ps4 owner wanted PS5 version you paid $80. Now its free.

Not sure if you’re ignorant on this topic, or just lying.

Sony originally promised that HFW would have a free upgrade from PS4 to PS5 version as a PS5 launch title. That Sony then pushed back HFW’s actual release date doesn’t change the fact that they had originally promised it to be a free upgrade.

This isn’t a deal. This is Sony backpedaling after receiving backlash for breaking their promise.

Lol thanks Sony. I can't believe they thought it was a good idea to charge gamers full price for the ps5 version unless you brought the $250 version.

Jim "FU ps4 owners you should have upgraded already"

    • Still can't understand the $10usd upgrade or basic graphics enhancements.
    • +2

The same Jim that is holding back current gen by having titles release on the old platform also

  • +7

Extremely disappointing that Sony wants to gouge PS5 owners for PS4 games at a higher resolution and framerate. Especially considering the amazing work that Xbox is doing.

    • -7

Xbox patented their smart delivery technology. So Sony can't use Smart Delivery.

I think Xbox shouldn't patent something like this, it hurts the gaming industry and holds it back.

      • +2

Sony clearly have no interest in doing something like Smart Delivery. If they did, they wouldn't be charging $10 to upgrade to a PS5 version.

      • +5

Honey, they can copyright a name, but there's no patenting here. First off, Smart Delivery isn't anything new, really, I bought Cool Boarders for the PS1 on my PSP a decade or so back. It then carried over to my PS3 when I got one, save transferred and all. Then a couple years later the Vita dropped and it worked there too.

Don't blame the company doing something good, for another company not doing it when it's not just within their abilities, but they've done it before. Microsoft only highlights the "Smart Delivery" branding, I assume, for people who aren't too smart and don't understand what's happening…which unfortunately due to this $10 news, is likely a few people going forward.

        • -3

Smart delivery is a technology. Go to the xbox series x website. Its a tech which was patented as far as i know.

If Sony did something similar there might be legal breaches.

          • +1

@Chchnu: Wow, a technology that parses a machine ID and picks a predefined image that suits it best. How innovative!

          • +2

@Chchnu: I am sure any console mAker can program their system to provide free upgrades between generations. Call it smart delivery or common sense. Do ppl really think Sony can’tprovide free ps4 to ps5 upgrades because Microsoft already use the term smart delivery? Lol

    • -2

Not quite. PS5 has features the PS4 does not have including DualSense haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, activity cards, gameplay hints, 3D audio, game size compression and faster SSD loads etc which aren't unreasonable for a minor fee upgrade. It's not quite just higher res and framerate unlocks which are provided free e.g. GoW or HZD 60 FPS unlock.

Xbox doesn't have that generational difference in additional features, it's just a performance upgrade on better hardware so not a direct comparison.

However, not providing an upgrade path from PS4 to PS5 at all was indeed a disappointing move which they've now gone back on although should never have been suggested.

      • +5

lol, do you sing the names of sony executives as lullabys to your kids.

        • Indeed. PC has far greater flexibility and competition although prices for AAA games are also rising.

Edit: Well you edited your comment from a valid and correct observation to an unnecessary juvenile comment. Nice going.

      • +1

        PS5 and X&S owner here.

-"DualSense haptic feedback"- cool, it's got nice vibration motors, big whoop, game is still the same
-"Adaptive triggers" - as above, except A. didn't Xbox do a similar thing with Xbox One (I'm genuinely asking, I don't remember, I think only Forza bothered because NOBODY CARES), B. as above, "big whoop, game is still the same", and C. this and the first one are the same thing, a nifty controller does not a nifty console make, or else the Xbox Elite Controller would probs have something to say.
-"Activity Cards" - are just redesigned boxes with photos and a tune, same as in the PS3, PS4, and PSP even. Nothing new there, and even if there was, who stares at a game's box art for hours on end, as above, "big whoop, game is stil lthe same"
-"Gameplay hints" - Xbox also has had this for yeeeeears with regards to it's achievements, and also has more full featured integration of them, tracking, and so on, not to mention you can also do this revolutionary new thing where the trophy list is vertical and not that annoying sideways shit the PS5 has going on.
-"3D audio" don't even know what that is tbh but if it's anything like the 3D earphones my Xperia Play had in the day, cool but "big whoop, game is still the same", also would require a decent and compatible HiFi unit so this isn't really the PS5 as much as a great sound unit you have to spend additional funds on.
-"Game size compression and faster SSD loads" which are also on Xbox, and in my experience with both, are implemented MUCH better there.
-"It's not quite just higher res and framerate unlocks" well, it is at the moment actually. There's no new levels and extra features, for the moment it's all just extra polish. Everything you've listed here boils down to the following

"I like PS5 bc the new controller is cool and the UI is different"

As it currently stands, unless you are REEEEEEEAAAAALLY desperate to play the new Ratchet and Clank, there is no need to upgrade from PS4. Xbox on the other hand, has all the stuff there, shiny new remote controller, smaller game sizes and faster SSDs and whatnot, but also has Quick Resume which lets you keep a dozen or so games on pause exactly where you left them even if you rip the power cable out of the box. Is that worth a new console purchase? No, probably not. But it is also LITERALLY the ONLY major upgrade either console offers AT THE MOMENT. They both have the ABILITY to show some cool shit down the line but at the moment with cross gen stuff, the only true next gen feature anyone would actually give a shit about, is Quick Resume. And I'm here to say even that isn't necessarily worth a whole console purchase, so with that in mind, the PS5 which has significantly less going on, a massively disappointingly clunky and downright annoying UI, a controller that's battery genuinely struggles to make it through a decent game sesh, and so on

Maybe isn't worth paying 10 bucks more to play the game you already bought on.

Maybe you should just take Sony's (mod: edited) out of your mouth and realize they just wanna make $10 on people who buy a PS5 down the line and pickup preowned copies of these games which will eventually be the only real way to buy them.

Edit: I forgot, aren't those gameplay hint things locked behind the PS+ paywall too? Where Xbox's are not…and also there's support for other apps, like TrueAchievements, that can go even further into providing help and show videos and guides and whatnot.

        • -1

That's a very reductive & simplistic view of the features and you're absolutely entitled to it. I didn't neg. Others have a different subjective view and that's okay too.

I don't need to convince you of how the features come together to uplift gameplay if it doesn't work for you, that's fine. However, insulting people that have a different viewpoint to you is quite pathetic. Grow up.

        • Returnal was the best game I've played in about 5 years.

That alone is worth the price of admission for me.

          • @malich: That one was by Housemarque wasn't it? I don't remember. I love their stuff though, Dead Nation, Resogun, Stardust, etc. so I'm not surprised tbh.

        • -1

          Ps5 ssd faster than xbox.

          • +1

@Chchnu: Thank you for that insightful and informative piece of information.

All I can say is Spider-Man loads quick, so does everything on Xbox. The only thing I've really noticed any difference on is PS2/OGXB gen games, which is where I spend most of my game time anyways. Examples: Battlefront 2 - loads into a match within 3 seconds from the menu, max, on Xbox. Vice City on PS5, load time is about a minute from launching to playing, maybe a bit more.

Yes, this is likely based on emulation choices both companies made, however, that's kind of the point, you can only get as much out of an SSD for game loading as they will allow you, without proper patches and planning, you can have a pretty similar experience with a PS3 launch HDD. And so far, with things like Smart Delivery and Xbox automatically giving you the proper version of your game, Xbox has a better setup with that sort of thing.

Otherwise I haven't played a tonne of games on both consoles (funnily enough who makes a point of buying a game twice or more?) but Fortnite and Rogue Company? Both load quicker on Xbox. GTA V story mode (can't comment on online 1. bc I use my phone's hotspot for all my internetting so it's likely not the best example anyway and 2. bc (profanity) online) loads a good deal quicker on Xbox for me too.

Just as those games load quicker on Xbox, I'm sure there's several that load quicker on PlayStation too.

            • @TheDukeOfNukem: Ah ok. Game pass better than PS Plus?

              • +2

                @Chchnu: 100% yes.

EA Play + 100 or so titles including all the MS first party titles. I've been suggesting to everyone who has kids that they should seriously give the Xbox a look this generation for game pass alone.

        • -1

          "PS5 and X&S owner here."

          Press X to doubt.

"-"DualSense haptic feedback"- cool, it's got nice vibration motors, big whoop, game is still the same"

          Salty xbot damage control

"-"Adaptive triggers" - as above, except A. didn't Xbox do a similar thing with Xbox One"

Xbox had vibrating triggers, not adaptive triggers. They're nothing alike

"a nifty controller does not a nifty console make, or else the Xbox Elite Controller would probs have something to say."

The Dualsense doesn't cost an extra $250 on top of the console like the Xbox Elite controller.

"-"3D audio" don't even know what that is tbh"

          Then don't comment on it.

"but if it's anything like the 3D earphones my Xperia Play had in the day, cool but "big whoop, game is still the same", also would require a decent and compatible HiFi unit so this isn't really the PS5 as much as a great sound unit you have to spend additional funds on."

Xbot salty he has to pay for a Dolby Atmos subscription while PS5 (and even PS4 owners) get 3D audio for free.

""Game size compression and faster SSD loads" which are also on Xbox, and in my experience with both, are implemented MUCH better there."

Bullshit! Next gen games are significantly smaller and load noticeably faster on PS5 than Series X.

"-"It's not quite just higher res and framerate unlocks" well, it is at the moment actually. There's no new levels and extra features, for the moment it's all just extra polish. Everything you've listed here boils down to the following"

Higher res, frame-rate unlocks, better texture quality, ray-tracing, much faster loading, haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, 3D audio, smaller game sizes, new levels (FF7 Remake Intergrade & Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut).

"As it currently stands, unless you are REEEEEEEAAAAALLY desperate to play the new Ratchet and Clank, there is no need to upgrade from PS4"

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade, Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut, Demon's Souls, Returnal, Astro's Playroom.

"Xbox on the other hand, has all the stuff there, shiny new remote controller, smaller game sizes and faster SSDs and whatnot"

The controller is 99% identical to the xbox one controller, complete with AA batteries. Game sizes are significantly smaller on PS5 than Series X and the SSD is faster too.

"but also has Quick Resume which lets you keep a dozen or so games on pause exactly where you left them even if you rip the power cable out of the box. Is that worth a new console purchase? No, probably not"

Then why are you using it damage control for Series X?

"But it is also LITERALLY the ONLY major upgrade either console offers AT THE MOMENT"

If you don't consider higher resolutions, faster load times and higher frame-rates major upgrades then you're a moron.

"They both have the ABILITY to show some cool shit down the line but at the moment with cross gen stuff, the only true next gen feature anyone would actually give a shit about, is Quick Resume"

No! Far more people give a shit about higher frame-rates alone than quick resume.

"And I'm here to say even that isn't necessarily worth a whole console purchase"

Yet you keep bringing it up.

"the PS5 which has significantly less going on"

Better exclusives, new controller, faster SSD and VR?

"a massively disappointingly clunky and downright annoying UI"

Far better than the ugly outdated 1080p UI Series X has.

"a controller that's battery genuinely struggles to make it through a decent game sesh"

Never had my Dualsense die on me during a game. Far better battery life than the Dualshock 4 and I don't have to pay $30 for a battery pack like with xbox controllers.

"Edit: I forgot, aren't those gameplay hint things locked behind the PS+ paywall too? Where Xbox's are not"

No they are not locked behind PS+.

"and also there's support for other apps, like TrueAchievements, that can go even further into providing help and show videos and guides and whatnot."

Good thing we have this thing called………YouTube.

they promised it's free upgrade. How come this is a bargain?
If this is a deal. all ps4 free upgrade to ps5 will be bargain.

    • They promised all launch titles have free upgrade. This game isn't a launch title. The alternative is no free upgrade which is what was planned for Horizon. How is it not a deal.

      • +2

This is an announcement rather than a deal. They were seeing if they could rip off gamers off but outrage at the idea made them rescind the decision.
A bit like when Xbox was going to increase the price of Xbox Gold subscription but didn't due to backlash. Is the normal price a deal since they were planning to increase it?

        • Well it is a deal if it saves an oxbargainer from buying a ps4 and ps5 copy or they can just buy a cheaper ps4 copy with free upgrade.
I am sure many didn’t know of the deal.

Of course it was posted days ago in another thread…

      • +3

No, It was launch titles. Sony announced last year that this game will have free upgrade. see: https://www.theverge.com/2020/9/16/21440554/sony-ps5-launch-…

And then they regretted it, and put it back to pay-for-upgrade. And people were disappointed and hold out to Sony. Sony said fine, it will be free upgrade.

It supposed to be free upgrade since the very beginning, how is it can be a deal?

  • +2

Misleading original info in the OP, not a deal and just a terrible post all round.

Got rid of the ps5, waiting for series X.
When the old PS4 dies that me done with PlayStation for good.

    • +1

      Why's that?

      • +7

100+ dollaroos for ps5 titles, having to repurchase games for "next gen" upgrades, poor value ancient titles on PS+

        Vs

$10pm for gamepass, free upgrades for all supported titles since x360, smart delivery automatically downloads the best and latest version compatible with the console Sony will install PS4 and ps5 versions side by side), backwards compatibility since x360 generation.

        • +1

Don't forget the included, whether you have Gold or not, cloud saves for games on 360, Xbone, and current gen, that auto upload and download with no input needed from the user and are hella convenient.

          • +1

@TheDukeOfNukem: Yeah that is something that has always annoyed me with Sony and Nintendo forcing subs to enable cloud save.

            • +1

@reactor-au: To be fair, look I'll shit on anyone who (profanity) up, same as not touching Xbone until like 3 years down the line when backward compatibillity became a thing. With that in mind, on the PS4 they never forced you to get Plus to do backups, you always had the USB option if you wanted, but as it currently is right now on PS5, they actually do, there's no way to back your saves up to any thing other than your console's SSD, without paying for PS+ which is absolute horse shit. Nintendo is all over the shop, I don't really remember I don't play on Switch really any more, but I remember you couldn't back it up to an SD there either for a good long while I believe, eventually they let you, but yeah.

I don't really have a problem with them including cloud saves in their paid online subscriptions, as frankly there's so little value in them they need all they can get, but it's still absolutely fantastic that it's free on Xbox. I'll play on the X in my bedroom, head over to the missus' place and continue on her S, and then come home and might play something with the kiddo on the ol' Xbone SAD edition in her room, and the save will back and forth every time without me needing to do a thing, it's awesome.

              • @TheDukeOfNukem: Its even better, if you game on PC then some titles have play-anywhere as well. That is one place I feel MS is a bit unfair requiring gamepass ultimate if you want to play gamepass on PC and Xbox, I mean why does it matter where you play why have to pay more?

        • Fair enough, maybe PlayStation has become a bit arrogant after dominating the previous gen.
The Xbox Game Pass is incredible value but I'm not 100% onboard on the idea of subscribing to play games.
Maybe I'm just old school in thinking that owning a physical copy is the best but I guess the way things are going next generation will be all digital anyway

          • @FireRunner: Same thing happened going into the PS3, only problem is this time they're not copping the flack for it.

I agree. I used to be the same. But then the Switch and Game Pass two hit combo really pushed me into the digital side of things. I'm all digital now pretty well, the only disc that's been in my Series X since launch was a CD once with the kiddo. Switch the advantage of having it all with me made go digital for about 80% of my purchases, and Gold/Game Pass in the background locked me into Xbox digital stuff, but now I would never go back. I have an X in the bedroom, an S at the missus', and an Xbox One in the kiddo's room, and by buying digital I can play my games on any of them, so the fiancee gets to play the odd round of Just Cause and Maneater (not a huge gamer), the daughter's got Phogs and Roblox and whatnot from Game Pass, and I have whatever I'm currently burning through, able to play on either of their things with automatically backed up and downloaded cloud saves for everything across the board, it's fantastic.

But then I also don't buy many games these days and mostly just replay old stuff anyway.

The odd time I do buy something though, with Xbox it's got the ability to make your account swap regions, so you can jump on eBay and pick up US or Argentinian or whatever codes for piss cheap. I got Tony Hawk preordered last year when I was rocking the all digital One S and it was about 40 bucks via buying a US code, even got the preorder DLC demo thing included which was sweet.

            • @TheDukeOfNukem: Not sure why you'd want digital with Nintendo Switch. Physical is generally much cheaper than digital (in the case of big releases, indie games are cheaper on eshop) and cartridges are small, you can fit many into a carry case. Also Nintendo is the one I trust least with longevity of service

              • +1

@FireRunner: I was all about having as much on me as I could at the time. I didn't wanna lose games and I liked having it all there, yadayadayada, to be fair a LOT of my purchases were under a dollar, before I got sick of the mountain of cheap shit Switch games. But like, same goes there with the Xbox, my ex at the time had a Switch too so I'd account share it with her, so we both got copies. Plus at the time I came into about a grand worth of EB vouchers that I had nothing else to use on so that helped admittedly but still.

As for their online yeah that's fair. My 2DS and Wii U are modded out the ass with backups though so they'll live.

          • +1

Probably not warranted a bargain post on its own. Upcoming Horizon Deals can just include this in the description..

Sony have lost the plot this generation with their pricing and it's biting especially hard in Australia.

Just last year we were paying $69 on launch day for PS4 first party games like Last of Us 2 and Ghost of Tsushima now these have jumped to around $109 minimum and don't really drop as fast as they did. I'd be happy to pay $79 on launch for PS5 games but over $100 ain't happening.

It felt like Sony could do no wrong last generation, especially after Microsoft dropped the ball so hard with the Xbox One launch… I feel the momentum is swinging back the other way.

    • +1

Free cloud saves for all, 4 generations on one box via back compat, cross gen upgrades being free is the norm (obvs (profanity) Acti and 2K who would never), the GOAT Game Pass, and so on.

I'm not even being an Xbox fan boy here. These are great things for all consumers. While I wish PlayStation would pull their head in, one way or the other, competition is always good. Sony wanna keep burying their head in the sand, it's only gonna continue to force others to step up their game.

      • Agreed, I think the ecosystem Microsoft has built is way better at this point.

At some point though Microsoft has to deliver some real first party bangers to make good on it all.

There's some cool stuff on Gamepass and some good things in the pipeline it seems especially with the Bethesda purchase but I feel it's been a long time between drinks since they've had a massive Halo sized hit.

      • I don't believe 42 original xbox games and 577 360 games qualify as "4 generations on one box via back compat

      • "I'm not even being an Xbox fan boy here"

        You are though

    • I've moved exclusively to 2nd hand market for PS5.

Sonys pricing seems to be working out just fine for them, as there is no shortage of sellers. Some one's paying those dog turd prices (or we're all just reselling the same copies).

    • Yeah it's almost doubled in price, $69 for new PS4 releases to $125 for first party Sony titles. Then the Ghosts of Tsushima debacle, following this debacle and now they're saying it's a $10 upgrade.

  • -1

Absolutely no bargain here. Every copy of the game will come with this ability at no additional cost, and the game isn't even out this year. No deal.

  • -1

This post is nek level ridiculous.

  • Why is this even posted here.

  • Is this an out of season April Fools joke?

  • Well I absolutely loved Horizon Zero Dawn, didn't realise the sequel was going to be on PS4, another reason not to upgrade to PS5.

    • You will miss out on the PS5 exclusive features.

  • Sure are a lot of butthurt xbox fanboys in the comments

  • I have a PS5 and Series X - the quick resume feature on XBOX is the greatest single feature on a console ever implementent…. imo
