Mechanical Keyboard Black O-Rings 110pcs 1.5mm US$1.05 (~A$1.46), 2.5mm US$1.14 (~A$1.59) Shipped @ OJP Rubber O-Ring AliExpress

Low price on these O-Rings in packs of 110 as the same packs sell for around $6 on eBay. These rings are attached to the stems of your keycaps and will reduce the noise they make when pressed. For me I use a Cherry MX Brown keyboard in my office and the clicking sound drives my colleagues mad, so using o-rings reduces that sound. Some people may find that they feel mushy though.

The 1.5mm o-rings are suitable for low profile mechanical keycaps (e.g. Cherry Low Profile), while the 2.5mm are suitable for normal sized keycaps.

Make sure you select the colour Black as that's the cheapest. I also recommend buying 2 packs as longer keys like the spacebar require more than one o-ring.

  • I gave my brown switch kb the o-ring treatment last year and while it only dampened the sound maybe 30%, for a few bucks it was fine.

Yeah they're not going to make them instantly quiet, just reduce the noise a bit. Prior to having o-rings everyone insisted I kept my office door shut and it felt lonely 😢 Now I can have my door open!

Every mechanical 'board I've owned has received a set of O-rings so I highly rate them. TBH, I've never considered sizes before and I haven't noticed a difference between standard and low-profile stems. One thing to consider is getting a decent keycap puller, the cheap plastic O-shaped pullers will do the job, but they're prone to breaking and can become uncomfortable by the time you've pulled the 100th keycap off (especially if you have large knuckles…).

  • How long will this take to arrive in Brisbane?

    • A month probably.

    • +1

Between 1 and 9 months, yes, really.

I buy regularly through Ali Express, not a fan, nor a hater of them, they're just a shop, a means to an end.

Pre Covid delivery times were 20 days to 3 months max.
During Covid my deliveries have varied wildly from 2 months to 9 months with the bulk sitting in the 2-4 month window.
Their delivery estimates have also been completely worthless.

Not really holding it against them, ports open and close, lots of surges in logistics during covid etc… but it's not fun really.
If you buy from them keep this in mind in order to not end up disappointed.

Aliexpress is cheaper than ebay. News at 5. There's no deal here, this is the standard price.

Don't be stupid. The normal price on this AliExpress listing prior to the Trend Spotting sale was US$1.38 ex on the 1.5mm and US$1.51 ex on the 2.5mm.

5 o'clock news is fake news

    • Shipping is US$1.58 however.

  • Another thing you could do is adding something soft underneath the keyboard to reduce the reverb. Something like a deskmat or a towel.

You could also fill the chassis of the keyboard with something, like say a EVA foam or even a drawer liner, which would reduce the sound from the keyboard as well. Though doing this could result in losing warranty.

You could also try to lubricate the stabilisers, which would involve using something like a sillicone grease and basically using a brush and brushing the metal wire to basically reduce how much it rattles.

Probably a more permanent solution that is better (in that it would reduce more sound than a o-ring) is getting a switch that's got a dampener inside. It would reduce sound of hitting bottom (which o-rings do) and the switch coming up and hitting the top (which o-rings can't do).

I've basically listed things from easiest (and cheapest) to hardest (and more expensive). You could do none of it, some of it, or none of it.
