Can anyone comment on the taste of the JS? Been drinking the Heineken zero and its not bad but some of the others taste awful (ie, Carlton zero…)

    • I don't like it. It tastes really bad I couldn't finish a bottle. But thats personal preference.

    • +2

They are ok. Nothing special. Drinkable.

Woollies had an IPA, I think its $20 for a six pack. But my goodness. Well worth it. Athletic brewing I think it is.

        • +1

Believe me, Nort is the best.

          • +1

@Dark Zeus: Haven't tried Nort, but for me Holsten is the best. I can only seem to get it at Dan's though.

Looks like I can get Nort at Dan's too so next time I'll try some. Thanks for the tip.

            • +1

@Ramrunner: check out craftzero - I'm hooked on the Bridge Road Brewers Free Time Pale Ale

            • +1

@Ramrunner: Sometimes Aldi stock it as well as IGAs. Saw it at Aldi this week.

    • +2

I highly recommend Nort, its become my go to weeknight beer, tastes as good or better than regular beer with no weird aftertaste

    • +2

I’m a fan of the Heineken 0.0, have been drinking that a bit lately. It won some taste awards too.

      • +2

        yep, thats my preferred too

    • +2

Taste is very subjective. I find the James Squire pretty average. But I think the Heineken 0.0 is terrible.

Agree with StoneHat, above. The Nort is excellent.

My go-to is the Coopers Ultra Light Birell. Not quite as good as the Nort, but beats everything else. And always $8 to $9 for a six pack at Coles/Woolworths. Great value!

    • +2

I've tried this and few others, but my go to is paulaner 0.0(Aldi). The other is schlossgold from woolworths.

    • +2

Nort is the best by a big margin, bitter and hoppy tasting in an Ale style

      Then heineken/JS 0

      Then great northern zero…ugh

      Carlton zero yuck

I find all the lager styles too sweet and malty in after taste.

    • +4

Heaps Normal Quiet XPA is one of my faves, you can barely tell it's zero alcohol (other than the lack of headache next day!).

      • +4

Agreed. It's by far the best zero alcohol beer. Just a shame it's so expensive

    • Haven't tried the JS Zero but quite a surprisingly decent 0% is corona cero with the caveat it doesn't really taste like beer lol

I don't know how to describe it but it's refreshing and certainly drinkable unlike some others (Carlton, Great Northern looking at you)

    • Just had my first one.

My first impression was it tasted like a beer that had been boiled, all flavours mono tone, and then gas put back in it. Kind of like long life fruit juice, all the vibrance is gone. If you have made homebrew, it's similar to the taste of a young beer going through primary fermentation. All the notes and complexity just arent there..
I thought it was flat, but could see plenty of bubbles. So somehow it has gas, but tastes flat.

I mean it's drinkable, but you would only drink it if you are having a red hot look at yourself and realise you have been drinking too much lately, and this makes your conscience feel better.

Probably should call it …James Squire "I'm not an alcoholic" mid week beer.

Tinnies ultra low alcohol Hoppy Ale also has this monotone undertone, but covers it with a tasty familiar hop megabomb.

My preference of these I have tried from best to worst.

Heineken 0, Tinnies Hoppy Ale, Holsten, James Squire (maybe), Uberbrau, Bitburger, Coopers light Birell/ Carlton Zero.

      • Good review.

I drank one (JS Zero) and thought, when this isn't giving me the satisfaction that I was after.

Tried to fool the body with a 0% beer and it wasn't having any of it.

        Dammit, 11 bottles to go…

  • +33

Sweet. I'm going to get so sober tonight.

    • You’re going to have such a headache in the morning!

And waking up through the night feeling dehydrated and squirmy.

My wonder with these is, do they give you the same beer gut? They have carbs and energy just like regular beer, but sure how much less, if any.

      • Check these out

        https://www.sportsbeer.com.au/

Super low carb and they taste really good

There's also a ZERO carb beer by Burleigh brewing

        https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_326253/burleigh-bre…

Doesn't taste as good, but still pretty decent considering there's no carbs at all. Only downside to both is cost, but I buy craft beer so I'm used to it

      • Generally the higher the ABV, the higher the calories
For example comparing the Bridge Road Free Time Pale <0.5% against James Squire 150 Lashes 4.1%
        Protein 1.8g vs 1.7g
        Fats 0.7g vs 0.7g
        Carbs 13.5g vs 9.0g
        Sugars 8.2g vs 0.3g
        Sodium 7.5mg vs 10mg
        Calories 78 vs 126

So 60% more calories in a James Squires yet more carbs and sugars in a Free Time purely because of the alcohol increase

  • +1

    you can get Furphies also.

    • Showing as unavailable for NSW..

  • +1

Looks like you can order more than one, just placed an order for 2 each of JS and XXXX, and both BOGOF

  • I just ordered multiple times on the one account, so I'll try one (well two) of each

  • +7

Not that great a special imo. 6-pack pricing is for suckers

    • +1

Good deal when it is 2 for 1 - retail $48 for a slab, or four 6-packs on special for $30.

      • +9

That's the squire. Zero alcohol means no alcohol taxes. It should be sub $30 RRP.

For the xxxx dry it's only $8 cheaper than the case price (less of a discount than the 20% cashback y'day)

        • +1

Good point on the alcohol tax. I’d like to see an analysis or investigation into this.

I know that the process to make 0 ABV beer is more complex than alcoholic beer so it won’t cost less, however there should be a sizeable discount for the lack of tax.

          • +1

@GeneralSkunk: A 24x375ml carton 5% will have around $20 tax plus gst on it.
This is just a marketing stunt to sell a slow selling product. It made all the news outlets, used the pain of a deadly pandemic as a marketing opportunity, they are obtaining your email via sign up, then selling you a product that you can buy for $44 for $38.60.
Beer gets cheaper the more volume you produce, the process for producing zero alcohol wouldnt cost them that much more as lion makes lots of beers and has the technology. The zero alcohol beer is and interesting one as a segment of the market especially young people aren’t as in to alcohol anymore. It also allows big breweries to sponsor and have brand recognition at events that may be worried about having alcohol as a sponsor. They will always have the main brand on the label but with a zero so kids can see Heineken zero @ F1 races, or a Carlton Zero at the servo. Hard to complain or ban it as it has no alcohol.
It would also have a healthy profit margin as there is not alcohol excise.
The “first 20000 units” is on there to create urgency, so you impulse buy a product you didn’t want.
Getting people into the shop is also beneficial as they will then often buy extra like a bottle of spirits and an over priced soft drink.

            • @Stewardo: Do you think they would also utilise / sell the ethanol collected. Surely an extra income stream to offset any processing costs.

  • +3

    Not worth it

  • +1

I ordered the Furphy's so beers sorted for the weeekend

    • which Furphy are you getting BOGOF ? I tried cans and bottles perhaps it depends on state

      • Crisp lager stubbys, just picked them up now

  • No go in the NT.

  • Refunds now being issued with no explanation?

  • It’s not giving me the deal. I’m getting the second 6 pack for half price but not free at the checkout. Anyone else getting that issue?

    • Issue fixed. I thought I’d registered but apparently I hadn’t. Apparently if you’re not a registered customer you get the second 6 pack half price instead of free…

  • 2 x 6 packs for $15, not bad, thanks Op

  • +1

James Squire Zero should cost less than a similar mid strength swill.

  • Coopers no alcohol is about $5 at Coles.

  • how long does it take to get the email with the $10 promo code for signing up for the newsletter?

    • It has a minimum spend of $50 attached to that $10 promo.

      • +1
