Even though it's called 'spiced ham', it's very different from the cold cut leg ham types from delis or Don. Different taste and texture. Obviously different ingredients too.
I think Spam suffered from association with US servicemen in WW2 and maybe Vietnam. When I was a kid there was still a strong rejection of American culture taking over Australian things, and that was enough reason to reject spam as the low quality import.
So if your family didn’t live in Australia then, it probably doesn’t carry any of those negative connotations, and may even be viewed positively if your background is from one of the countries mentioned up thread.
The other marker is the Australian (perhaps British) canned hams. Plumrose ham in an oval shaped large tin was low grade ham that might end up on a tuck shop sandwich. I remember going to a family Xmas of a romantic interest as a teenager, and the granny who was tasked with bringing the ham brought a tin of Plumrose ham. The hosts had been expecting a leg of ham, and were unimpressed.
I know you can still buy Plumrose ham, I wonder if it is of better quality.
