Anz Travel Rewards Credit - Now Being Held By Virgin Direct

I had a flight booked with my old ANZ Rewards travel credit. The flight was cancelled by Virgin.

It was being held by ANZ for future use. But they emailed saying they will no longer handle the credit, and now its been held with Virgin direct.

Any ideas on the best way to get in contact with Virgin (phone line says only call if you have a flight booked in the next 48hrs).

Wondering if I can simply get this credit paid out as a cash refund since Virgin cancelled it (and its basically just getting the now useless ANZ travel rewards annual fee back).

Cheers

…get this credit paid out as a cash refund since Virgin cancelled it

I really doubt it. It's so rare (or unheard of) that any company would pay out 'credit' as 'cash'.

  • It's just a normal flight credit. ie. if the airline cancels, then you can get it refunded. The issue was it was booked by ANZ travel, so they got the refund. But now they have ended their partnership with Virgin, and given it to Virgin to handle, so it might be fare game.

  • I'm in same boat as you with cancelled ANZ card, cancelled flight etc and now credit sitting with Virgin.

I think ANZ offered a refund to the credit card a while back but it was kinda pathetic vs the value of the flight credit so I rolled the dice on the credit instead.

I don't believe the credit can be converted into cash - even if there was still a partnership with ANZ Travel you still wouldn't have been able to.

  • I had the same situation and called Virgin direct. They changed it to a flight credit to be used within 1 year of the date of conversion to a credit. But the date of flight can be booked any time after the 1 year if needed. AFAIK they told me they cant do refund.

  • In the same situation, the credit is sitting directly with Virgin for me.
Actually surprised its still valid, since they gave us 1 year to use the credit which for me expired in may

You should have received an email from ANZ with a Ticket number. If not, call ANZ Travel and get that number.
Then call Virgin Australia on 13 67 89 and provide the Ticket number. They will create a Travel Bank for you to the value of the credit, which in turn can be applied against any future flights.

Doubtful you can cash out that credit but try asking Virgin anyway when you call.

p.s. If you have any unused lounge vouchers that recently expired, you could try calling ANZ for credits to the value of the vouchers. I did it with mine, citing the border closures and impossibility to use them.

    • Lounge voucher credits…nice work. I've closed my card now though, but changed it for a Black. I'll give it a shot

    • Any idea how much was the amount back to travel bank? Was it $400?

It depends on the original flight value that was cancelled. Mine was a Syd-Ade return flight that was valued around $240. If it was Syd-Per, it would be easily far higher.

        • That would make sense. Mine was a Pert - Syd, will try call up tomorrow to find how. Thanks for the tip on Travel bank.

          • @starburstyellow: I was in the same boat per-syd trip that was cancelled. I got $470.18 travel credit. It was easy just call them and they will setup the travel bank credit. Once it's setup you can just book it online without calling them

            • @melay0326: Who did you call (what number)?

Since ANZ wouldn't refund the annual fee (which was madness), I just booked Perth to Kunnarra (which yielded a $650 credit). Hopefully I can now use that credit to book a different domestic flight for 2 people.

    • They sent me extra lounge passes when I complained about not being able to use them but think another lot has expired. Don't know if they would be willing to credit if I'm no longer a customer hmm…

      • I originally asked for replacement passes (as mine had expired) but anz told me they can't do that and hence credited me instead.
