Is it just me or are they jacking their RRP's permanently
$499 RRP for a kathmandu insulated jacket is taking the piss

    • +13

Yes they are. They have a 40% off sale on for 90% of the year.

40% off Kathmandu? So the usual price then?

  • +3

Has anyone ever paid full price for Kathmandu gear? I like what they sell but 40% off RRP is what their gear should be priced at as standard.

Has anyone ever paid full price for Kathmandu gear?

      Someone from Toorak once did.

I read it in the paper…

need at least 70% off for a real bargain.

  • Cant believe they are still pushing those eye watering prices as genuine sales for the puffer jackets going into Summer shortly

  • How do their 3-in-1 rain jackets line compare to say, North Face and Patagonia? Need something for the cold germany in 2022

I'd stay well clear of Kathmandu gear; it's pretty terrible. I've used lots of different brands on some pretty big hikes and Kathmandu stuff is, quite frankly, garbage. I've pretty much replaced every bit of Kathmandu gear I've owned.

I'd stick to TNF, Patagucci, et al. My favourite brands are Northface Summit Series (note the 'Summit series' line, not the regular one - it's much better made and will pack down smaller), Mountain Hardware, RAB. Bang for buck products - Macpac.

One thing I can say is with Outdoor gear is you get what you pay for! Also with Europe if you want particular things it's often good to get what you want there

Picked up a North Face Summit series jacket for $60 in Canada (back in the old days when you could travel .. 2018). Partner got a TNF Nuptse jacket from Anaconda here for $95 (used price hipster for a price match from some other place I had never heard of).
Kathamandpoo aren't in the same postcode, let alone the same ballpark.

But kids these days got to wear them apparently….Matched with wearing the least possible below.

I've found that Macpac quality has been steadily declining for a number of years now.

      • Cheers for that. I'll look into it. Do you recommend the summit series for casual cold and snowy winter wear?

        • +1

Yep. It's actually pretty difficult to get Summit Series stuff that is non technical. The only summit series item I have which I can use both in urban and rural locations is an 800 loft down jacket that I've used all over the Himalayas and through a New York winter.

Bought it 8 years ago and love the thing because it packs really small, is very light and super warm. It wasn't cheap but when you have to travel with it and are freezing it is worth every cent. The other summit series stuff I have is very specific for hiking.

I've never owned/used one but a brand that is fantastic from what I've heard is Canada Goose (but they are pricey AF).

One thing I will say with jackets is that you get what you pay for. A jacket that looks nice, is warm and water proof won't be cheap but when you need to use it as a jacket you'll be glad you fork out on it.

40% off Kathmandu is not a sale

  • Price error

Waiting for an actual deal to be posted. Marking up and deep discounting isn't a bargain.

  • Any recommendations for single or portable camping tents?

    • +1

How small you wanna go? Check out snowys. Zempire make some small lightweight tents. Make sure you know if you want free standing or not.
Freestanding is handy but the tents can sometimes be a little heavier, all other things being equal.

    • what seasons/conditions? Not from Kathmandu but I got the Naturehike CloudUp updated version with the snow flaps, for a single entry tent it's done really well in summer and winter with strong winds and without - it's a much cheaper clone of a more expensive Name Brand, but I'm not using it on Everest so it's fine and solid (waterproof and good in NZ winter blowing a gale)

Went to the store. Their RRP is bullshit for EVERYTHING. 50% off and you're looking at comparable pricing and 80% off would be a real deal.

    • Oz Bargainer once called them Kathmandpoo
