  • Thailand good but can't see if they available locally here

    • So neg because Thailand no good (which I disagree) or can't see locally here?

      • Maybe they don't like Jasmine rice.

  • +2

This is a better deal and I'm my opinion a better grain/rice ;)

Can't compare difference type of rice and product of Vietnam vs Thailand.

      • Of course you can.

You can like the taste experience of one more than the other.

        • +14

Jasmine and short grain completely feel difference.

      • Same same, but different

    • -3

Short grain is only good for susbi

      • +2

        That sounds sus

      • short grain is much more delicious and chewy

      • +4

short grain japanese rice is good for japanese food (not just sushi).

thai jasmine is good for thai food (excluding the foods you'd normally eat with sticky rice, etc)

you can make gyudon with jasmine or pad krapow with japanese rice if you really want, but Uncle Roger won't approve.

        • +2

Jasmine is pretty much south east asia staple. Goes along really well with singaporean/malaysian/indonesian food

    • I really like this rice

  • +3

Saw this at my local too.

Can anyone comment on the quality vs Cambodian jasmine rice from sunrice?

    • I believe Sunrice Jasmine changed to Vietnam too sadly… :(

      Happy to be corrected.

This was only $20 at Spudshed in WA a month ago. Quite good but for $24 might as well buy a 20kg pack similar Thailand jasmine rice for $40 from any oriental stores.

  • +3

Rice, rice, baby! How good is rice!

  • +1

Fyi. Costco is selling both Thailand Hom Mali Rice at $42 at 22.7kgs (regular price - 18c per 100g) AND discounted smaller $5kg Hom Mali Rice at also 18c per 100g.

I think this is the same jasmine rice currently sold at Woolies.

    • The Thai hom rice is surprisingly as good as the rice from the Asian shops, my wife gets it on special.

  • Make sure you have a good way to store it. Bugs can be a problem is not stored right.

    • +1

What's the best way to store rice?

      • Rice Dispenser. You can purchase them online.

      • Air tight moisture free. Like good Tupperware containers or similar.

        • That's a big tupperware container!
I just used those big plastic clips for 5-10kg bags but got a few recycled glass jars (2kg each), for various rice etc make it easy to dispense.
may not be technically air tight but does the trick.
F hell, $75 for that amazon thing is a lot.

      • My wife keeps hers in one of those black plastic containers with lids you buy for storage at officeworks. The large ones can hold craploads. Her "dispenser" is a cup. $211 for a dispenser…jeebus there is one born every minute

    • +3

I clean rice first using a strainer and just have a plastic clip securing the bag. Never had an issue in all these decades

  • Those are $24 in Asian grocery store all year round

    • my local 5k for 20

      • 20kg for $48 here

  • +1

This rice is quite a good brand, I bought this brand regularly and can vouch for it.
It's fragrant and has got good texture too.

For this price it's not bad, I believe some asian grocery can sell it cheaper but this price is also good.

    • Usually got them from Asian supermarket for $26 (Tong Li). Which asian grocery did you find it cheaper?

      • I think in Victoria
Hong Kong (Clayton) usually have it on special buy 2 bags of 10kg for $40

once you go brown, it's hard to keep the white down

    • Personally can't 100% brown, 30/70 brown/white now.

      • 30/70 riceberry/white here. Tastes just like white fluffy and soft

    • +8

Sorry brown rice is awful. I've tried it a few times now because of the healthier claim and it's like chewing softened sunflower seeds or bugs. The 'healthier' articles say it has a 'nutty' flavour. It didn't have a flavour lol. One of the most unappetizing foods I've eaten.

      • and it's like chewing softened sunflower seeds or bugs

Never had it like this - not sure how you cooked it.
Anyway, there are a lot of whole grain foods to eat instead of white rice, although I guess some are more expensive. Like quinoa. That is easier to mess up cooking though in my experience. Quinoa is nice when it's fluffy, not soggy heh.

        • +1

So it really/honestly doesn't feel like chewing down on a softened seed, as if you're chewing through a cockroaches wings to get to something softer inside? I tried a few different cooking times. Maybe I need to eat it when someone else cooks it who eats it all the time.

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: Sounds like you massively undercooked it - brown rice takes twice as long to cook as white rice and you also need 50% more water.

            • @Nom: Hm, ok. Thanks.

    Chinese supermarket selling $18.8 10kg

    • +1

and much better quality to nice fat chewy grains

  • +2

I think this brand is one of the best in Australia at a reasonable price now.

Normal price in Asian Grocery as high as $28 and cash only. There are discount gift cards and spend $x to get points to bring this further down.

The production date is late June 2021, so it is fresh rice, not old rice if one knows the difference.

    • Bought before not good, currently having Golden wheel, it is quite good.

I like Royal Feast. It has a very nice smell

      • but vietnam

        • what's wrong with Vietnam?

          • +1

@srr: Overall Thailand jasmine are better.

            • @superforever: Wonder why it's better? Just get whatever is on sale.

I guarantee the locals in Thailand and Vietnam eat whatever the street vendors and small restaurants are selling, and the restaurants won't be buying the top grade stuff.

  • Our local woolies regularly has Royal Feast 10KG Jasmine rice for $16 as last listed here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/640948. Seen it as recently as a week or 2 ago. Royal Feast Jasmine rice isn't great though so maybe worth paying the extra. Can't remember ever eating Golden Pheonix brand so cannot comment on the difference.

If you like more fragrance in your steam rice, try add a bit of Pandan leaf in the rice cooker when you make your rice.

Don't worry your rice wont turn green. Once cooked the rice will be very fragrant 😊

  • -3

This is more rice than I’d eat in a lifetime.

    • -1

I'm guessing you don't eat rice often
I reckon i eat 0.5-1kg (uncooked weight) of rice per week.

      • -7

Wow. Such a boring way to consume ~2 days worth of calories.

      • -6

Your downvotes are spicier than your bland diet.

        • lol didn't downvote you.

          I need my carbs!

          bland diet.

You should eat rice with something that's probably what you are doing wrong.

          (Although i just love rice)

  • +4

Try to put kfc original when you cook the rice

    • +2

👍 Taste like hainanese chicken rice, then dip with homemade ginger/spring onion sauce. Yum

I bought this brand 1.5yrs ago and I still have half to go. Use this for porridge and my porridge smells like bleach. Has anyone encounter this before? I prefer Royal Umbrella Jasmine Rice.

    Saw this news : https://www.9news.com.au/national/microplastics-detected-in-…

    • Royal Umbrella is my go to brand.

  • Indian Basmati rice has much better aroma, grain texture and taste. You should try it once and then you won't eat this one.

  • Cheers, dinner sorted for the next 3 weeks.

  • Just bought a new bag of Sunrice Jasmine for $8 / 5kg (much better $/kg).

You would have to be insane to buy this rubbish if you want real Thai rice. Just get the stuff the Thais buy from proper shops at the same price. This is junk (my wife is Thai and would not even feed this to her buffalo's)

    • +3

That must explain all the sick & dying buffalo's lol

  • we bought 2x 25kg Cambodian Jasmine Rice from a local grocer/wholesaler for $70 special (full price was ~$42ea iirc) and really like it
