If you're not sure, then there is a 90 day risk free trial if you buy from direct from Bose.
I'm pretty sure you don't get this with other sellers.

    • +1

You do. It's just a piece of paper that comes with it. I got it with my purchase from the Qantas store Bose sale a couple of weeks ago.

      • I got it from bose via amazon and did not get anything

        • I'd probably still just contact Bose directly if you want to return them within 90 days. Worst case they say no.

  • +1

After gen 1's failure, really not sure it's worth it.

The design of the buds them selves is pretty okay for a side sleeper, but the noise portion actually gave me worse sleep.

    • Weren’t the first ones like a kickstarter public trial or something?

      • Oh no, they wanted full retail price in stores.

        • Weren’t the first ones like a kickstarter public trial or something?

Yes, they first sold them as prototypes via Indiegogo.

That was successful so they started selling them in shops. But there was a problem with the battery being unreliable, so they discontinued them and offered refunds to people who wanted it.

I guess they've solved the battery problem hence the new model.

    • +1

My partner uses the Gen 2 ones, she finds it quite comfortable and shes a side sleeper - apparently it solved most of the annoyances from gen 1. THe only annoying part is the noises are VERY limited and you cannot put any other sounds or songs apart from what is on their app.

  • +1

I had these, returned them. They are big in size and uncomfortable. Cannot wear and sleep on sides. Also they cause pain after prolonged use.

  • +2

Its had to imagine how these thangs can give you a better sleep, besides plugging your ears for hours can't be healthy.

    • -1

      My thoughts exactly. :)

    • +2

Its had to imagine how these thangs can give you a better sleep

I think it's one of those things where if you've never experienced the problem, it's difficult for you to imagine a solution working. Bose is an experienced company, they wouldn't make a second generation if they thought nobody was going to buy them.

besides plugging your ears for hours can't be healthy.

Wearing earplugs when sleeping is nothing new though. Plenty of people do it, many have probably done it every single night their whole life.

    • +1

I’ve been wearing silicone ear plugs every night for the past 5 months. No side-effects so far. I think it’s more likely that plugging your ears with ear buds all day is unhealthy, because the inside of your ears really needs to dry out during the day. Plus subjecting your eardrum to loud noise from a speaker that’s a few mm away may not be good for hearing.

    • IMO the biggest downside to these is that they don't have active noise cancellation — that's the minimum I'd expect from a $300+ product. I'm guessing ANC isn't viable because of the tiny battery.

Instead, the Sleepbuds are basically just ear plugs that happen to play a narrow selection of sounds to mask background noises. I'm going to stick to using ear plugs + my Lectrofan white noise generator for the time being.

Do you really need ANC if you're listening to masking noise?

I'm going to stick to using ear plugs + my Lectrofan white noise generator for the time being.

If that solution works for you, doesn't that mean ANC is unnecessary since earplugs don't have them?

        • Do you really need ANC if you're listening to masking noise?

Yes — I do, at least. ANC is superior to masking sounds. It also doesn't require you to pump up the masking noise volume to dangerously high levels.

If that solution works for you, doesn't that mean ANC is unnecessary since earplugs don't have them?

It doesn't work for me 100% of the time, sometimes the neighbours upstairs make loud thumping sounds on their floor which wake me up even when I have ear plugs on and the Lectrofan running. (Before anyone asks: yes, I've spoken to the neighbours about this many times)

ANC works better and can cover up these extreme sounds, but the trouble is that I can't sleep with ANC headphones on (I have the Bose QC35 II), as I'm a side sleeper.

          • @deadpoet: OK, looks like your sleeping environment is noisier than normal then. I guess the Sleepbuds aren't aimed at that sort of sleeping environment. From the comments it looks like there is quite a specific market for them, and the people in that market are very pleased with the performance even without ANC.

  • +1

Surprised these were enough of a success to spawn a Gen 2

    • +5

If you have tinnitus and need white noise without disturbing other people. By far the best solution. The market is there.

      • I use a fan, not too disturbing

        • +2

Cool, glad a fan is all you need bro, thanks for your feedback

          • -1

@King Steuart: I was referring to "By far the best solution", you should try a fan.

        • +6

          Fans don't keep out snoring.

        • +4

Can't bring a fan when you travel.

  • +11

Just a reminder that you if you have the originals sitting in a drawer somewhere you can make a warranty claim saying there's something wrong with the battery and they'll send you these ones as a replacement. I had some that I bought in 2018 that I got replaced this year.

  • +3

I have this, I have to say, if your environment is noisy, and you are sensitive , could not sleep well. Then this one is very useful.
The best bose product I purchased!

  • +1

Have had these since the start of the year. Love them. Comfy and block out the right amount of external noise. They block some sound passively, then you adjust the noise volume to whatever you like.

Cons are you expect the battery in the case to have more than like… 2.5 recharges for the buds before needing to be plugged in, but its a minor thing.

    Would buy again.

  • +2

Shame that Bose only limit it to in app sounds. I would buy these in a blink if I could listen to a book or a podcast.

  • +1

Blocks general noise well and I would recommend if you have traffic noise you deal with. They do have a weird issue that some people have reported of phantom noises in the tracks which once you notice it's hard not to focus on. I also find that in the middle of the night the sleepbud sounds are actually muted due to my ears deciding it's regular background noise. I'm sure not everyone experiences these things though. They also won't block thud type noises well.

    • +1

"They do have a weird issue that some people have reported of phantom noises in the tracks which once you notice it's hard not to focus on."

YES OK I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE. JEEBUZ. Thought I was going crazy!

  • Dankpods have a pretty good review on these, its worth watching if you have zero idea of what they are or what they're suppose to do

    https://youtu.be/OfYo2qQtwMs?t=148

  • Can I play audible through these?

    • +4

Unfortunately no, they're not earphones. A bluetooth chipset and driver that can reproduce full-fidelity audio probably wouldn't fit in such a small earbud while also giving reasonable battery life. At least not yet…

      • Thanks for the response.

  • Wouldn't standard earphones with white noise do the same thing if you could find a comfy pair to sleep on your side with?

    • +4

if you could find a comfy pair to sleep on your side with?

      And there's the problem. :)

    • +1

Slept with wired earphones doing the same thing for years, not very comfy at all on your side. They would often dig into your ear and you'd end up tangled/half strangling yourself overnight!

  • +1

Super expensive for something that is just used to produce sleep sounds limited to the Bose app, it's a shame they done playback audio from other apps.

    • +5

Super expensive for something that is just used to produce sleep sounds limited to the Bose app

This is one of those things where value is very very subjective. Reading through some user comments online, it looks like it works really well for some people but not for others. For the former, $3xx is a tiny price to pay for a good night's sleep. It's not for fun or recreation, it's something that can literally change their mood and improve their life.

  • +1

Thanks freeflight. I live on a busy road and have slept to white noise and rain for years. Bought a pair of Amazfit zenbuds back when they launched on kickstarter but the app was woeful and the battery life degraded pretty badly over time. They were a great concept and I swore by them initially. Hopefully the brand backing and warranty support of Bose means I won't run into the same problem!

  • Cheaper at Dick Smith - $25 off in cart which brings it down to $294 + shipping. Direct import / international version though if that matters to you.

  • I got some of these through Bose for the 90day return in case I didn't like them! Only use them when neighbors are noisy with music and love them. Use to put in my AirPods Pros but they would fall out and I'm a side sleeper so they were uncomfortable. These are so much more comfortable! I think they are very expensive for what they are but I'm happy to pay $400 for a good night's sleep when needed!! If you can sleep ok with other earphones in then I wouldn't bother

  • Hi all, I assume that most of you having sleeping issue therefore you are purchasing this product. Is that right? Eg, traffic around your home at night….ringing in the ear etc. Thanks

    • +1

For me, yes. It does the job for the main external noises but deep bass (neighbours) will not work.

I've experimented along with the Bose QC35, Bose QC30, Sony XM3, Custom made molded ear-plugs and I find the Sleepbuds the comfiest for sleep.

But yes I wish you could use your own audio (brown noise works well for bass).

Also don't know if related or not but I think I've developed tinnitus? I can hear weird noises when I use the Sleepbuds thinking its outside but when I remove it it's quiet :S

      Source: Shift-worker

      • +1

A lot of people have tinnitus. This noise is more obvious during the night or when the surrounding is quiet. This is to do with a lot of things such as stress; nerve. It's not a sick but just need to live with it and especially relax yourself. You may notice that you notice less when you are in a holiday.

  • I live in a quiet area but have a neighbour with a large dog that has a loud bark which starts up at random times through the night. It’s the type of noise that jolts me awake. Would these help block that out or are they just for traffic type noises?

    • Another cheap option is something like "white noise machine", you can search on amazon. The machine generates different sounds for you which may help masking outside noise. But loud bark could be a different story. You should approach your neighbor and explain your concern. Sometimes you can even try to ask other neighbors if they have the same issue then speak to the owner together.

    • I think you'd be better off investing in ear plugs, or a white noise generator (e.g. Lectrofan), or both. Much cheaper than getting the Bose Sleepbuds, which do basically the same thing but for a much higher price.

    • If you've tried ear plugs and/or a fan and they don't work, then the sleepbuds won't work either

  • +2

The main issue with these (asides the price and limited functionality) is the short, clumsy audio loops on ALL of the available sounds!

On every track, you can distinctly hear the point where the audio loops (every track is only about 10 seconds long, looped continuously)

This means you are constantly anticipating the next loop point, meaning you can't relax and sleep because you find yourself consciously counting down to the next loop point.

This is really lazy on Bose's part, with just a little more care they could have EASILY made the loops seamless.

  • Just took mine out after waking up. Great for blocking out noise - on plane, nextdoor noisy house party, kids, etc

Gen 1 had some issues but Gen 2 has been solid. Bose have always provided great support even out of warranty.
