    $80 cake? Is that normal?

It's their art. If they can't price something properly, they might just end up closing "due to COVID".

Cakes can vary from $5 to $500+, I have seen cakes that are $1000+.

There are multiple factors that can determine a cake's price, some of these factors can be: ingredients, overheads, time, design, decorations, experience, skill, online ads and the list continues.

Each baker presents unique cakes and I like to think I present unique mousse cakes to Sydney siders that are different from the norm.

I am a sole baker, I run my business solely and I try keep my price fair and competitive. Unfortunately, at this moment, I can not compete with larger companies such as Woolworths, Cheesecake Shop, Looma, Bread Top etc.

But I will say searching for independent bakers will price their cakes accordingly and assure you they are not ripping anyone off.

Pricing is fair for sure - a lot of time goes into baking cakes such as these.

If only you could get them to Perth 😁

        • +6

It sure does! I like to be transparent, it takes me roughly 1.5 hours - 2.5 hours of physical work to make these cakes. This is purely on making, spraying, decorating and anything related to the physical cake itself.

If I paid myself $20 per hour and incorporated that in the final price, that's $30 - $50 just in making the cake alone. This does not include my online ads fees, ingredients, overheads (space rent, electricity, gas, water, tools, packaging) business-related activities (social media managing, inventory management, website upkeep, graphic design), machinery upkeep costs, fuel, business insurance (car, home and contents), car maintenance, website related costs/bills.

I am not making that much profit per cake.

Though, I hope one day I'll expand to Perth and you get to try it! :)

  • Damn I want a cake but I live in Canberra lol

I would send it by mail, but Australia post is backed up :( haha

Very expensive cake, oz bargains is the name says it all. This is not ozbargain

    • +1

One of the most upvoted deals of all time was a Tesla - very expensive car - didn't mean that the deal wasn't still a ozbargain.

  • not ozbargain

You cannot compare a cake to a car.
Same as you cannot compare a mask to a table.
At this price, I expect to be preservatives free, check the ingredients.
You would not want to eat it.

I was bought the Onyx cake for my birthday.

It was delicious and to be honest I would buy it again. I found it more unique and actually tastier than cakes like Black Star which I actually find to not have much substance and don't enjoy all that much (though they also look good). But that's personal preference.

I appreciate that he is at least having a go at trying to make something out of an activity he likes doing so we were happy to support.

Thank you for your support! :)

I hope I do see you again! Onyx is one of my favourite cakes! I get a little bit sad when I make one because I can't have a slice haha.

Black Star is one of the brands that I researched and stalked before I started Onyx Hive :). Their watermelon cake is amazing!

    • Hello!

I can only speculate I should hire a food photographer? I agree and somewhat disagree :). I did reach out to food photographers when I initially released my first 4 cakes, though, quotes were in the thousands which was an unexpected cost that I couldn't invest at the time. I vaguely knew it was going to cost a pretty penny, but I also was keen on learning a new skill before reaching out to photographers.

Somewhat disagree: I decided to take it on myself, I am still new at photography and I would like to take on this challenge. I have taken courses to improve my craft as I would love to improve my photography skills. As I add new products and take photos for social media, I want and need to be confident in this skill, not only to improve in that area but take on a new skill instead of relying on someone all the time.

Thank you for the suggestion :)

  • I like that you mention your certifications (here and on your website). So many of these home bakery businesses fail to do this, which puts me off. Good luck with your business :)
