Recommend me a graphics card to run a AW3821DW (144hz, ultrawide) monitor - NO GAMING

Hey all,

I am after a graphics card that can run my newly ordered AW3821DW Alienware 38 inch 144hz monitor.
I also want it to run a 4k monitor as well on the side (as in dual monitors) .

According to users on this and other forums, the card must have

For 120 or 144Hz 4K over HDMI : HDMI 2.1 ports.
If using display port : card will need to support display stream compression DSC + Display port 1.4 cables

I won't be doing any gaming.
Just want the buttery smoothness I am used to on my iPad Pro and my S21 ultra both @ 120hz I believe.
So don't want to waste money on a high end graphics card.

Could anyone recommend a graphics card which would be suitable?

I currently have a GTX 950 which I carried over from a previous computer, but it doesn't support the above HDMI or DP standards.

I think an RX 560 or GTX 1050 would do the job.

Edit: DSC is where it gets tricky. Only Turing/Ampere and Navi/Big Navi support it, so my recommendation would have to be a GTX 1650.

    • Thank you for the reply
      I am getting hella confused

A quick googling shows the RX 560 has HDMI 2.0 and Display port 1.4

The GTX 1050 supposedly has 1x DisplayPort 1.4 (ready) and 1x HDMI 2.0b

So for the GTX I could just run my 144hz 1440p via DP and run my current 60 Hz 4K using the HDMI right?

I just changed my recommendation due to the issue of DSC support. So if you went for the 560 or 1050 you wouldn't have DSC. But yeah you could run your monitors like that.

          Sorry just read your edit.

GTX 1650 looks good and within my budget

The outputs are Display port 1.4 and HDMI 2.0B and DVI-D

Do you reckon I could run the 144hz 1440p ultrawide on the display port and run my 4k 60hz on the 2.0B

            @fd9: Yeah that should work.

            • @Void: Awesome thanks so much! This was doing my head in trying to figure it out.

@fd9: Yeah it's just as simple as making sure the connectors on the card support each monitor.

@Void: Ah that makes sense. I threw my hands into the air when trying to figure out whats the go for BOTH of them together. I get it now, that simple as. Thanks for the info.

                • @Void: Thanks mate just picked up a used 1650 super for $150 bux.
                  Card works.
Not to wait for new monitor to get shipped.
                  Thanks for the help.

                  • @fd9: Wow what a bargain! Where'd you get it from?

                    • @Void: Just gumtree! (Sorry, forget to mention it was a used card).
I think I got lucky. Just so happened to enter it into gumtree and there was one posted 6 mins ago (from when I saw it) so I messaged him and drove there straight away and got it.

Thanks for saving me several hundred by not looking for a newer card :)

                      • @fd9: Yeah I know, I was just wondering if it was from like an AliExpress seller or something riskier. What a find!

                        • @Void: Pretty stoked! Card $150 plus monitor $1299!
