  • 16 beers to a carton…. Hmmm

So let’s say the average case is about 60 bucks (mountain goat for example) for 24 at 2.5 a beer

You want 55 bucks (delivered) for 16 at 3.45 a beer

Anyone had these? Are they any good?

    • +42

Not sure this is worth a neg, comparing a small batch brewers price to the price of a beer made by Ashai, one of the biggest brewers in the world, seems unfair.

I can buy VB at $2 a can, would I, no, would I compare a small craft brew price to VB, never.

Not associated and doubt I will buy, but negging simply because you can find a bulk beer cheaper than this basically would cause most 'bargains' on ozbargain to be removed.

    • +12

Neg the deal, don't neg the fact you dont like craft beer.

The phasmid ale is usually $65 for 16 + shipping. It's now $40 for 16 + $10 flat rate shipping.

Clearly this is a deal for fans of Lord Howe beer.

      • -2

Well I took my neg away as it was a little too subjective and it’s now been reduced to 40 as well, so not sure it’s fair to keep it up.
So assuming these aren’t short expiry dates as well, it might be a deal for someone that’s into these.
Don’t see how these would be better than a “case” (16) of Tinnes that are regularly 40 bucks but I guess that’s the subjective part.

        • +35

          Good question.

Tinnies is a pseudo-craft beer brand dreamt up by Coles. They put this on the shelf of Liquorland and first choice to make it seem like they stock a craft beer option and to supplant a genuine independent label. It's brewed to a price and allows Coles to profit both at the point of production and distribution.

          https://craftypint.com/who-owns-your-beer

Many/most of the "craft" brands you see now at these retailers are brewed in this way. The few independent brewers still working with the supermarket giants have such terrible distribution contracts that they barely break even.

This is how Colesworth is f-ing the brewing industry just like it's f-ing the food industry.

If you want to buy a craft beer in a major retailer look for the IBA (independent brewers association) logo. That way your money is going at least in part to an independent business and not straight into the pockets of Colesworth.

          • @chickentaste: Well done dude, great answer and public awareness. For what it’s worth I actually think the taste of those Coles and Woolies brews are awful, for example I had a Lorrybrothers once and it might just be the worse beer I’ve an ever tried. So I’d hope that would guide people towards better options, but as you have mentioned, convenience and price normally win out with most people.
Well you’ve won mdd we over I’ve swap out my regular my pale ale purchase local brew (Ballastic) around the corner from me. It’s 75 bucks a case vs 60 bucks but I think that’s probably worth it.

            • @Fuzzyduck: Good onya. Ballistic had to be rescued from administration a few years ago so I'm sure they will appreciate your support.

I've had their pale ale before and it's not bad however I would note one thing, this beer isn't brewed on Lord Howe Island (they don't hide it and it's clearly listed on their website - https://www.lhibrewingco.com.au).

I have also been to Lord Howe and visited the on island "Lord Howe Island Brewery", this beer they don't export off the island https://www.lhislandbrewery.com.au.

  • +12

Love a beer deal but where are those winter stouts and porters?

    • Agreed. It has been cold in Melbourne recently. Need a good stout to warm me up!

  • +2

@lordhowebrewing shipping to Vic is coming up as $13 not $10.

    • +2

Just a note for others, 1 case to Vic still showing as $13 shipping but 2 cases drops to $10 shipping instead of the posts $16.

So 2 cases for $90 delivered or $2.80/can. Worth it for me to give a smaller brewer a go.

  • +15

To avoid disappointment perhaps put in the title that the (little) cases are 16 units.

  • +7

Lord Howe - that's what chicks say when I disrobe.

    • That's our line!

  • +3

Nice, I got the mixed case. Shipping to ACT was $13 though.

    • I don’t see a mixed case option?

  • +2

Can you add 16-cans to the deal description? Calling these a case is deceptive

      How brewers/distillers rip off Australians:

      1. Turn a 24-case into a 16-case
      2. Turn a 375ml can/stubby into a 330ml can/stubby
      3. Turn a 700ml bottle into a 500ml bottle

      How to respond? DON'T BUY!

      • There's no 'rip off' here. You cannot compare the cost of making this beer with xxxx or VB.

If you're really want to know more read this: https://blackhops.com.au/craft-beer-prices-how-much-does-bee…

Nice things are sometimes expensive to make

        • +3

A case or slab is traditionally 24x375

Yes, we know the Europeans and Seppos do 330ml, but it's still 24

The other comments didn't equate this to VB or XXXX, you did

Nice things are more expensive, popular things are more expensive and expensive brands let you know it's expensive.

          • -3

@Big L: If your argument is with the use of the word 'case', I think that horse has bolted my friend. I've been buying cases of 16 for 10+ years. You can buy three of these and tell yourself you bought 2 cases if it makes you feel better though.

            • +1

@chickentaste: You've posted 25 deals for beer, 1 has been for a pack of 16.

But you tell me what's what champ, me old chief pal mate.

          • +5

@Big L: Dunno where you got your info, but in beer drinking Europe it's usually a crate of 20 x 0.5L bottles or a tray of 24 x 0.5L cans and costs less than half of what a carton does here for more volume and better quality. Smaller bottles exist but are not the norm.

            • @Absurd: Okay, that's what they ship here or have rebottled under licence.

            • @Absurd: Just to make it very clear to others (who I'm often reminded really are that bad at math) - 20x500ml is way more than 24x375ml. It's very reasonable to call that a case. They don't call them longnecks or whatever, that's one of their standard beer sizes.

    • +2

Most craft beer cases are 16 cans. This is the new normal. Often craft beer is higher abv and it definitely costs more to produce.

Pretty easy to find out how many cans are in the case.

    • +2

Cases of 16 is very common for craft breweries

  • got a mixed case. Shipping to QLD was $13 also.

    • Dont see any mixed case?

  • +6

Hi all, clearly a slight glitch with shipping by $3 on some orders. Anyone who has overpaid will be refunded the amount. Standby.

    • +1

Don’t worry, the people complaining were never going to buy anyway.

      YOUR'rE RIPPING OFF OzTrayLIuns!!!!!!!!!

    • Thanks for the update. I only negged to bring to your attention. This has subsequently been removed.

  • +4

People clearly don’t drink many craft beers. $6-8 per can is about normal. My beer costs more per can than the wine I drink…

    • That doesn't make sense unless the ABV is high, as spirits in a can aren't that much.

      • I buy $7-8 cans of craft beer and $7-8 bottles of wine. it totally makes sense. Aldi wine is $7 (el toro Tempranillo, its a great quaffing wine), you can easily find $99 for a dozen wine deals and even $79/dozen is pretty common.

    • u drinking goon bags or penfold grange?

  • +6

We've amended the glitch and refunded all orders that were $3 overpaid for delivery.

    Thank you for the support.

  • Noice! Ordered my fave, the Phasmid.

  • Can confirm this beer is delicious 👍👍👍

What’s the best before date? Thanks

  • Just ordered a case of the Pale Ale, seems good value.

    • +4

GDay Graz, so you've checked our website where we are clear about the contents and our best before date is literally in the post. Can we send you one can to taste, to reverse your neg? Would that help?

  • +1

Hmmm a lager with an expiry Feb-26. I doubt they've them canned them now. I'd like to try it but 1st thougts "Craft beer, especially lagers, is generally best consumed fresh, ideally within 3-6 months"

  • -1

does it come with stick insects in the box

    • +1

      You know your beer :)

      • and I have been to Melbourne Zoo way more times than I would care to admit

        • Nice!! They are huge little critters.

  • Can you confirm if there is a mixed case option? Others in the comments seem to have purchased one but I can’t see it.

    • Apologies Pearl, Mixed cases are now out of stock.
