Next Gen Consoles - This Is Getting Ridiculous

So this November will mark 1 year since the release of the Xbox Serie X and The PS5 and there still ISNT any in stock for longer then a few minutes.

I know there is a semi-conductor shortage but this is beyond insane! anyone have any idea when there will be some reasonable supply level coming to Australian retail?

I am at the point where next Xbox Series S Ozbargin post (ie well under 499) im going to buy one - and i have ALWAYS been a PlayStation man! (since PS1)

    Indeed a joke.
Target confirmed then cancelled my order the other week, then did 3 drops following.
So many of them go to bots, why not do one big one?

  • You need a poll ;)

    I vote for next Easter.

wow, can't believe it been almost a year. If there was such a chip shortage, why bother releasing a console no one can buy?

    • +2

Not sure if serious. Over 11 million PS5 consoles have been sold. It outsold the PS4 launch every quarter so far.

Software sales have also broken records at each Sony financial reporting so clearly getting used.

OP: Stock should stabilise mid to end 2022.

We'll have another stock issue for PSVR2 "Holiday 2022".

those numbers are being inflated by scalerps

        it mentions that :

        PS4 - 37,313 / day (10M in 268 days - Source)
        PS5 - 40,322 / day (10M in 248 days - Source)

acorrding to stats floating around : if there only PS5 had 8.6 million monthly active users, 1.4m are being scalper out.

therefore the actually sales it closer to 8.6M in 248days rather than 10M. Given that there's over 100M PSN users around, are they going to meet the demand before the next gen comes out?

I mean if there literally no consoles to sell in the next 12 months those quaters numbers are going to be meaningless. It could end up being a dead console, Dreamcast 8.6M unit . WiiU 13.6 units?

        • Sony says that PS5 had 8.6 million monthly active users in March 2021, vs 7.1 million for PS4.

It's been 7 months since that stat and doesn't account for offline players as well. There's certainly some element of scalping but not that high.

Stock is being released globally continuously as well so "dead console" is a laughable comment. It'll only ramp up next year, though still likely be in short overall supply, but they've confirmed they have enough components to hit 22.6 million sales by March 2022.

  • Got mine through Vodafone, paying it off monthly to spread the hit.. it's well worth the wait lol

    • Did you have to have 2 services active with Vodafone? Or just a mobile service?

      • 2 phones with a family member

        • I'd consider Porting over to them if I have to - is there a waiting period of any sort?

          • @BLAIL: Nope, just delivery, some people have signed up and then just cancelled the month to month plan.. but do your research, they might have closed this loophole of sorts

            • @Bafranz: looks like it still needs to be 2 services - no go for me - 2 chat reps confirmed

  • Stock shortage is likely to continue until 2022, at least for Xbox… https://gamingintel.com/xbox-series-x-stock-shortage-continu…

Thanks for this - i dont want to support the 'scalpers' but i am getting to the point where it might be my only choice.

      • +3

        Why - whats the rush?

Christmas Break coming got a bit of time to game…

@Trying2SaveABuck: Keep in mind that there's actually very few PS5 exclusive games currently. If you stick to games that have free upgrades (or buy editions that include the upgrades) in the mean time, you can still play almost everything on PS4.

And as others have mentioned, the best deal in gaming right now is actually GamePass Ultimate. On 1 Oct they even launched cloud streaming for the library, so you can play any game in GamePass that has cloud enabled just through a browser. Or if you have an Android TV, you can even play directly on there.

I also used to be a massive Sony fan, but I've been totally converted by Xbox thanks to GamePass. I also have a PC, so I am able to easily bounce between the same game on Series X, PC, and Cloud (lunch breaks at work) without any loss of progress. Cross saves + cross play + cloud play + licenses on all platforms for one monthly fee? Pretty incredible. Plus the fact that they now own a glut of really good studios to create games that will be available day 1 on the platform? It really is the Netflix of gaming.

  • telstra - get the series and gamepass bundle. unlimited value considering sht market.

or just get a seres s from facebook - have seen plenty from $250 - 350.

  • +1

You missed the memo about covid? Every one staying home and playing games, lockdown and chip shortage etc?

  • To think I got my Xbox within 3 weeks from Telstra. It’s also not bee played for over 2 months.

    • No games?

      • +2

@Trying2SaveABuck - To be honest, I don’t have much free time at the moment.

  • I picked up a XSS on eBay for $350.

I’m on both sides. I have both. But I’m an Xbox man.
IMO the XSS isn’t worth more than $400 tops.

By the time you get the XSS for $499 + $349 1TB expansion card. Your in XSX territory.

    If your savvy.
Pick up a 2nd hand Xbox series S for around $350.
You can find them for that price range. Took me about 3 weeks of making offers to get one.

Then I went into my local JB hifi. Said do me a better price on a 1TB expansion card. $270.

    That’s worth it.
Not flexing. But I have a XSX and I use my XSS in my spare room.
I love my series S. Believe the hype. It’s a top little machine. So happy with it.

  • Wait for next gen ps6

  • Got mine in May. I had EB, JB, BigW, Target and Amazon bookmarked on my phone and checked them all each time i was near my phone. One day at 5.30pm i saw stock online with BigW. I've never put an order through as quickly in my life, and was waiting for a cancellation email for the 2 weeks it took to arrive on my doorstep.

It is a very sorry state of affairs.

  • In WA they're starting to pop up on gumtree/marketplace for $50-$100 less than RRP.

    • Are they legit posts though? Or are they just scam posts?

      • Legit posts.
I guess supply and demand in the second hand market is starting to catch up

  • +4

Follow Mo@PS5Stockcomau on Twitter. The account tweets as soon as stock becomes available at a retailer. Act quick and you can secure a next gen console. Its how I got mine from Amazon.

    • +2

This. You can get them if you try hard enough. You can also use Discord.

    • +1

Same. Got mine from EBGames using this. A few failed attempts timed out but it only took me about 2 weeks of trying overall.

    • +1

      Or @AustraliaPs5

    • Did this as well and was successful. Very worthwhile and has a high success rate.

  • just buy an old console and play some old games, it's not like there are a lot of great games coming out soon. There are going to be GPU, Xbox and PS shortages for the next year or two, you are picking the worst time to upgrade, even if you can manage to snag one you will probably be overpaying a lot for it.

    • +1

      But I don’t wanna!

  • +2

The problem is drip feeding. Bots are always ready to pick up that 10-20 unit drop here and there. But if Sony hold out 3 months and release 5,000 units at once, everyone will have a chance.

    • Hadnt thought about this before, but its probably the best suggestion… dont drip feed.

But then again MS and Sony dont give a shit who gets them as long as they get their $$$$

    • Why would they hold out? They want to give consoles to people so that people can start spending money on software.

  • Time to join the PC master race :D

    • Have you seen PC prices right now?

      • Heh, yeah, I just bought an RTX 3080 so I'm all too aware…

  • -3

It's really not hard. I'm on my second PS5 with minimal effort of monitoring websites that will eventually restock.

Anyone who hasn't already got one or a preorder in has either not made effort to read the many tips on OzBargain or just simply doesn't want one enough.

  • +1

… someone made a thread about preordering a ps5 easily from JB and their friend got one as well in a week. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/652093 Think Sony have used the "Supreme model" to create artificial hype. The first experiment with this was the nes and snes console re-releases. Apparently, the manufacturers were behind the inflated second hand market. Probably also making up for the days when they were losing money on each console.

  • +2

Its the best ploy gaming componies have come up with in the last 15 years. You don't need to have sales if you control the supply and sell at or over rrp until the next iteration comes out.

  • There's no games anyway. I had my PS5 since launch and It hasn't been turned on for about 3 months.

    • Sell it to the OP for a modest profit, $751. Remember the second hand market is a cash only economy!

    • Have you not played any games in 3 months or is your PS5 only for Sony exclusives?

      • Yeah pretty much for exclusives. Dark souls remake, Spiderman and Returnal. Nothing else really until 2022.

Every other game worth playing I get on PC.

  • -1

there are shortages of just about everything, especialy electronics.

Sh*t we're hearing that car manufactures are cutting back on some gadgetry simly because of chip shortage, then there's huge backlogs and delays with deliveries.

OZ post is moaning they can't clear covid lockdown backlogs , so I wouldn't hold out much hope for a quick solution. While entertainment is important, playing console or PC games isn't a must have or you'll die type thing, it will still be there in a few years, take up another pastime maybe?

  • I don't know why, I just get the general impression that PS5's are easier to get than Series X's at the moment.

I voted Just After the New Year.

The best resource out there is the PS5 stock website (seems to be easier to see in Desktop mode on a phone AND also does Series X too in the ≡ menu top right) link :-

    https://ps5stock.com.au/

Also maybe, just maybe X cloud will be able to allow slightly potato laptops to stream games with the server doing all the grunt work - this might take some time - they say they can stream from next gen to last gen Xbox but I don't think it's been implemented yet.

EDIT ↑ That's the PC/MAC link version as it says scroll down to the link to go to Mobile/Tablet version which is :-

    https://ps5stock.com.au/mobile/

The Gamesmen security for D.O.S. seems to be wrecking the site for both PS & XB - Also Target says for XB -

    PRE-ORDER HAS SOLD OUT

We will update our next stock availability after November 10, 2020

^ Hope that year is Just a mistake or they haven't updated info since well before then.

  • +1

I went into my local JB Hifi in January and wrote my name down on their pre-order list for a PS5

They called me in April and said I could come in and pick from Disc or Digital edition

I wasn't in a mad hurry, and I've only played about 15 hours since then, so worked out fine for me.

You could try the above method and maybe get lucky for your PS5?

Might be better than never making someone's stock list in time :(
