  • is this really that much better compare to $200-ish XiaoMi? Considering at 3 times the price..

    • +1

      Yes

    • Not really and for that price I probably will be looking at winix zero+.

    • +1

No. All standalone room purifiers are physically limited in what they can achieve.

If you have a health need for clean air (viruses/COVID, allergies, bushfires, woodfires, etc.), you're better off investing in a whole-house unit if you can. Depending on your house, you can get a really good one installed for a few thousand dollars that works significantly better and is a lot cheaper to maintain.

I swear by mine. I'm asthmatic and my neighbours use woodfire heaters so the air is unnecessarily polluted. And during the bushfires last year, when I couldn't even see across the street, the air in my home was pristine. Tested with a particle counter, which I also recommend and are quite affordable.

Yes, Moon Jae-in is 3x better than Xi Jinping.

Hope that clears the air for you.

    This is overpriced trash.
What's really that special about a plastic box, a filter and a WiFi micro controller hooked up to a laser ppm sensor and NFC reader?

Please provide a link to your Instructibles video where you show us how to build one that looks this good in under 30mins*

Bonus points if you can provide a warranty. Thanks.

(*)the time it will take me to buy, collect and get back home to start using a retail unit

  • Do you need air purifier in Australia?
This is more for.. up there with so many factories.
I used my Xiaomi one well when NSW bushfire smoke came down VIC

    • +2

For most people, NO. All Australian cities have the best air quality in the world on most days, except for those bushfire haze days.

These are however very useful, for people with certain allergies or have other pollution sources like carpet dust or pet hair in their homes all the time.

      • +2

Thousand of people die each year in Australia from air pollution.

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW 2016, Begg 2007) has estimated that about 3000 deaths (equivalent to about 28,000 years of life lost) are attributable to urban air pollution in Australia each year

It's a country that didn't jail VW executives for purposefully going about killing people using this method.

As someone who suffers from dust mite allergies and had an admittedly cheaper HEPA air purifier, these things didn't really make a difference. I agree in Australia, these things are glorified vanity items. Unless you're basically living on top of a coal mine, in which case I'd suggest moving.

The replacement filter cost $149 per 6-12 months.

    • Which isn't bad, really, even if you replace it every six months after using every night for 8 hours while you sleep:

      $149 / 183 days = ~$0.81/night = ~10 cents per hour + electricity

For an asthmatic or someone with high sensitivity to allergens, that's a bargain.

  • Wtf…?? How is this a bargain.

You can get the same HEPA filtration purifiers from Xiaomi for like 1/3 the price.

do you get less dust in the house with these machines ? im sick of cleaning

    • +1

I personally have the Xiaomi one (purchased for about $150) and it does collect a lot of dust in my room.

It doesn't stop me from dusting completely, but it does make the room feel fresher and cleaner as opposed to when it was off.

I also used to live in a unit that was facing a very smelly river, and this helped masked the smell.

I wouldn't pay $700 for this particular model, but if you would like to give it a try, you can't go wrong with the Xiaomi one. I've had it for a good 2 years now and it's going strong. It also senses smells like perfumes etc and will ramp up the fan to eliminate the smell.

I bought one for my mum as well due to her allergies at night - and I was shocked how much dust it picks up in their room! A lot more than it does in my own.

      • for the xiaomi one, do you need to replace the filter? or it can just be cleaned/washed?

        • I vacuum it for maintenance, but replaced it a couple times for the sake of it - found a deal for them on ozbargain like $30 each.

  • I thought this was an interesting comparison between brands/models. I can’t vouch for its accuracy, just saw it on the Canberra Pollen Twitter account this morning and thought it seemed timely.

    • Thanks link is worth a visit just for the graph alone, shows price vs CADR to approximate value for money on a number of current devices

  • For people in Perth, JBHifi Osborne Park has this unit on clearance at the moment and it's going for $599

  • I have asthma and allergies, but they don't really bother me and are well managed.

I also have money to burn.

Should I buy this shit or what?
