[eBay Plus] Backbone One iOS Mobile Gaming Gamepad Controller $159.76 Delivered @ The Gamesmen eBay

60
PHCET10

Recently bought 3 years of ultimate gamepass for XCLOUD and have developed a taste for it.
Deal here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/654519 and shoutout to @iambRad

Although I use a DS4 at home with ipad/laptop, thought it would be good to have a solution for phone based gaming (iphone 12pro) and reviews for this are quite shining.
Obviously can also be used for native IOS apps (Dead cells with touch controls just isnt the same…)

This seems to be the best price at the moment even though Gamesmen jacked their price for the sale (RRP is $179).

  • At this price point, is the argument between this and the Kishi more about which one feels more comfortable for the individual?

    • tbh ive had nothing but issues with razer keyboards and mice over the last 10 or so years so just swore off anything razer. The reviews lean towards backbone being way better but i guess how bad could the kishi be right?

  • Somewhat unrelated, but how is "XCLOUD" as a service?
In your own personal experience is there noticeable lag when playing on mobile networks?
Or do you only advise to play on wifi?

    • +1

Obviously very network dependant. With a good 4g/5g connection over xcloud I've had no additional lag compared with wifi streaming from home console to mobile.

That said, when the network is congested, it tanks quickly. It's also very game dependant. Racing or FPS are never going to be competitive but it's very passable for other stuff. I've used it a bit for Civ VI which was more responsive than playing the mobile version.

    • its still in beta so still buggy but for what it is, its quite good.
I get 90/15 from my home internet but i found telstra 5g to be more stable.

ios is still a bit buggy as it has to go through safari. windows and android have a dedicated app so performance should be better.

i played doom eternal on a windows laptop and it was very playable and looked pretty decent on a 1080p screen.

i also played 2 hours of mincraft dungeons on iphone 12 pro and was quite seamless.

I'd like to see a resume function, but at the moment if your phone locks, it refreshes page and boots you out..so that kinda sucks.

Remember to also request a free 3D printed section for it work with iPhone 13 Pro and Max, as it won’t work.

    Request it here
    https://go.playbackbone.com/e/adapter

Edit: just checked and they charge $10 to ship :(

I suppose you can still 3D print for free if you have access to a 3D printer

  • Will this work with every game? Or does each app need to be coded to work with this type of controller?

    • +2

Anything that works with a standard controller. Apple has thankfully standardised things now so games don’t have to be built for specific controllers anymore.

      • Awesome, thanks! I'll have to investigate a controller. Any recommendations? Is this one posted here, a decent one to get?

  • What benefit does something like this have over getting say an 8bitdo phone clip and using an existing Xbox or PS4/5 Controller? $24 vs $160

    • +2

Convenience, and also the Backbone app is awesome as it integrates with iOS games, Gamepass and more.

      • +2

this. And i always felt a clip and controller felt a bit janky wrt ergonomics - though the price is right.

$24 also assumes you already have a controller i guess.

    • To be fair, it's $24 + $75 for the controller. So really close to $100, and you get to use a cheapo plastic clip that is poorly weighted to the top.

      • To be fair, it's $24 + $75 for the controller

Not really if you already had the xbox/ps controller already. Which I do. So for someone like me. It's $130 more.

        • Yea, so all you get is a switch like experience over having a phone sitting on top of your controller. Comfort and ergonomics are improved. Xbox controller is better quality, but only barely, and the backbone app is really good

  • I have an iPhone XS Max with the official Apple leather case. Does anyone know if this controller will accommodate the leather case? Or does it need to be taken off in order to insert phone into controller?

    • +1

U need to take it off

      • Right, thanks! :) I'm seriously thinking about getting one. Just need to consider if it's worth $160!

        • I value my entertainment at $10 an hour (relatively low and arbitrary benchmark) if I’m engaged and entertained for 16 hours minimum, I’d say yes. It’s worth it.

          Consider:

*it can also be used for phone games like COD and dead cells

*if you have Xbox game pass you get more value out of it having an on the go options

*resell I would imagine would be quite ok considering it’s one of two only official backed products for use with iPhone and Xcloud program. Like yes there will probably be Chinese clones in a few months but there’s no way they will be as sturdy

*consider will taking on and off the phone case annoy you.

          • @Jimothy Wongingtons: lol! Love how you calculate out your entertainment value! I think removing the case would annoy me so would add a 50% premium to the calculation. So would need at least 32 hours of usage to make it worth it, which would take some time considering my average mobile gameplay is 10 mins at a time (due to kids, pets, work, etc…). :)

            • +1

@m00seTheC0wSnake: if it was just 10 min at a time i probably would say not worth… prob easier to get a little phone stand and an xbox controller maybe. 10 min will be up before any real fatigue sets in.

$160 for a iPhone only controller? Hell no.

Not even Bluetooth, so you have to connect it via lightning. Annoying if you have a case on your phone.

Might as well get a Series controller or a DualSense for $78-$89 and a mobile holder clip for ~$18. Infinitely more compatible. Xbox, PC, PS, Android, iOS, iPad OS.

    • +1

      Yah deals not for everyone.

      Two different beasts.

    • +1

Those clips are terrible in my experience. Also have to keep the controller charged separately. Overall the backbone is a far better experience by a long shot, but not as cost effective or as versatile

    • Any suggestions on a sturdy mobile phone holder clip for dual sense?

        • Thanks!!

          • @aibargain: Just got a clip for my Switch and Switch Pro controller. The trick is to balance the weight over the controller, so that part of the controller is blocked from view.

It's fantastic and a Switch is way heavier than any smartphone.

        • Just FYI, that one is terrible. I got for $5 from Harvey sale a while back for DS4 controller. Very cheap plastic, clip isn't that secure, and the hinge loosens over a few months of use to the point it's unusable.
