My favourite type of unsolicited emails.

  • +10

I get free spam from coles every week, why spend money?

  • Picked up a few today

    • So did I. I was surprised it wasn't posted as a deal already.

The consensus is OzB likes Spam

That's a weird poll. What's the relevance of the person's descent? A better poll would just have 2 options.

        • +2

I think it's relevant because it's hugely popular in some countries, like Hawaii, it's even on the Maccas menu there, and in every servo and corner store as Spam Musubi…

Spam, or 'Spiced Ham' served as war rations for the allies in ww2. As such it has a strong influence depending on your background, and your families reliance or use of it.

          • @Skinnerr:

war rations for the allies in ww2. As such it has a strong influence depending on your background, and your families reliance or use of it.

            LOL!!!!

World War II ended more than 75 years ago !!!!!!!

            Strong influence my foot!

People eat or don't eat Spam because they like it or not. Nothing else.
Like Coca Cola, like cigarettes, like virtually everything else!! Good and bad.

Health wise I would like to know if Bunning's snags on white bread and caramelized onions is any better or worse than Spam?

        • +2

I found most my Aussie Anglo friends didn't like it as they were introduced to it as a 'cheap' form of ham steak and had bad memories of it from being a kid.
Not until later in life that some tried it sliced thinly sliced and fried with rice or in fried rice that they actually liked it.

And as above WW2 had a part in the distribution of Spam around some parts of Asia and the Pacific Islands. So ethnicity plays a part.

        • I kinda agree with you. I mean, the descent part is interesting but that particular poll doesn't prove that 'the consensus is OzB likes Spam'. It just says that a high proportion of people of South East Asian descent who like Spam responded to that poll. So yeah, a poll with the 2 options would be more relevant to the assertion. I forgot the product even exists and is still available in Aussie supermarkets. And look at the price - didn't it used to be for poor people?

    • +2

I almost missed the deal because it went straight to my junk inbox

    • +1

As above link, you're in the minority.
Most of OzB (who voted) likes Spam.

      • Cheap, and loaded with salt.
What’s not to love right? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think they made a decent toastie

        • +2

They definitely do, fry them up till crispy then chuck them into your cheese toastie.

        • +1

          Cheap? Spam - $9.71/Kg, whole chicken - 3.50/kg.

          • @[Deactivated]: How is that a sensible comparison? You eat the entire chicken, bones etc. and all, I guess?

            • @mickeyjuiceman: Yes, buttholes and scrapes off the floor in spam is not a sensible comparison to chicken.

      • +2

well that's subjective, what do you eat so we can rip into it?
People don't eat spam every day.

    • Two reasons, we are becoming a fat unhealthy country and a lot of people love groundup lips and ar*%holes

      • +1

        So Bunning snags?
        Spam is shoulder pork.

        • and now oven-roasted Turkey apparently…….shouldn't it be called Spurkey?

        • With a whole lot of additives hahahah trust me it’s unhealthy

        • Look out, a moderator has sand in his vadge

I'm a fan of Spam Lite, less fat, extra sodium & nitrates, tastes better fried IMO…

    • +1

I thought it had the same amount of salt?

If there was a lower fat lower salt version I'd be all over it.

      • +1

Odd, if the info on the coles site is correct the Lite is lower salt than the classic now…

I researched it a few years back and came to the conclusion the Lite was probably unhealthier due to the higher salt and nitrates, looks like I might be wrong now, lol, it's either changed or I flicked up…

        • +2

Pulled out a Lite can from the pantry from recent purchase: 741mg/100g sodium. Seems to be less than Classic. Winning!

"Heavy on the flavor, light on the other stuff. This variety offers the scrumptiousness of SPAM® Classic with 33% less calories, 50% less fat, and 25% less sodium, which means you can enjoy the taste you love more often. It’s the perfect SPAM® variety for swimsuit season."

        • +2

Thanks, checked it out after you mentioned and sodium has indeed gone down, still not amazing but actually less than some deli hams. Might be worth a go. I doubt I’ll convince my husband but I have fond spam memories from growing up.

  • -4

    Reported for SPAM!

  • Honestly can't taste the difference between the SPAM Bacon and the regular SPAM. Anyone else? At least they don't charge more for the Bacon variant.

    • SPAM Pumpkin is apparently really good

      • Only 1 result on eBay for SPAM Pumpkin Spice; and it's $200. Would be interesting to try if it weren't a limited edition release.

    • +2

There is not much taste difference, but there is a textural difference.

There are bits of rough ground 'bacon' bits in it.

Personally feel it's the superior product.

  • This is a go to for camping when you have no refrigeration. I tried frying some up at home once and it ended up IN THE BIN.
Still tastes good out camping though.

    • This is a go to for camping when you have no refrigeration. I tried frying some up at home once and it ended up IN THE BIN.

What's the difference between frying it whilst camping and whilst at home?

      • I guess my taste buds are in a different state. 😂
But it tastes dam good camping but it would have to be one of the last things in the pantry to eat at home.

      • -1

Lard camping, extra virgin olive oil at home.

      • Home has a fridge and duck liver pâté

  • not bad, but i only eat bad if its 1/2 off.

  • I thought I was clever reporting this as spam then noticed 9 people already did it.

    • I feel for the moderators :(

    • EVERY TIME it gets posted, bright sparks thing they're super clever thinking of such an obscure reference

  • This thread is spam

  • -1

Don’t eat this $hit, seriously don’t. It’s full of chemicals and it will make you sick after a while and that’s guaranteed.

    • +3

It's not the type of thing you'd eat every day, it's an occasional food for when you need the shelf life while camping/touring or when you've run out of bacon while trying to recover from a hangover…

At the end of the day it's no worse than any other heavily processed meat…

  • ew..

  • If they make spam less salty, I'll be eating everyday

    • What happened to the 50% less sodium one? Its only 25% now.

  • +1

Anyone got Craig Kellys home address?
    Might send him some 😁

    • Are you a delivery boy? i got some spam for Dan

      • No

        • Do you love spam? Why Craig Kelly? there are plenty others who would eat $hit.

  • Is it widely accepted that 'fresh' refrigerated ham is better than shelf stable ham (Spam)?

I personally don't like it*, but I'm wondering if it's similar to canned chicken vs refrigerated chicken and fresh vs UHT milk. Both those above options to me are viable alternatives I keep on hand and regularly consume, but I still prefer the real deal.

Please have mercy on me Spam enthusiasts I'm genuinely curious lol.

*Admittedly haven't tried Bacon or Turkey varieties

    • +1

I see them as two separate products even though they are both 'ham'.

I wouldn't put spam on a pizza… And I wouldn't normally eat fresh ham with rice and eggs.

    • widely accepted that 'fresh' refrigerated ham is better than shelf stable ham

Refrigeration is an issue, spam is good for when your pantry is running low and you want to hang out for an extra week or two before re-stocking, and/or for a doomsday stash, and/or for extended periods off-grid camping/touring……

      canned chicken

The Aussie canned chicken options are VERY limited and not a viable choice really…

Please have mercy on me Spam enthusiasts

You're more than welcome to have a city-opinion (IMO), but I think you would probably think differently if you ever roamed into remote areas.. ;) (tongue in cheek ;) )

      • Yeah that's exactly what I'm meaning like I can see it's use and viability even if taste isn't there for me.

The Aussie canned chicken options are VERY limited and not a viable choice really…

Funny how I don't like spam but see this as a viable alternative.

OP has sorted of answered my question. I get how refrigeration is an issue - and use by dates too imho - but without considering refrigeration do you buy spam as a replacement for ham or as an alternative/backup
Does spam taste better than ham to you?

  • The true ozbargainers have come out of the woodwork for this one that’s for sure.

  • Wow! I used to have that a lot, but not after I switched to Apple!
