Bargain eBooks from Google Play

140

Google have relaunched and redesigned there eBook platform it is now called Google Play and to celebrate they have a Play of the Day promo with one book each day for 25c. The books are available in Epub or PDF format or can be read in brower or through your android App. Today’s book is Cocaine Blues by Kerry Greenwood Which if you’ve been watching the ABC Tv series is the first novel of the Phryne Fisher mysteries.

Each region has a different Play of the day, I can’t get access to the US Google stores books but luckily Amazon have been price matching it so the US one today is the YA novel The Giver by Lois Lowry and is available from amazon for 25c(mobi format)

Not a play of the day but a bargain is The Drop by Michael Connelly book 15 in the Harry Bosch series, this is currently $1.85 on google play which I think is a pricing error as it is $13 on Kobo an $9.99 on amazon

Google Play also have 100 great reads under $3.99 but I do notice that most of those are a similar price at kobo

If you are a Kindler Epubs can easily be deDrmd and converted to Mobi using the free software Calibre and Tools google Apprentice Alf for more info.

Partial but I didn't see any mention of the books in the other post so I figured this deserved it's own post. It's good to see some more competition in the market and I quite like the interface very clean.

Its not just for ebooks, but for everything..
Android market is now called Google Play. (Well, atleast on my android)

    • On all Androids, as long as you recently updated the Android Market app.

Won't buy any of the books but I liked the effort you put in the description - thanks.

    • I definitely second the effort put in - I might even spend the 25c!

That's a fun book - I bought the hard copy from Zavvi for about $6 last year, but for 25c it's a steal!

I bought it again on Android just to compare the print and online editions - the pictures are too small to see on my phone and tablet, and Google Read is an AWFUL slow application which doesn't seem to support zoom, changing font or background colour. None of the map notes are readable.

For 25c this is great for a laugh, but I don't think you'll be able to actually see any of the funny drawing or pictures until a zoom function is added. There aren't many photos in this book, so it's acceptable for the price but I wouldn't want to read a full feature novel using the Google Play software until they add some basic options to the reader software. I found a website saying you can download Google Books and convert them into ePub or PDF, but it's more hassle and I'm just not in the mood today.

You don't actually have to convert them, they are already in your account if you have purchased the book. Just click on the link above to the book in a browser then on the right click on the How to read tab scroll down and the icons to download as either an Epub or PDF are right there

        • It seems to only download as a .acsm file which appears to be an Adobe Digital Editions file. I don't want to install any bloated Adobe garbage on my netbook, so it looks like I won't be purchasing any more eBooks for a while (unless they are DRM-free.)

        • Ahh of course sorry forgot that bit mine downloads as acsm but auto opens in my Sony reader software as an epub. I also have ADE installed but I prefer the sony software.

        • Thanks for your help Melmac, I ended up installing Digital Editions using a virtual machine, and was able to fairly easily sync the Idiot Abroad eBook to my Hanvon eReader. With the better reader software, it's quite easy to read the maps and see the photos. MUCH better than the standard Google Books app.
