New Synology NAS to Replace 918+

Hi All,

I've been using a Synology 918+ for a few years, it's always been flawless. Last week we had a power cut, after days with Synology support I've got a hardware issue with the network card

Anyone suggest an equivalent model in 2021? It's used as a Plex server Inc 4k and for camera surveillance.

Thanks !

  • Check out NAS Compares. They have a good breakdown of various models.

They not only have a website, but also YouTube channel too.

    Just upgrade to the DS920+.

its not really an upgrade, more like a sidegrade

      • I mean there not many other choices based on OP's requirement. Moving to the DS1520+ only adds 1 addition slot and 8GB ram.
OP is stuck in the Synology Ecosystem so other providers are out of the question.

        • How stuck is stuck?

I moved from Synology to Unraid. Plex works fine. Surveillance station isn't available but there are other options that work just as well or better imo.

It was well worth it for me. An 8 bay unraid NAS for less than the price of a 4 bay Synology.

But OP if you're stuck with Synology then get a 918 or 920. Whatever is cheaper.

@stratbargain: Stuck as in you need another Synology device to transfer the data to another OS like Unraid or FreeNAS. Maybe Xpenology could work?
The CCTV License is also a pretty expensive investment.

My 918+ recently died as well so I'm still looking for a NAS solution. At the moment I'm leaning towards the DS920+ but I also want to switch over to UnRaid. Only issue is the NAS formfactor and power consumption.

I was thinking of recreating the DS920+ chassis but design it to fit an Intel NUC inside.

            • @No Username: Yeah true I hadn't thought about the loss of data. that would be a big issue in this case.

I actually built my unraid box around the exact same specs as the DS918+ using an ASROCK J3455B-ITX which is the same CPU in the Synology 918+. So Power usage is slightly more but not that much more. 8 X 7200 RPM drives + 2 SSD drives and I'm idling around 50 watts. Which is probably only 10-15 more than the Synology was but double the drives.

I used a SILVERSTONE DS380 which is bigger than the DS918+ but not by much - and can hold 8 instead of 4 drives.

The CCTV license investment is one worth considering but I just deactivated it before selling my Synology and sold it to someone else for about 70% of the RRP.

Anyway it's not for everyone but for the price I was able to sell my DS918 I was able to upgrade to a n 8 bay NAS that can run SATA and SAS drives in a slightly larger footprint and only a very minimal power increase.

  • how about me, still using one produced in 2011 (ds 1511+)
and i have been keeping note, that my upgrade would be 918+
    maybe we can talk :)

edit. oh so your NAS is faulty now?

If you can get a replacement mainboard, here's the whole disassembly instruction laid out, otherwise would a USB to Ethernet adaptor work in the interim?

https://github.com/bb-qq/r8152 - Looks like USB Ethernet is a possibility on DSM 7.

  • 920+ if you prefer the Synology.

Always use UPS for important electronics especially NAS and PC tower.
