TIL My Toshiba TV Is Actually a Hisense

Hisense bought Toshiba TV brand in 2017. I bought my Toshiba TV around 2019. It is definitely a Hisense.

For my next TV, I might as well buy a "Hisense" Hisense since I have been their customer anyway. Welcome to globalisation!

Wait till you find out Sony uses LG panels and Apple uses Samsung components.

    • -1

That I know. Companies source components for best value for money. But the whole brand? That's shocking.

      • But the whole brand? That's shocking.

You are actually shocked by this? It's extremely prevalent.

      • +1

Sharp TVs are made and retailed by Hisense as well.

      • Don't trust any AKG headphones with Samsung on them, they are not true AKGs. They are cheap rubbish.

  • LOL it isn't globalisation. Globalisation is having a Sony TV you think is made is Japan but made in Malaysia.

It is just Toshiba has enough problems and sold their TV brand for some money to concentrate on their mess.

Even Nokia sold their mobile phone brand to HMD global.

Yes, it makes it more difficult to buy with discretion.

    • I just felt like an idiot. I always say I'll not patronise CCP brands (Hisense and TCL. And possibly Huawei. Jury is still out on them.). Blah blah blah. I am already their customer!

      • +1

Hisense is actually state owned (government owned) where as Huawei is privately owned but under the thumb of the CCP (because all Chinese businesses exist for the good of the state).

This coming from a person who recently bought 2x Hisense air conditioners. Reason is 5 year warranties. 2.5kw reverse cycle for $450 and 3.5kw for $600 after cash back was just too hard to give up.

Not sure if TCL is privately owned.

        • TCL started out as a state owned enterprise but is now publicly traded. Having said that, they still have close ties with the Chinese military.

          • @systema:

they still have close ties with the Chinese military

People in the military need to watch TVs too. Would be better they watched censored content on state influence TV than not I suppose, if that makes the CCP members sleep better at night.

            • +1

@netjock: If the TVs they make are not Smart TVs, then I would agree with your assessment there. Since any TVs are full fledged networked computers, I think some people might find this to be uncomfortable to introduce devices made by such manufacturer to their home networks.

Hisense is ok for aircond. I'd probably spend a bit more Panasonic/Fujitsu due to the labour costs to install/repair.

I've purchased a 2.5kw Pana for under $600 after cashback but you don't see the those deals anymore these days.. due to stock shortage and also high demand (working from home).

It's interesting regarding warranties with Airconds. The cheapest nastiest brands (Teco/Midea/Kogan/Aldi), mid brands (Samsung/Hisense/Rinnai/Kelvinator) and the premium brands (Panasonic/Fujitsu/Mitsubishi/MHI/Daikin) all have exactly the same warranty period- 5 years.

I'm not saying they are all the same or they are the same quality, it's just interesting that they all carry 5 years warranty, no less, no more. I suppose A/C technology (or lack thereof) is mature enough to last 5 years without any problems.

      • Damn, I feel the same about CCP, I mean our soon to be overlords. Can't believe they own everything. CCP have always had dodgy androids on the phone/tablet front, I wonder how their google tv implementations are.

But what can you do? Nobody else near the price range.

The joys of a state backed industry and dirt cheap labour costs…

    • To be fair, Nokia licensed its brand for mobile phones to HMD Global.

HMD Global is a Finnish company, primarily made up of former Nokia employees, whose headquarters are located in the same city as Nokia's HQ.

Although, their phones are made in China, just like everyone elses.

Wait until the find out the Mercedes Benz X class was a rebadged Nissan Navara (mostly).

Wait until you find out that jv is a female.

The world, including ozbargain, is full of surprises. Enjoy the ride.

I paid a premium for a Mercedes but I've got a Nissan! LOL.

    • Mercedes Benz X class was a rebadged Nissan Navara

Smart cars have engines that say "engineered by Mercedes" but Merc drivers are worried about the badge on the bonnet.

    • Whilst I still think it was overpriced and shouldn't have launched with the Nissan engines if they wanted it to be taken seriously, it was quite a lot more than a rebadged Navara. With a wider body and track, overhauled suspension, additional bracing and a very different interior, it might not have been a great value vehicle or much better than Navara on which it shared the platform, but it is definitely more than a rebadged Nissan.

        Hence the (mostly)

They also had the V6 option rather than the crappy 4 banger.

        • Which was the big mistake as it should have launched with that, then introduced the nissan engines later, especially given the V6 Amarok was the main competitor in the more luxurious dual cab class.

    • JV cannot be female, even with the whole blurring of gender definition

      • Do you have proof?

Something you seen that can’t been unseened?

  • Whoa never knew they bought Toshiba, they seem to be doing quite well.

    • Japan is old and weak now I guess. I remember back in the 80s, everything was made in Japan.

      • -6

No it's because they made a massive bet on Nuclear technology but then the Tsunami hit and they tried to hide their losses with fake accounting over the decade.

      • +1

Made in Japan is still good, just expensive. It is like Corolla vs Hyundai vs made in Vietnam / Thailand models.

      • +1

Japan got too big for its boots, similar to Australia right now and was hell bent on growth at all costs.

This led to a huge recession, of which 10-20 years later they're just starting to come out of. China's heading the same way the Japan did back then.

  • Toshiba has been making rubbish and rebranding others to their brand for decades. They're one of the few brands where I won't even consider buying one of their products. They peaked in the mid, maybe late 80s IMO and have relied on reputation built prior ever since but even that's almost completely worn away now.

    • Used to make good notebook computers. But didn't keep up.

      • I had one of those Satellite notebooks. Very good product. That was 10+ years ago though.

        • i still have mine, don't know if it works or not anymore but it has an input for a tv antenna, haven't seen that on a laptop before or since. it worked well too.

    • In 2011 I bought a new Toshiba DX-1210 all-in-one. RRP was around $2K and for one day only, Harvey Norman had it on sale for $999.
It was very high spec at the time, had an i7 processor, 1TB HDD, DVD burner, inbuilt TV tuner, amazing sound, touch screen and was beautifully built.
It was still performing flawlessly when I sold it last year. The only reason I sold it was it couldn't be upgraded to Windows 10 and support and updates for Windows 7 had ceased.
So, I replaced it with a new HP Pavilion all-in-one which is the worst PC I have ever owned. Slower than a 20 year old Celeron based PC and can't be upgraded to Windows 11. An absolute turkey.

  • My first ever DVD player was a no name Chinese brand that no one had ever heard of, but it was incredibly cheap compared to every other offering. When it broke a few years later, I opened it up - It was Panasonic drive and Sony motherboard.

the name of the brand really isn't relevant these days, it's the support, price and reputation that matter more.

    • +1

I opened it up - It was Panasonic drive and Sony motherboard

You can put Brembo brakes on a Lada. Doesn't improve anything that is not the brakes.

I do some what agree that China made source components from other manufacturers. It is like iphones. Problem is quality control. Apple demands high quality. As you go down in price the QA might be lower. It is like how come TCL sells TCL brand TVs and FFalcon TVs with 3 year and 1 year warranties.

      • +1

True enough. Everything is made in China anyway. Same component made in the same factory. The branded ones hopefully have better quality control.

      • +1

Lada's never had any trouble stopping, they had 3 pot callipers from factory. It was getting up to speed in the first place where they struggled.

    • It was Panasonic drive and Sony motherboard.

It was probably the parts which those companies rejected.

  • Another thing to consider is that even though the item is the same some "high end" brands go through stricter QA control. For example(hypothetically) they might test every device before shipping rather than just one out of a batch of 100.

    • I think that is spot on.
Every fifth Landcruiser gets a thorough review by a factory QA process before it leaves the factory. Every single Lexus gets that QA.
A wholesaler pays more for an intensively QA’d item in any factory - and it all depends on where you draw that line. A lot of cheap stuff here in OZ has had minimal QA, even if it comes from the same factory.
A large factory will also put its best parts and staff on the line that is going to get tight QA, so everything else goes to the one that won’t get scrutinised and rejected.
Quality, time, price - you can get any 2 you like, but never all three….

  • If you feel comfortable with inferior quality, then by all means.

  • Is it made in Turkey? Might be made by Vestel.
