Breville BOV850BSS The Smart Oven Pro $329 Delivered @ David Jones

220

This seems to be on sale and the cheapest unless someone else can find a cheaper price. RRP is $449

Not sure why it's a SMART OVEN when you can't connect to it via Bluetooth or WiFi but it must be smart in some way? Maybe it's the digital panel?

Anyone has any experience with these and is it worth the price?

I got one from Amazon in July for $299. It's a strong recommend if you need an oven and don't have much space. Can't get a crockpot in there, but I've roasted chooks, baked loads of bread and it's replaced my toaster.

    • Can this be used as Air fryer as well or not.

      • There's a model up with an actual air-fry setting, I've never noticed the lack of it on this though

  • +1

It's considered smart because of all the different settings. Have being using this and previous model for the last 10 years. Does everything a normal oven does but a lot cheaper to run compared to large kitchen oven. It heats up very quickly and gets to 230c in approx 5 mins.
Size is its limitation and great for a couple but one would not be doing a family Christmas dinner in there.

"one would not be doing a family Christmas dinner in there"

How would you fit a dinner table in there anyway

      • Exactly my point :-)

  • Got this one for $75 a few months ago: https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B081FG5WVB/ref=ppx_od_d…

At the current price, still a lot cheaper than the Breville. Works quite well.

    • Wow that looks nice.

Quick question, is the air fry function of this one the same as those fancy Phillips XXL air fryers that are all the rage nowadays?

Also is an air fryer just a convection oven? If so, why have people suddenly gone so crazy about them

      • +1

I have the highest end breville and can tell you it's not the same as the Philips. It cooks less and takes much longer but concept is similar. The cooking is also a bit uneven on the breville.

  • used both the air fryer & this version
i loved the air fryer version.. uses it on daily basis..
i just love the ability to cook small thing without the need to heat up a full blown oven…

    • In what way is the air fryer version better than the regular one?

      • +1

1 extra fan n mesh basket
air frying is basically fan forced cooking

        • Cool. Thanks.

    • which air fryer?

  • I use this far far more than our built in oven. Convenient, super easy to use. Think I got mine for $230 around 4 years ago. Inflation…

  • Holding out for a breville Combi Wave™ 3 in 1

  • I have had a couple of these and love them. Got last one 2 years back for $200 a real bargain. Holding off for the expected iot model that connects to internet and uses recipes and technology from brevilles recent acquisition of a company.. all new products are planned to have this and be smarter… happy to wait a year or two

    • But it’s an oven, and you can get recipes from a book or using your device of choice for free.

  • I have an earlier model of this. Has elements top and bottom and modes that use both or either. Does steam (I've never used that except to help with cleaning). It works great. I hardly ever use my stoves oven.

If you truly want a smart oven I'd really recommend the Anova Precision Oven. Has been an absolute game changer. I'd use mine daily (or several times each day). Both air fryers have been put into the garage and the main oven is now just storing my pans.

As a "Smart oven" you can control it from your phone and create recipes such as "cook at 70c with steam 100% until probe is 40c then change temperature to 53c" (which btw is their faster version of sous vide).

But a lot bigger (about 3/4 size of a full size oven), and a lot more expensive than the Breville "Smart" oven at $900 delivered.

  • Had issues with the fan in 2 of these units and they don't carry parts.
    Won't be buying again.
