Decent camping lantern/light

Hey guys, can you suggest me a decent camping lantern/light in price range of $40 - 60. Going camping for the first time & don't know what to choose, don't wanna run out of battery on first day. So may be good if usb c charging and option of AA/AAA batteries backup too.

IMO get a cheap headlamp first. Having your hands free is useful and if it's your first time camping you may find it's something you don't enjoy so no point wasting money. You can usually get a cheap Energiser headlamp at Colesworth for ~$20 with batteries. Grab an extra set of batteries if you think you'll be using it lot but typically most people sit around at night without lighting (you can see more by moon light than you think and there's usually a camp fire as well) and only use lights for meal prep/eating and bathroom visits and one set of batteries will likely last all night even if you have it on the whole time.

    • Yeah, I have bought a cheap headlamp from Anaconda too! Thanks for the advice!

I warn against headlamps in summer. Or you'll be eating insects.

Buy a lantern that can do yellow light. Less insects.

When preparing food, shine the light into to cooking area from afar rather than have the light in the cooking area. Result: less insect protein

I buy my camping lights from Bunnings

        • I use a headlamp that has the option to switch to red, that doesn't attract insects like a white light and it's a very common feature. Also feels more tacticool LOL.

I'm a pretty seasoned camper and the main lamps I use are these: https://www.tjmpeninsula.com/products/work-light-led-bendabl… but they seem hard to get these days. They used to be readily available at Supercheap and TJM. They are rechargeable, last for ages, have a magnet and a hook. They come with a car charger and a 240v charger. That sort of thing is the most versatile for camping. But you need a vehicle to charge it with, so probably not useful for hiking. I use them heaps around the house, shed etc too.

Something like this looks similar, but there's no indication of what chargers are included. You'd have to have a look in store. https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/toolpro-toolpro-led-rech…

I also carry a decent headlamp which takes AAA batteries. I find the Black Diamond headlamps from Anaconda are reasonable quality without the eye watering price tags of the premium brands. A decent headlamp is generally a better choice than a simple flashlight since it can be used multiple ways. One with a red light mode is also good for reading at night. I think my current one is this model https://www.anacondastores.com/camping-hiking/lighting-elect…

    • Indeed, these look handy at home too! Cheers!

      • Just had a bit of a browse and these look potentially reasonable, but a little pricey and I haven't used one. https://www.repco.com.au/en/globes-batteries-electrical/glob…

      • I haven't taken it camping yet, but I picked up one of these: COB LED Worklight Work Lamp.

Quite bright, but also dimable in small steps. It has a magnetic base as well as a built in hook. It comes with two replacable 18650 lithium batteries and can even act as a power bank in a pinch.

        • Does look pretty reasonable depending on the build quality.

A rechargeable headtorch is good for nighttime bathroom trips and keeps your hands free (Some good ones on Amazon)

As for in and around your tent, try either the Kmart one with inbuilt bug zapper for $15 or I found these Amazon ones last a long time and are very bright even on low settings

    • I saw the same one on ebay too, free delivery with ebay plus! Thanks! Have you used it before the amazon one? How is the brightness?

have a look at the blf lantern that gets posted on here. it's about $100. but its the best.

Get something cheap to start but if you enjoy camping then a decent lithium torch with USB charging like a Armytek Elf will be a great investment. I used to take a 12v fluro camping but this is so much brighter and a fraction of the size.

Are you hiking or car camping?

    • Tent camping!

      • Pretty sure he knows that that. What he/she is asking is whether you will be camping close to your car, or hiking in to a camp spot with all your gear on your back.

The difference being you obviously want a light weight lantern for the latter.

Sorry, my bad! Being a noob! So it's camping near car!

  • Try something like these:

    Nitecore LR12 or
    Nitecore LA10

    Both are nice and compact.

  • Got any cordless tools? I’ve got a couple of lantern than use drill batteries. Admittedly I’ve most used camper trailer power for quite a while, but haven’t had to charge a battery on a holiday yet.

Also take a radio and fan in summer that use the same batteries.
