Do Tertiary Full Time Students Have to Re-Apply for Opal Concession Card Every 6 Months?

Hi,

A question for all full time Tertiary students in Sydney.

If you are a full time student, are you having to re-apply for Concession Opal card every 6 months?

And when does this eligibility stop? (whilst still a FT student)

Thanks

  • I think it depends on your educational provider.

I never had to reapply for travel concession, the uni just automatically did it for me. When I was no longer a student my travel concession stopped working shortly after census date in the follow semester.

  • +1

You shouldn’t be applying every six months, unless you’re changing your study load every six months.

Your eligibility finishes you’ve reached the expected course completion date. Unless you failed and/or deferred (and no you’re not eligible for concession while you defer your studies).

  • thanks for replies so far!

My son definitely meets this criteria from GG57 link

NSW tertiary students are eligible to apply for concession fares in NSW if they are enrolled full-time in either:

an accredited course of study with a registered higher education provider, or
a Vocational Education and Training (VET) accredited course.
Tertiary students must also be an Australian citizen or permanent resident of Australia.

    A full-time student means:

a university student who is considered to be enrolled on a full-time basis by their university, or
a student enrolled in an accredited course of study requiring at least 16 hours per week of classes for a continuous period of at least six weeks.
