Amazon Cancelling Order for Price Reasons

I ordered the Amazon Sunkist deal found here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/650092
This morning they cancelled my order.
When I got home I checked and what do you know, this item is still available for sale - albeit at double the price!
I contacted Amazon customer service and they swear that the item simply must have gone out of stock - and then magically came back into stock a few hours later!?!
They gave me a credit for the price difference, but it seems to me that their story is highly unlikely and they simply decided they didn't want to honour the lower price.
Has this happened to anyone else? What did you do about it?

It's entirely plausible. Nothing you can do, they're not obligated to sell you it at that price and entitled to refund you if they wish.

        Unlike NSW and VIC.

Supermarket shopping is ALLOWED in those states.

  • Correlation is causation, is strong.

I find this often happens with perishable items. A store will have an allocation of stock that needs to be sold quickly so they reduce the price drastically once they have sold all that particular stock they will put the price back to normal. Amazon prices always fluctuate.

    • Yep, clearing 'old stock' before it expires most likely.

  • Likely had a sale on short dated product which only had x amount and sold out

Usual xx months shelf life stuff full price.
Just my guess… thats how amazon usually rolls with drink deals like that.

(Edit… as the bloke said above, saw after posting)

  • cool

  • What did you do about it?

Get the refund and move on:)

  • The Karen is strong in this one…

  • With the amount of $$$$ involved I would have gone s8 to your state or federal political representative .

I can’t bring myself to order these things online to save a couple of $$.

I actually find it wasteful to get a delivery with all the packaging involved and delivery etc….

I do order online a lot, but not if it’s to safe so little.

  • was short dated stock. The short dated stuff was sold.

    • I think we all assumed it was short-dated, but neither the post, nor the listing, actually said so.

      • Actually, now that I think about it - this might be a big part of the problem.
        If Amazon had said:

Hey, we have a limited supply of short-dated stock of Sunkist - and are running them out heavily discounted.

        Then I would have known:
        1. That stock was limited, and
        2. That it was not interchangeable with their other stock.
In fact, they probably should have created a seperate listing for the item so as not to cause confusion.
By not making clear that the price was only available on a limited supply of non-interchangeable short-dated soft-drink I believed that it was just Sunkist - so any Sunkist bottle would do.
So, when I see the exact same listing showing the exact same product still available but at double the price, I think they have done the dirty and cancelled not because they lack stock - because they clearly don't - but because of price.
I think their lack of transparency was misleading and it wasn't even explained by the agent on the chat. So I think they caused the issue when if they'd simply explained it was a limited supply of specific stock of Sunkist, different story.
Had they done that, I would have complained they took my order and waited nearly a week to cancel - but I wouldn't have believed they cancelled because of price.

      wonder where tshow is nowadays
and like before, Amazon went out of their way to be nice to OP

They gave me a credit for the price difference,

Not that it is ever enough to please this customer

Amazon has really dropped the ball lately. I have faced really really poor service lately. My opinion of Amazon has flipped completely in 1 year.

Lol - two downvotes for a simple statement of one person's experience.
I tend to forget that Ozbargain is full of the timid and weak who don't care about unscrupulous selling practices so long as they get some cheap eneloops from time to time.

      • Agree on line one anyway, line two will get "Almost" removed LOL

  • They gave me a credit for the price difference

So you got free money? You need to post deals like this.

This happened to me yesterday as well.

We ordered a case of tonic water from "Amazon Warehouse" and they cancelled the order, the same product is on sale for double the price, also from Amazon. They didn't seem to care, it's the 2nd issue I've had from them in the past week.

Their customer service is massively slipping, they used to fix every issue, now they seem disinterested.

When you get stuff cheap == awesome.

When it doesn't work out == move on.
