Expect around 20 - 40 MB/s transfer speeds on this one (if you're lucky). One site showing the 32GB version of this very drive did a real world test of copying a 3.8GB file and it went down to an average speed of 28 MB/s

I've got the 64GB version and after an initial speed of around 40 MB/s it slows to between 20 - 25 MB/s bringing that to around a little under an hour to fill.

So picture a little over 5hrs to copy to the 512GB and 2.5hrs for the 256GB.

If you need the capacity though, reasonable enough price.. just don't be in a hurry to transfer data to/from.

    • Smaller drives tend to be slower so that's probably why the 32GB was so slow.
But yeah, looking at Amazon reviews, the 256gb model isn't much better than the 64GB, and it's extremely slow with small files.

Mine goes into the kilobytes for writes because it runs so damn hot.

Get a Samsung Ultra Fit or Lexar Jumpdrive S47.

Except for the size/form factor, these things are terrible. They get extremely hot

    • Yeah, that's why I got one (form factor). After realising the speeds quoted were hypothetical at best, I put it to use on things like RPi and other embedded PC uses.

  • What's the current OzBargain pick for USB drives?

    • +1

The hardcore oZbargainers pick would probably be a m.2 NVME SSD in an IP68 rated thunderbolt enclosure with a carabineer!

Or they'd picked up the ASUS ROG M.2 enclosure from MSY. lol.

Spewing I missed that one. That was a good deal.

Unlike the previous version, this one is completely made of plastic, so it is far less durable, and 512GB is far too much data to risk losing!
Plus, the plastic case also doesn't help to cool down the unit under heavy load.
The write speed is so incredibly frustratingly slow, that IMHO any convenience from the small size is really eliminated by the slow write speed. Better to get a physically larger drive with a more practical write speed.

    • Any suggestions?

  • I was looking at the 256gb version to put all my music on to stick in the cars USB port. I currently use a portable hard drive. Will this get too hot and die sooner rather than later?

Probably be ok as I've had my 32GB in the car for months with tunes on it too, haven't had any issues.. but that was only a $7 thumbdrive so I didn't worry so much about it dying.

      Operating Temp (0°C - 35°C)
      Storage Temp (–10°C - 70°C)

      Straight off the data sheet.

      5 year limited warranty too..
