Removing Stickers from New Laptop Case

Hi all, not a very tech question but surely the right forum for it.

Has anyone tried taking the stickers off the casing (besides the trackpad) on a new Lenovo laptop, dark grey, aluminium finish

I've just received an IdeaPad Slim 5 Pro 6 with four stickers arranged in a backwards L-shape, with the vertical part running right beside the trackpad. The first is a tall sticker with the model and random features listed on it; below that is an eSupport QR code (the only potentially useful sticker, if only it was located to the edge or rear of the case); then along the front edge going outwards there are two AMD stickers, which aren't as unsightly, and aren't as annoyingly placed, but are slightly askew to each other!). Grrr!

How soon should I wait before peeling them off?

Should I expect any residue / marks to be left behind - I had a couple of tiny specks of snot glue between a couple of the keys and can still see a feint mark after wiping with a damp cloth.

Thanks in advance.

  • you can use isocol to remove any snot glue residue after taking those stickers off. I've done it multiple times and laptop looks cleaner without those stickers there

    • thanks for the reply. Isocol is isopropyl-based?
So do you reckon alcohol wipes would work just as well? - I have those.

      • you can buy Diggers isopropyl alcohol from bunnings and Officeworks, but if lacking alcohol a hair dryer or heat gun will weaken the adhesives enough for you to peel them off by hand.

Goo Gone is reportedly also a good product for removing stickers and their residue https://www.amazon.com.au/Goo-Gone-Original-Liquid-Adhesive/…

        • As scrim mentioned Goo Gone is probably the best product I've seen for removing adhesive residue from surfaces. It seems to be the right level of enough to remove almost anything you can throw at it without discolouring plastic surfaces.

      • alcohol wipes will work just as well.
and yes, isocol is isopropyl based.

  • The old 'Intel inside' stickers used to be a pain to remove but most others are easy. Just remove slowly. Any APC will remove the remaining residue.

I hate spec stickers in laptops.

    • Great - thanks.

I still have the Intel i7, Windows 7 and energy star stickers on my old laptop, but they are more neatly stuck on and towards the outer edge of the case.
I had a second-hand laptop before, which had discoloured squares where the stickers had been removed. That was more unsightly than the stickers.
The new laptop stickers are so centrally placed and higgledy-piggledy though… At least Lenovo placed the Windows sticker on the underside.

  • I've had success removing stickers using Eucalyptus oil, bonus is it'll clean out your sinuses at the same time.

  • Butter is another relatively natural option

    • +2

      I Can't Believe It's Not Sticker Remover!

      • XD

@Shadowsfury But wouldn't I then need to clean the fatty butter residue off? I think I'll stick to the alcohol wipes.
There's a small gap around the track pad, I don't want to gunk it all up.

        • Yeah perhaps not best of ideas for a laptop but for products like plates for example it would be fine.

        • But wouldn't I then need to clean the fatty butter residue off?

          Lick it off.

  • Thanks, all. I'll give the ispropyl wipes a go, as I have those.

    • Thanks for thanking contributors. Not seen very often around this neck of the woods.

      • Oops, am I showing my lack of forum savvy?! XD

  • Isopropyl alcohol is the solution to most of life's problems.

  • wd40 also works for removing residue, found that out when i used it to clean my knife after opening some boxes.

  • I used eucalyptus oil to get some silver texta off a cheap plastic laptop cover and it smudged the silver but didn't take it all off. That's the first time eucalyptus didn't work. I think it melts soft plastic also.

  • De-solv-it and a plastic razor blade would be a safe choice. I have used it for removing stickers from plastic, glass, whitegoods and cars.

  • Eucalyptus oil clears away residue like that.

  • Thanks, everyone, I appreciate the replies.
Didn't know about eucalyptus oil - think there's an ancient bottle of that in the bathroom cabinet.

Just waiting to test everything in the laptop before I peel the stickers off.
