[Solved] Remote Access Issue in Plex with TP-Link Deco X20 Router with Internode nbn HFC

I have a HFC nbn connection from Internode. My nbn modem is connected to the default Internode modem (Archer VR1600V). This connects to the parent TP-Link Deco X20 which then connects to the other two X20 units (one via ethernet, one via WiFi). My NAS (Synology DS918+) is connected to the mesh network with an ethernet cable to a child unit via a switch. The NAS has the Plex server installed.

In Plex Settings —> Remote Access page I am getting below message:
Not available outside your network
Your server is signed in to Plex, but is not reachable from outside your network.
Private 192.168.68.69 : 32400
Public IP showing different IP address & port (let's say 1234) than the private one.

In Internode modem:
- I have enabled Bridge mode by going Advanced —> Network —> DSL: Deleted all existing items, adding a new connection as follows.
- DSL Modulation Type (VDSL), VLAN ID (Enable, '2'), Internet Connection Type (Bridge). Save.
- I have also disabled both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz WiFi networks so only my mesh WiFi networks are discoverable by devices.

In Deco X20:
- I have enabled UPNP.
- I have disabled AntiVirus —> Intrusion Prevention System.
- In Advanced —> Address Reservation: I have added the NAS device (192.168.68.69).
- In Advanced —> Port Forwarding: Added NAS private IP (192.168.68.69), Internal Port (32400) and External Port (1234).

In Plex:
- Settings —> Remote Access: I have ticked 'Manually specify public port' to on, and typed 1234 and hit Apply.

For 5 seconds or so, it shows in green font 'Fully accessible outside your network'.
After 5 seconds or after navigating away from this side menu bar and back again, it shows in red font againt 'Not available outside your network'.

I have tried to follow a mixture of guides and solutions from Plex, TP-Link and other forums.
Any advice would be greatly appreicated, thanks.

  • Have you tried just leaving the port as 32400 accross the board? I only be inclined to change it if you have 2 plex servers?

    • I have yep. Same result.
I should add that I have used www.yougetsignal.com to check if the port I have configured to forward is open, but it always comes back as closed?

Has it work before in this setup?

I read somewhere on this forum that the RSP's CGNAT can break Plex access, and not related to your home setup.

Twix - if you read this, you have advice for OP?

    • Yep CG-NAT can break Plex remote access. I don't think Internode uses CG-NAT on the nbn. I'll help out shortly.

  • There are two solutions here. nbn HFC uses DOCSIS 3.1 and not VDSL2. Don't use bridging for HFC on the TP-Link Archer.

Is there any reason why you have the TP-Link Archer plugged into the nbn NTD? Do you use the home phone to make calls?

Is the TP-Link Deco configured to be a router or Wi-Fi access point under advanced settings?

    • There is no reason I am using the TP-Link Archer router, other than that during the setup guide of the Deco units it doesn't get rid of it. I don't have or use a home phone to make calls.
Are you suggesting that the Archer is doing literally nothing at this point, and I could simply remove it from the system and instead plug the Deco parent unit directly into the nbn modem?

The TP-Link Deco units are configured as a router (default).

Side-note: I have just been informed on the Plex forums that the red/green indicator and statement of whether Remote Access is working is not reliable.
I can access the Plex server successfully when not on my local home WiFi network, so I'm thinking everything is working and I've been misled by the Plex settings.

You have running the nbn NTD DOCSIS modem + two routers. With the nbn NTD + TP-Link Archer + TP-Link Deco = double NAT = broken Plex remote access.

        1. Get rid of the TP-Link Archer since it's not doing anything.
        2. Use a pin to hit the reset button underneath the TP-Link Deco.
        3. Plug in the TP-Link Deco to the nbn NTD and get it configured to PPPoE with your Internode account username, password and VLAN ID = 2.
        4. Turn on UPnP for the TP-Link Deco.
        5. After that redo your Plex settings.

          Thanks very much Twix.
I have taken your advice and removed the Archer from the system. All is working well.
Note, I have not needed to set up manual port forwarding for Remote Access to work on Plex either.

          • @MitchAustralia13: All good Mitch. Yep UPnP will take care of that.

            • @Twix: Sorry to crash the thread but I have the same issues, and I am guessing the solution should be similar? I have poor IT skills though.

I have a wireless modem from AussieBB, and from this, I have three of those Deco M5 units and one of those Ethernet Powerline Kits to which my PC is connected.
The same 'Your server is signed in to Plex, but is not reachable from outside your network.' is the message I am getting. Unfortunately, my PC is too far from the wireless modem/router to plug-in directly, but I assumed that the powerline kit would be doing the same job?

              Any ideas?

I also have the following message:

Tip: It looks like your server may be connected to the internet through multiple routers or other network devices. Try connecting it directly to your primary device, or visit our support site for more information about troubleshooting this "Double-NAT" scenario.

@gasman70: This is a CG-NAT problem or a misconfigured setup causing a double NAT problem. Do you have FTTN, FTTB, FTTC, FTTP, HFC, Fixed Wireless? If unsure check here

Powerline kits will do the same job but can be slower. Can you plug in your PC to the Deco instead?

Do you use the home phone or mobile only to make calls?

                • +1

                  @Twix: Twix,

                  I have FTTN.

The PC is now plugged into the Deco now and it works!!

Don't use a home phone at all. Only use mobile.

                  • How the hell did the Powerlink stop that working?

Thanks mate, for your help. You nailed it again.

                  • @gasman70: The VDSL2 modem from Aussie BB is syncing to the node and the Deco has taken over the router duties. Any ethernet wired PC, TVs and so on now need to be plugged into the Deco. Is the 'Your server is signed in to Plex, but is not reachable from outside your network.' message still there?

                    • @Twix: The message has disappeared and it’s all working well

                    • @Twix: I spoke too soon….if I disconnect/reconnect it shows 'Fully accessible outside your network
You can access this server from signed-in Plex apps or in a browser at https://plex.tv/web'.

                      But 3 seconds later…….

@gasman70: Give Aussie BB a call and say you use a server and want Carrier Grade NAT off.

                        • @Twix: Did it this morning and they said it would take anywhere between 5 and 30 minutes, I rebooted the router after, but still not working.

I have the Plex Pass so that a good friend can access my stuff; he said it worked last night, but it's been inaccessible ever since,

                          • @gasman70: Reboot everything including the Aussie BB modem, Deco and PC. Did that help?

Is the Aussie BB modem configured as bridge mode?

Is the TP-Link Deco configured to be a router or Wi-Fi access point under advanced settings?

Is UPnP turned on in the Deco settings menu?

                            • @Twix: I will have to check all of that later, but in the meantime, it looks like it's working.
All I did was click on the 'manually specify public port' (32400) and click APPLY in the remote access area.

                              Sound ok?

@gasman70: If it's working leave it. If it stops again reboot everything, check those settings and get back to me.

@Twix: Thanks Twix. I owe you a few beers mate.

  • Have you tried plugging the NAS into the VR1600V?

    • That will work if you configure the TP-Link Deco as the Wi-Fi access point however the TP-Link VR1600v isn't needed. TP-Link Deco X20 is a more powerful router that should be plugged into the nbn NTD.

Thanks. Yes I thought it would be difficult to diagnose with so many connections.
