Any Good Anti-Virus Deal Currently?

So far, these two came up on my search list. Not sure why ESET has garnered more likes than BitDefender when yes, BitDefender is shy of CPU, memory usage - it is for free.

Also wanna ask, I see a lot of anti-virus apps sold on eBay at a much discounted price than its RRP. Are they legitimate?

  • This seller has good feedback. Eset is good internet security. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/265305571084

    • How are these Ebay dealers selling them at a low price? How are they profiting and isn't the company running at a lost? Or are these licences cracked?

      • +1

They are activated online by the Anti-virus company, so cannot be cracked. These lincenses are probably from developing countries where they are cheap and/or given out on promotional sales but they didnt sell it enough and the rest are being sold here etc. They are all valid licenses. This question I had personally asked bitdefender.

        • The seller doesn't mention how whether all keys need to be activated within 30 days or can be kept until needed..?

          • @PeeDee: I usually buy and use/stack before the ebay moneyback guarantee period expires. If something not work, I can always ask ebay for a refund.

I use bitdefender and I like it. Have been using it on all my computers from years.

Microsoft defender and don't click on links offering free iPhones or hot singles in your area

    • Lol I downloaded an 'open sourced' media player and got a malware.

No matter how smart you are, everyone is vulnerable to attacks. A cliche phrase often repeated.

    • ALSO the files we need to download from our TAFE teacher HAVE VIRUS LOL.Dunno what this guys been up to!

  • My go to is Kaspersky and yeah, most of them work for the full year, even if they may not be the 100% legitimate license that has your name and business instead of some bloke in Shenzhen

    • I've used Kaspersky before, and it slowed down my computer too much with the active protection and things like that. YMMV I guess, that was the case with two of my devices tho (1 PC and 1 laptop).

      • Thats interesting, I used to use Kaspersky because when I was gaming using full screen windowed mode, every other software, MCafee, Norton, Bitdefender, Trend Micro etc.. would absolutely cripple my machine. Kaspersky was the only one that didn't, but that was a while ago now, I remember talking to the customer support teams of a couple of them and their advice was - don't game in full screen windowed mode, which when using 2 or more screens is just stupid advice

Linux is free, much harder to get viruses

    • Virus will make your computer not work as intended. Linux does it by default (except for production code deployment). I have a colleague who insists on using linux for development when we all use macs. I just cant justify his struggle. Drivers suck, mic does not work properly during meetings, hard to set fan profiles and what not.

That's the biggest load of garbage I've ever seen. Every computer I've ever used Linux with had better drivers and battery life than Windoze.

        • Lol, he has a metabox and none of the utilities that came with it works on linux because they were for windows. 2 Linux users (1 quit the company) and another guy still struggling. Thats enough proof for me to know that Linux is not for everyone. I tried migrating to linux in 2015 and gave up after i faced issues. Basically in my case, just unplugging the external monitor used to crash linux irrecoverably. That was good enough for me to not try it till today. I have no reasons to use Linux when I have windows and mac. Using linux is like trying to fight a war with my bare hands. There is no reason for me to do that.

          • @John Doh: Aha. Metabox has a pretty low market share while ThinkPads are more popular and probably have more support.

      • What issues does he have that affect his development performance?

I presume you have a Linux prod environment if developers are using Linux and MacOS and not windows? If so, wouldn't it be better to use the same Env in Dev as prod, especially if you're using things like Docker and bash scripts etc?

        • It does not affect his development performance, i never said that. But drivers sux. Basically drivers are the basic software and that should not $uck.

      • +1

Yeah it probably sucks on a laptop. It doesn't work very well on my Surface Pro 4. Funny how a device designed specifically to run Windows doesn't handle Linux very well. And funny how an Apple device with Apple software designed specifically for it has all the drivers working.

On the other hand, my wife and I have both been running various flavours of Linux on our desktop computers for many years. Far fewer troubles than Windows. It's a much better operating system even for home use, and for programming it's a no-brainer.

  • The eset offer that is in the Deals pages, just search for it. 👍

      read my post! :)

        aaahhh - i did…
        Get eset… 👍
Maybe you need to re-read your own post?

        • I did. just wanna clarify. I provided the link to the eset deal in my post so I don't need to search for it? I'm aware of the eset offer.

  • Pfizer is free !

(been with Bitdefender and I am happy with it)

    • It does make your comp slow however and takes quite a long time to scan!

      • It did not make any of my computer slow. Not a bit.

I bought Eset from Harris Technology. They're a legit company.

  • I was sure this was going to be another covid related thread :)

    • OH! My god now I get it! I'm so slow didnt get why ppl are commenting about COVID, I see the puns

  • the cheap ones on ebay and other sites are likely OEM version which are significantly cheaper than full retail. I used to work at a large computer retailer and if we sold OEM they cost like $5-10, but if we sold a retail off the shelf one it cost like $70 - despite being exactly the same product and both having the same retail of $109.95.

*Edit - just to clarify that OEM are designed to be sold bundled with a new computer, they should not be sold by themselves because the companies figure that when you have 1 installed, you will likely just renew instead of changing to a different anti-virus

    • So are you saying these can't be renewed with the remaining keys you have? Is there a way somehow if so? I was thinking of holding onto the two keys and use them when my existing almost expires.

      • +1

No, I'm saying if they are OEM keys, they are exactly the same that's why they are cheaper, the companies shouldn't be selling them if not attached to a PC build, but that is not your problem they can be used exactly as a normal one can be.

        • Ah I see thanks!

Windows Defender - it is free, built-in and works well

  • I use Linux - Clamav I think is the antivirus. I also use Netgear Armor (must have a Netgear device compatible eg. Wireless router or mesh) which also scans everything incoming on your network, plus you can install apps from Netgear Armor (which I think is bitdefender) for viruses. I think it's about $90 a year but it keeps my network secure - by blocking spam, malicious sites etc… (but I don't see a problem surfing the web, auto blocks)

  • i got a link on here a few years ago when looking for an Anti virus product and have been using them ever since I use Kaspersky haven’t had any problems on various pc’s and laptops, the company are great in my opinion You download from the link they send you and put in the key they send you all really easy.

  • I just buy a Norton 5 device each year from ebay.com.au.

They have always been legit and work well for my devices.

The current price looks around $38, very cheap insurance for 5 devices, we run it on the laptops and the telephones so less than $8 each for a premium protection.

    Example here https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/294320057122?hash=item4486d7ab22…

Upgrades always seem to work as well.

  • Microsoft defender. Works best without the need to constantly pop up and remind you that it’s there. Uses less resources and comes built in for free.
