4K Monitor Suggestions - Budget $1000

Hi OzBargain! I'm after recommendations for a monitor but I'm swamped with all the options out there!

  • Looking exclusively for a 32" 4K as that seems to be the sweet spot unless you can convince me to go smaller/bigger?
Mostly for anime, Netflix and 4K movies
  • Casual gaming, non-FPS
  • Usual web browsing
  • Would like to get into photo editing
  • Wife will occasionally use for work documents and spreadsheets, plugging in her work laptop
  • I will be plugging in with a Gigabyte Aero 15 with RTX 2070 and also a Huawei Matebook
  • Ideally would like to spend as less as possible, around $500 but could max out to circa $1,000
  • Not in a rush, can wait for historic sales prices such as Black Friday deals, but ideally prefer not to wait nearly three months
  • Brighter the better. What's the highest HDR rating I can go within my budget?
  • Preference lean towards colour performance over gaming performance
  • Would like to just have one keyboard and mouse for my Aero, Huawei and wife's laptop. Haven't looked into which monitors have KVM built in/how much KVMs are. Would a docking station be better?

Here are some of my options below.

Dell S3221QS:
Popular amongst OzBargainers and for good reason. Specs seem decent but most importantly comes well under budget, frequently had for well under $400.

Does this monitor meet most of my requirements without too many compromises? Given I can go above this price, should I? Or am I chasing diminishing returns per dollar beyond this monitor?

Dell U3219Q:
Obviously, this would be a great monitor even though it's older and more expensive. Currently out of my price range, but have they ever gotten down to near $1,000 like during Black Friday sales? If so, I can wait and I'll jump on it most likely as an early Xmas/Birthday great to myself. I've also read that someone got one from Dell Outlet refurbished for around $800. How often do these come up, because I'd also jump on that price as it comes with a three year warranty still.

Dell U4320Q:
My friend just ordered one and reviews seem good. Is 43" too big? Does this ever come down close to $1,000? Doesn't seem like it. I'm talking to myself really.

Dell U4021QW:
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA dreaming!

LG 32BN50U:
If I'm considering this, then I should just get the Dell S3221QS, right? Or are these better?

LG 32UN880:
If I can't pick up a 32 inch Ultrasharp within my budget, then this is the monitor that I like the most. It's got great reviews for excellent colour accuracy and I love the C clamp arm that's super adjustable. I could even position it so I can watch movies in bed. $1,049 from Centre Com, could it go cheaper? Has anyone who owns this monitor comment on their owning experience please? Thanks!

I haven't had time to look up any other brands offerings such as Acer, Samsung, Viewsonic. Are they any other notable mentions that I haven't considered?

Is it possible to get the 4K 144Hz 32" gaming monitors anywhere near $1,000 during Black Friday Sales or any sales? Refurbished? Factory seconds?

What about using a 43" TV like the Sony X80J, RRP $1,195 but I'm sure I can bargain them down at TGG/JB etc.

Or any other 43" TVs? Or is that simply too big for my use?

Thanks in advance for anyone's help and advice! Sorry for the long post!

Id get the Dell UltraSharp 32 4K USB-C Monitor: U3219Q

    Or the Dell UltraSharp 43 4K USB-C Monitor: U4320Q

    • there seems to be only $20 difference between these monitors on the dell site? $1,542.00 vs $1,563.00

how is this possible? for 32" vs 43"?!?

      • I think that 43" model has been around since 2018 perhaps

        • ahh, looks like IPS panel on the 43" vs LED on the 32…

        • The U4320Q is a 2020 model, the U32q9Q is a 2019 model. All dell monitors have their year in their model name after the inch size.

I wouldn't mind either the Dell monitors but they're out of my price range of $1,000.

          • @NoApostrophePlurals:

All dell monitors have their year in their model name after the inch size

Yes, aware of that, but this one essentially hasn't changed and probably due for a new model.

  • got da Dell 32 " and shallow curve, my daily bread and butter

    • Yeah the S series curved 32" are pretty nice for the money, colours good (after a little calibration). I've always loved Ultrasharps though, hardcore photo editors would probably want flat.

      • started off with the Samsung 28" shallow curve but it is junk compared to the Dell. Yup nothing beats ultra sharp!

  • AOC?
    Samsung?

    Neither in your list…?

    • "I haven't had time to look up any other brands offerings such as Acer, Samsung, Viewsonic. Are they any other notable mentions that I haven't considered?"

What models specifically do you recommend?

LG 32UN880 is leading the race ATM.

      • Depending on stock and what you want to spend - I'd be looking at the Samsung and/or AOC.

Not a fan of LG gear in general. Thats just me.

  • W

Wife needs a new monitor for photo editing. Current monitor is an old 24inch Ultra Sharp but need to upgrade.

    • What's your budget?

From all the research over the last few days, the Dell S3221QS is hard to pass up for under $400 when on sale (seems like every month based on ozbargain search).

As I'm just a casual non FPS gamer, 60hz won't bother me. The other monitors I've looked atay have some better features but I'm finding it hard to justify as an all rounder use monitor. I was set on the LG 32UN880 but didn't make financial sense.

If I was to really spend, I would go down to a 27" monitor and buy the gigabyte M28U for $829. 4K 144hz and KVM. Hardware Unboxed did a great review of it. Check it out if you can afford it!

      • Thanks I will check it out. Budget is under $1000. I'm assuming it will be small business tax deductible!

I think I want 32 Inch 4k ips panel based on early research. She tells me the colours in lightroom on the monitor look different to what she sees on her phone when gLlery is loaded. So I'm hoping the new monitors will have a true colour profile

What phone does she have? It could also be due to the high brightness of my Samsung S20 is a crazy 1,300+ nits! Most of the budget 4K monitors only hit around 300-400 nits. If the monitor is only going to be used by your wife for photo editing and it won't be used for gaming at all, then we are looking at very different monitors. You can focus on a monitor where refresh rate is not important at all. And in taht case, you have far more options than I do. The only monitor that we we would both cross-shop would be the LG 32UN880 UltraFine Ergo. CHeck out it's colour performance reviews. If your budget is around $1,000, check out the ProArt range that are highly regarded by professionals though the 32 inch 4k options are a bit confusing.
